Until next time,

Your Relieving Principal, Laurinda Lomas

Green Sea Turtle ProjectThank you to Ms Pitt and our wonderful year 5 and 6 Green Sea Turtle Project team who presented their slide show and digital art at Taronga Zoo last Thursday to a large audience of students, teachers and special guests. As part of this project, the EHPS team discussed and designed a strategy to inform everyone about the devastating effects of marine debris on sea creatures, particularly the Green Sea Turtle.

Congratulations to Connor S for the great poster of a turtle, Lachlan F and Luke S for being wonderful presenters and putting the slide show together, to Chloe B, Bella G and Holli R for their entertaining and informative film work and Millie R for the spectacular digital artwork. Please see Ms Pitt’s photos and article about the day in the pages following.

Data collection on school students with disabilityThis year our school is taking part in the collection of nationally consistent data on school students with disabilities, to assist the Government in their forward planning for such students. This data is sourced from information already available in the school; there will be no testing and no impact on students at EHPS. All information provided is confidential. Please read the detailed information later in the newsletter for more information. An opt-out slip is available on page 5.

P&C MembershipAny parent wishing to join the School P&C is invited to do so by completing the EHPS P&C Association Membership Form, a copy of which is available at the School Office.

Too sick for school? As the cold weather hits, so do the winter bugs. It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult cancelling work. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. School A to Z and the NSW Health have created an at-a-glance chart to help answer your questions about common childhood illness and how long sick kids need to miss school. Find it by typing this link into your web browser www.bit.ly/1hytn2E

LIFE EDUCATIONHealthy Harold will be visiting our school from Friday 13 June to Tuesday 24 June. The program addresses many of the components and objectives within the NSW PDHPE curriculum.

According to the age of the students, the program may include topics such as:healthy lifestyle, healthy eating, personal safety, importance of exercise, friendships, peer pressure and coping strategies, function of body systems, effects of passive smoking and smoking, safety with medicines, cyber safety, safe and unsafe situations, consequences of alcohol use and misuse.

Life Education NSW is a not for profit community-based organisation and relies heavily on the riasing of funds within the community. The sale of Healthy Harold merchandise to the children supports the fundraising activities.

An order form is on the last page of this newsletter.

Attention K-2 Choir SingersThe K-2 choir will be starting up again in early Term 3. Auditions will be held in Term Two on Friday in week 7 and 8 (June 13 & 20) at second half of lunch. Students will need to come to KC’s room and have a short song prepared e.g. Baa baa black sheep or the first verse of the school song. Students who are successful at the audition will be required to come to weekly lunch time practices. Please discuss this commitment with your child prior to the audition as the criteria to be in the choir is regular attendance. Students will have the opportunity to perform at various assemblies throughout the year. The choir aims to develop and nurture a love of music, singing and performing as well as creating a sense of belonging.

... PCS GREEN SEA TURTLE PROJECT PRESENTATION DAY CYNTHIA PITT

Taronga Zoo Theatre June 5thOn Thursday the Green Sea Turtle Project Team travelled to Taronga Zoo and presented to a large and interested audience which included the Mayor of Pittwater, Mrs Jackie Townsend and Director of Schools, Mr Dean White. Everyone was very impressed to see all the great things the schools in the PCS have done to get the word out about marine debris and what it is doing to sea creatures and in particular the Green Sea Turtle.

Our Team did a great job putting the presentation together. A big thankyou to the following students for providing something for the presentation: Connor S for the great poster of a turtle, Lachlan F and Luke S for being wonderful presenters and all the time they spent putting the slide show together and choosing the most perfect song. For the entertaining and informative film work by Chloe B, Bella G and Holli R and the spectacular digital artwork by Millie R.

I was very proud of Elanora Heights PS on the day, they were wonderful ambassadors for our school. The team continue to work together to get our message out there. We have many more plans to continue our work. WATCH THIS SPACE!

The Green Sea Turtle team is Connor S, Tea C, Luke S, Imogen C, Montana W, Chloe B, Mark V, Bella G, Rosie C, Holli R, Connor P, Lachlan F, Max S, Millie R, Sam K, Luke P and Fin H.

COLLECTION OF DATA | LAURINDA LOMAS

Nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability – 2014Our school is participating in the collection of nationally consistent data on school students with disability.

We will be collecting information already available in the school about the support that is being provided to students with disability. Better data will help the Government plan for students with disability.

The data collection will have no direct impact on your child and they will not be involved in any testing process.

The NSW Department of Education and Communities will provide data to the Australian Government from all NSW public schools in such a way that no individual student or school will be able to be identified. In this way, we will ensure the privacy and confidentiality of all students.

All information is protected by privacy laws which regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. Information about the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy can be found here: http://education.gov.au/condensed-privacy-policy. Information about the NSW Government’s privacy policies can be found here: http://www.ipc.nsw.gov.au/

If you do not want your child to be counted in the data collection you must complete the attached form and return it to the school before the end of Term 2, 2014. A decision to exclude your child will not affect the support they currently receive. Further information about the data collection can be found on the Australian Government Department of Education website:

http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

If you have any questions about your child being included in the data collection please contact the school.

If you need help with English to make an enquiry contact the Telephone Interpreter Service on 131 450 and ask for an interpreter in your language. The operator will call the number you provide and get an interpreter on the line to assist you with your conversation. You will not be charged for this service.

If you do not want your child to be counted in the data collection, please complete the attached form and return it to the school before the end of Term 2, 2014.
