Until next time,

Your Relieving Principal, Laurinda Lomas

Book Parade The wet and cold conditions could not dampen the enthusiasm of our students at our Bookweek parade last Wednesday. Mrs Morrison did a fabulous job introducing the book characters as class buddies walked around the hall to the music. A big thank you to all the parents who supported our parade and helped our students create the proudly-paraded characters.

What a wonderful way to celebrate our love of reading!

Teddy Bear’s PicnicMore than 70 new Kindergarten children along with their families, the current 2016 Kindergarten children

and Year 5 students filled the hall and Kindergarten classrooms for a fun-filled morning of hands-on activities at our Teddy Bear’s Picnic last week.

Thank you to the EHPS staff, in particular Mrs Rosconi, and our current Kindergarten and Year 5 teachers, who helped make this an enjoyable first experience at EHPS. Thanks also to our incredible parent helpers Ro Brazel, Anna Buono, Melanie Ballard, Maria Allart, Carly Skeers, Barb La Ganza and the canteen staff for their assistance in the preparation and serving of our delicious lunch.

We are very fortunate to have such supportive and caring parents within our school community. A special mention to our General Assistant, Mr Brooks whose BBQ cooking skills were second to none!

We look forward to welcoming the new Kindergarten children and their families into our school again at our Orientation days in Term 4.

Athletics Carnival on ThursdayThis week is our K-2 Athletics carnival on Thursday September 1. Volunteers for this day are always welcome. Please contact the school if you are keen to be involved. Thank you very much to Mrs Rebecca New who has been organising our wonderful events for the day.

P & C meeting 7.00pm this WednesdayThis week our P&C meeting starts at 7pm. Our new principal, Leesa Martin will join us for her first introduction to the wider EHPS community. We also have a visit from Eve Clark, the Health Promotion Officer responsible for Livelifewell@school on the northern beaches. Ms Clark is coming to talk about children’s health, guidelines and good healthy eating ideas in other schools. We would love to see you on the night.

Symptoms are sudden onset fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, muscle aches and headaches.

Do I need to keep my child home?Yes, until they look and feel better.

How can I prevent spread?Careful hand washing, especially after coughing, sneezing or wiping your nose. Immunisation, is recommended for children with chronic illnesses.

COASTAL ENVIRONMENT CENTRE VISIT2ST and 2C are learning about how land is shaped by water. To help us understand the fascinating landscape we live in, Tim from the Coastal Environment Centre brought in a 3D relief model of the Narrabeen Lagoon Catchment.

When we poured water on it, we saw how it flowed into the creeks and down to the lagoon and then the sea.

It has been an exciting few weeks at Heights Delights! Our new menu items have been so popular that our team have had to whip up extra batches of Anzac biscuits, blend up frozen fruit pops, toast up tens of tuna hotties and order in more fresh fruit (now free with our chicken tenderloins).

NSW Health’s Fruit and Veg month starts Monday, so remember to get your loyalty cards from the canteen and start collecting those stickers to receive a free frozen fruit pop!

To kick things off, the canteen will have a special menu item – fresh, frozen pineapple pops. They will be sold for $1 and are pictured below.

Thank you to our canteen volunteers who put together rainbow fruit platters for last Thurs-day’s Teddy Bears Picnic. The children loved eating the colourful displays of fruit.

Also a reminder that our “Red Light” day will be held on Thursday Sepember 15th. Order forms will be sent home soon, or you can order through munch monitor.

Green gets gobbledCrunch, much, like very hungry caterpillars! Thank you for sending green fruits and vegetables on Friday. It was great to see the children enjoying such a range of fresh food and looking around to see what everyone else had. We build on this interest for class activities in writing and maths. Year 2 classes counted who has what, and recorded it as a table which can now be turned into a graph.

What did Year 2 eat for Green Fruito-vego?23 children ate cucumber, 16 ate green apples, 10 had kiwi-fruit, 5 ate green grapes, 4 ate broccoli, pear, snow peas and green grapes and 1, 2 or 3 enjoyed honeydew melon, capsicum, baby spinach, beans, celery, avocado or asparagus!

