PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Parents and Friends,

Another action packed fortnight has rolled by, with today marking the first day of Winter and the half way mark for Term 2 – already! Our staff are currently very busy reflecting on student progress since the beginning of the year as they prepare the mid-year reports to be sent out in Week 10.

Recorder group at the Opera HouseWhat a wonderful experience it was for our talented recorder group to perform as part of an ensemble of 700 at the Sydney Opera House on May 20. This is a first time our recorder students have had

this opportunity and I would like to thank Mrs Jenny Power for her hard work in making this experience happen for our students.

The students had an incredible time and represented our school beautifully. We are all very proud of you, well done!

Life Skills Family DayNext week our K-2 parents are warmly invited to attend their child’s Life Skills lesson on either Thursday June 7 or Friday June 8. This is an opportunity for parents to come along and see what the program is all about and perhaps join in on the fun. Letters have been sent home informing K-2 parents of their class times if they would like to attend. We hope to see you there!

Premier’s Debating ChallengeLast week our debating teams, the Year 5 Demon Debators and the Year 6 Debatinators, participated in the first round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge against Narraweena PS. All students demonstrated an excellent understanding of the debating process and we congratulate them on their persuasive arguments and excellent rebuttals. Thank you to Miss Heazlewood and Miss Hurley for their training and coordination of the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

Winter UniformBy now all students should have transitioned to the winter uniform, it is pleasing to see so many students looking smart and wearing their uniforms with such pride. A question regarding boys wearing their school shorts during winter was raised at our Week 3 P & C meeting. Whilst the school’s preference is for boys to wear their long trousers in winter, it is acceptable for them to wear their school shorts if they wish. There is an expectation, however, that all students wear their long sleeved shirts during winter, in keeping with the school’s winter uniform policy. I thank you for ensuring that your children are appropriately dressed for school during the winter months.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Anna’s WalkLast Sunday more than 300 members of our community walked from Narrabeen lagoon to Mona Vale beach in memory of Anna Lynch in the inaugural Anna’s Walk to Beat

Bladder Cancer. It was very moving to see such incredible support for the Lynch family, with funds raised going towards improving awareness and support for people living with bladder cancer. Each family attending the walk received a small tree to plant in Anna’s memory and we have decided to collectively plant the trees received by Elanora families to create a garden of remembrance within our school grounds to acknowledge all families in our school who have experienced loss. If you would like to include your tree in this garden, please bring it to the school office.

Zone Cross Country CarnivalCongratulations to all students who represented our school at today’s Zone Cross Country Carnival, accompanied by Miss Levido and Miss Reddan. We look forward to sharing your results with the community in our next newsletter!

Class Parent MeetingNext Thursday we will be holding our second Class Parent meeting for this year, commencing at 9:15am in the staffroom. If you have any items you would like raised at this meeting, please ensure you send them through to your class parent before Tuesday. I would like to thank Janine Ralston for her excellent coordination of the Class Parent program this year, the regular communication has certainly been well received.

Make My Own LunchTo bring the fortnight to a fabulous end, this week our students in Years 3-6 engaged their culinary skills in preparing their own healthy lunch wrap, salad jar or snack. This invaluable experience is part of an ongoing program to promote lifelong healthy eating habits – an essential part of our student wellbeing program. I would like to thank Mrs Cullen, Mrs Ralston,

Mrs Seaton, Mrs Skeers, Mrs La Ganza and their outstanding team of parent helpers who make this event such a success year after year. Students now have the opportunity to continue the Make My Own Lunch challenge over the next couple of weeks and I am looking forward to seeing their creative lunchboxes at school each day!

Until next time, Leesa Martin Principal

. Our plan to improve the junior and senior playgrounds is now under way. The P&C has funds to expend towards the second round, the natural playground. Les from ED Landscapes has already started the initial playground design and once this is firmed up we will have a separate sub-committee meeting to work out where we might be able to source materials to assist with putting it all together. If you are interested in being part of this team or able to supply materials such as boulders and large logs, please email [email protected].

We are holding our term two working bee on Saturday June16 from 1pm – 4pm. We are so lucky our school has such a beautiful bush setting but this does mean a lot of maintenance is involved, so please come out and lend a hand, and enjoy the afternoon with other members of our school community.