LLW@S talk at P & C meeting 7.00pm this WednesdayEve Clarke is the Health Promotion Officer responsible for Livelifewell@school in the northern beaches, helping school communities develop a strong, consistent focus on healthy nutritional habits and lots of daily activity. She is coming to talk at the start of this week’s P&C meeting about children’s health, guidelines and good ideas in other schools. I hope parents will take this chance to hear about the broader context for our school’s initiatives and why it matters.

K-2 Edible Art coming up in Week 9 The LLW@S parent group is organising some fun with food in Week 9 as K-2 children will have the opportunity to create edible art. We will need some helpers to cut up fruits and vegetables please.More details will be in our newsletter next week.

Y... P&C Meeting

Our incoming Principal, Mrs Leesa Martin, is attending the P&C meeting commencing at 7pm in the staffroom this Wednesday, August 31st. She is looking forward to meeting the school community.

The meeting will open with a presentation from Eve Clark, Health Promotion Officer for Schools, from NSW Health. Her talk will cover the LiveLifeWell@School program and she will take questions. The usual business of the P&C and an opportunity to hear Mrs Martin will follow Eve’s presentation.

Working BeeThe working bee is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, 10th September.

• Garden Bed along Middle Oval (near Art room) – prune shrubs and weed.

• Re-planting along Bottom Oval fence, then mulch – some plants have died so we’ll obtain some more free native seedlings beforehand.

• Prune shrubs and weed along new top staircase. The P&C minutes also mentioned that there had been some garden waste dumped near here, so that can be cleaned up too.

• Clear weeds and heavily mulch area between new sandpit (bottom oval) and water tanks. Mr Brooks would like to clear this whole area and make it kid friendly.

• Make a new garden along wall just below K-2 assembly area (on LHS of stairs going down to bottom oval). This would need some logs to define garden bed and keep mulch in, some mature-ish plants to ensure survival (growing to only 1m so doesn’t obscure teachers’ view of playground), a load of garden soil mix and mulch.

• Paint the other railings up the stairs to the classrooms – I think this would just require a light sanding to roughen the old paint, then painted over. Mr Brooks even bought the paint for last W/Bee. Currently some of the railings are cream and some are white.

• Uniform Shop – Sue and Janine did not fix up the shop during the holidays as planned. So we would love some helpers to remove shelving, patch up holes, paint ceiling and walls, and put up shelving in new layout.

Please contact our Organiser Extraordinaire, Janine Ralston, at [email protected] if you can assist on the day, particularly if you have specialist skills or equipment that will make the day far more productive than if left to hacks such as me!

LanguagesFollow-up actions are placed on the P&C Agenda for discussion on Wednesday.

….… September is Fruit and Veg Month across our state?Fruit and Veg month is a NSW Health initiative for primary schools. The initiative aims to put a positive focus on fruit and vegetables by encouraging conversations about healthy lifestyles, increasing students knowledge about the benefits of eating fruit and vegetables and giving them opportunities to try a variety of fruit and vegetables.

This initiative is important because only 22% of kids aged 4 to 8 meet their recommended 4.5 serves of vegetables each day. This number drops to less than 5% of kids when you remove potatoes.

So what are we doing at Elanora? To kick things off, we have Eve Clark from NSW Health talking to our P&C on Wednesday night. We are also issuing ‘loyalty cards’ in the canteen, where students collect stickers by purchasing fruit or vegetables. They will then get a free frozen fruit pop once they have collected 10 stickers.

NSW Health also has a number of fun and free competitions that you can enter. “Max the Veg” involves submitting a picture of one of your family’s favourite meals that includes vegetables. Entries close Friday October 14th and first prize is $250!

http://healthy-kids.com.au/teachers/fruit-veg-month/veg-it-to-the-max-family-challenge-2/

“Photographic Competition – Healthy Life, Healthy You” Take a photo that depicts the competition theme of healthy life, healthy you. Entries close on November 1st with the winner taking home prizes worth more than $2,000 and also securing $3,000 for our canteen.