Our jobs list includes:

• Construction of garden beds in collaboration with Peter Rutherford of Kimbriki Eco-Garden and Class 5R – Miss Charlotte Reddan needs some assistance to get this project underway, so all classes can enjoy the benefits of growing and eating vegetables, herbs and flowers. What a great project!

• cleaning up and changing the costume room with the music storeroom – co-ordinated by Mr Jack Tier

• water pressure cleaning

• ongoing bushland maintenance

• grounds rubbish and uniform cleanup – thanks children!

The Social Sub-Committee started their detailed planning of Term 3’s Trivia Night with a meeting at the racquet bar this week. Trivia Night is on August 11 – pop into your calendar now – and could well be in the school hall. Watch out for further information, and start organising your table. Maybe use the opportunity to catch up with the ‘regulars’ or parents from your class, or possibly even with a group of parents you haven’t seen for a few years.

... PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE Year 5 Demon Debaters First Debate Last Tuesday May 22, the Year 5 Demon Debaters competed against the Narraweena Public School Chatterboxes in Round 1 of the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

The topic was that “All Tests should be Banned”.

The Elanora Team presented negative and the Narraweena Team was affirmative. The Elanora team’s first speaker was Max M, the second speaker was Amelie E, the third speaker was Ella F and the fourth and silent speaker was London M. The time keeper was Wil W, the Chairperson was Rhydian W and

the adjudicator was Mrs Jane Lodge.

Sadly the Elanora Demon Debaters lost, but only by a small margin, which was impressive considering we were competing against Year 6 students.

Year 6 Debaternators First Debate

On Tuesday May 22, we had our first round debate for the Premier’s Debating Challenge for 2018. We competed against the Narraweena Rebuttal Shuttle and it was a very tough debate.

Our topic was that ‘The Best Behaved students each day get a 30 Minute Early Mark from School”.

The Elanora Debaternators were the negative team and the Narraweena Rebuttal Suttle was the affirmative team. Our first speaker was Lexi M, our second speaker was Lachlan S, our third speaker was Cooper B and our fourth silent speaker was Jiya V. We had Jacinda B as our chairperson and Kate H as timekeeper. It was a very tough debate, but we narrowly won. We had a fantastic time having lots of fun.

The adjudicator, Mrs Jane Lodge gave us some very helpful tips on our debating skills. We thank Miss Heazlewood and Miss Hurley for their time and effort teaching us how to be amazing debaters.

2018 Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition FinalsAll students in Years 3-6 have presented speeches to their classes this term, developing their skills in public speaking and being persuasive. Listening to these speeches has also been a valuable learning experience in recognising and responding to effective persuasive techniques. The Multicultural Perspectives speeches provide a rich range of content about important global issues.

Congratulations to the following students who will be presenting in our school finals on Monday June 4:

Stage 2 finalists: Lachlan S, Elsa G, Imaan A, Calyse B, Kitty T, Cait B, Jessica K, Tyga L, Zoe E, Sylvie M, Harper E and Daisy B.

Stage 3 finalists: Chloe D, Amelie E, Luella M, Michael G, Orlando G, Ella F, Lazar R, Kate H, Lexi M, Jiya V, Mia M and Cooper B.

Parents are most welcome to attend with the Stage 3 finals commencing at 9.15am and Stage 2 finals at 11.15am. Both will take place in the school hall.

Two students from each stage will be chosen by an external adjudicator to participate in the local finals at Mona Vale Public School on Tuesday July 3. Good luck to all of those involved. I look forward to hearing these talented speakers.

SHOW OFF YOUR LUNCH - YEARS 3 - 6Wednesday June 6 and 13

What a buzz of excitement as Year 6 walked out, gazing with excitement at their jars filled with … SALAD. Likewise, Years 3, 4 and 5 walked out proudly carrying their delicious wraps filled with a dazzling range of healthy fillings.

A resounding thank you to co-ordinator Barb La Ganza and the marvellous team of volunteers who make this event possible. The food they lovingly prepared for nearly 300 gourmet lunches looked so inviting, tasted so delicious – and was so healthy! Thank you so much to Carly Skeers, Janine Ralston, Bec Moreno, Jason Hime, Kelly Gallo, Charlotte Bonner,

Kristin Bell, Tanya Pickering, Justine Shelser, Suzie Stanford and Jasmine McEvoy. Barb, again (!), organised the whole menu, purchase of and food preparation. We do hope that another parent(s) will be inspired to take on this role in a year or two!

A huge thank you also to Harris Farm for donating $100.00 worth of vegetables towards our Make Your Own Healthy Lunch.

Could you help with the final task? In three weeks, we will need parent volunteers to prepare fruit kebabs for those who complete the Home Challenge. This job can be done at home and simply delivered to school. Please email the office if you can help.

What they learnt: Before making their lunches, each class participated in an educational session with separate content for Stage 2 and Stage 3. Janine Ralston and Carly Skeers presented to Stage 2, explaining the different vital food groups in a balanced healthy diet detailed in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating produced by the federal government. For Stage 3, Jody Seaton explained why we need to be careful about what is in processed foods, particularly the amount of sugar. She showed the deliberately confusing advertising and labelling on packaged foods and how to read the ingredients label.

Now to the Home Challenge! The real lasting learning happens if students apply this nutritional knowledge to make healthy choices every day. It is great to see how many students are keen to complete the fortnight’s home challenge to make their own morning tea and lunch. Please encourage them to take on this responsibility!

Wednesday June 6 and 13

Talk food! Take the opportunity to discuss food choices with your child, read labels and help them understand what is in different products. Help them plan their week’s school food – what needs to be bought? Is their lunch well-balanced?

The next two Wednesdays are opportunities for students completing the Home Challenge to Show Off Your Lunch! Teachers will be admiring healthy lunches and giving cards to students who have made their own. If your child wants to make something extra special, do it on Wednesday and show it off!

A big thank you to all parents for your support in this worthwhile project.

MUSIC NEWSIt has been a busy couple of weeks for students involved in the music program at Elanora.

On Sunday May 20, 13 recorder students played for their first time at the Sydney Opera House. It was very exciting and a wonderful experience for all involved. Here is a report from Amelie E.

‘On Sunday the May 20 the recorder ensemble played at the Sydney Opera House. It was my first time performing on recorder and it was a fantastic experience. It was an amazing opportunity to perform at the Opera House and see one of the largest concerts halls from the stage. All of the recorders played really well and the other orchestras and strings were great to listen to and watch as well. Many people would never get this amazing opportunity and we all enjoyed it very much. I think the strings and recorders worked well together and the piano soloist was great. It was a night to remember.’

On Tuesday May 29, 19 enthusiastic Year 3 choir students had their first combined rehearsal for the 2018 PCS music festival which was held at Wheeler Heights Public school. It was a fun morning of singing in preparation for the concert in Term 3.

Years 3-6 is busily learning all 12 songs ready for their Opera House performance on Monday July 30.

A permission note was sent home this week for our first combined rehearsal at the Salvation Army, Elizabeth St Sydney on Tuesday June 26.We will be departing the school at 7:40am on a bus with Mona Vale School and returning at 2:45pm. Please ensure this is returned promptly and that you make note of the Opera House ticket sales date of June 19, these tickets often sell out on the day so please mark that date in your diary, so you don’t miss out.

Next week the clarinet ensemble and K-2 dance group will audition for the PCS Music Festival which is being held Pittwater High School on Monday August 6. Tickets for that event will be available from Week 7. Details will be out in the following weeks.

CANTEEN REMINDERS

Wednesday Pizzas are not available with any alterations. There are two choices, Hawaiian (ham + pineapple + cheese) and Margherita (cheese + tomato).

Hot Rolls also cannot be made with alterations as these are pre-made and cooked from frozen. They do not include butter.

Sushi on Monday and Friday is ordered fresh in the morning from Sushi Bar at Warringah Mall. Orders must be received before 9am and once again these orders cannot contain alterations.

Chicken Tender packs are only available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Sending your child to canteen with a paper bag order instead of ordering online will not change this. They will be required to order a different item.

Friday orders: If at all possible please place your orders on Thursday night or earlier. Munch Monitor struggles with the vast quantity of orders placed in the last hour before morning cut off.

Placing your order early will ensure it is received and will help alleviate pressure on the system. Also, please remember that if your child attends PSSA they are unable to receive a lunch order and must bring their lunch from home. They are able to place an order for recess if they wish.

To volunteer at the canteen contact Ingrid on 9913 272 or [email protected] or 0416 258 626.
