PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

It was lovely to see so many parents, friends and community members at our annual Thank You morning tea on Tuesday morning. We are blessed to have the support of so many helpers at Elanora Heights, with assistance provided in a multitude of ways.

Some examples are:

* Literacy and Numeracy support * Assisting at sports carnivals* Covering books * Making costumes* Canteen volunteering * Helping with Make Your Own Lunch* Music/band program support * Extra help on excursions* Teaching ethics/scripture * Working on the P&C* Being a class parent * Helping out at working bees

…..the list goes on and on.

With the busy lifestyles of parents we appreciate whatever assistance can be given – perhaps there is something in the list above which you could assist with in 2018? Another way you can support our school is by paying your voluntary contributions – this money allows us to provide additional programs for our students which are not possible with the funding we receive from the government. We thank those parents who have paid these contributions in 2017 – you have assisted our school to provide a “tiramisu” education, rather than just vanilla!

Our Spectacular Debut!Congratulations to our amazing choir students, led by Mrs Jenny Power, who performed at the incredible Schools Spectacular performance, Own The Moment, at Qudos Arena last week. This was the first time EHPS has been selected to perform. We couldn’t be more proud of our students and their part in this amazing showcase of talent in public education. These moments stay with our students forever and I would like to thank Mrs Power and Mr Tier (who volunteered as stage crew) for making this event possible for our students. Year 6 CampThank you to our Year 6 teachers, Mrs Vicki Bosler, Miss Janayah Heazlewood and Mr Scott Reid, along with Ms Cynthia Pitt who accompanied our Year 6 students to their camp at Broken Bay this week. The students and staff had a wonderful time and all returned very tired but happy! Once again, great memories were created for our students.

Until next time,

Leesa Martin

... Annual Christmas Gift Appeal....Stewart House, Bear Cottage & Mona Vale HospitalIn previous years we have supported the Christmas Gift Appeal organised by Wiseberry Real Estate, Mona Vale. This appeal has always been extremely well supported by the Elanora Heights School Community.

At our recent Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting it was unanimously decided to get behind this initiative again in 2017. This is the SRC’s major drive for 2017.

Supporting this drive targets our designated charity Stewart House, Bear Cottage, Mona Vale Paediatrics and Dalwood Spilstead will also be the recipients of gifts. It is an activity which is in keeping with the spirit of Christmas - giving and thinking of others less fortunate than ourselves. I’m sure our efforts will again bring a great deal of joy to the students of Stewart House and also the sick children of Bear Cottageand Mona Vale Hospital.

The Christmas Gift Appeal began on Monday November 27 (Week 8) and will continue until Friday December 8 (Week 9).

These gifts will be collected on Friday December 8 which is the date of the Christmas Mufti Day (see information below).

The gifts are to be brought to school in a gift bag, unwrapped and with a tag indicating the age and gender suitability. The target age is from 8-13 years.

Each gift is inspected for safety before being distributed hence the need for the gift to be unwrapped for inspection.

We have been advised again this year to avoid gifts requiring batteries.

The SRC member’s job throughout this period is to encourage their peers to bring in gifts and oversee the collection of gifts in their classrooms.

Crazy Christmas Hair and Mufti DayThe colours of Christmas in your hair and what you wear!

On Friday December 8 (Week 9) we will hold a ‘Crazy Christmas Hair and Mufti Day’ as the culmination to our Christmas Gift Appeal.

There will be no gold coin donation as is the usual practice with Mufti Days - the gift is the donation.

We hope you will embrace the SRC in their efforts to support a worthwhile initiative.

3-6 LIFE SKILLS - FOCUS FOR THE WEEKYrs 3 and 4 - Final Week - Mindful GratitudeThis week was the last week of our ‘Mindfulness in Action’ program. Students and teachers were excited to celebrate the ending of an amazing program. Students and teachers learnt so much about mindfulness, self-awareness, each other, the breath, brain and body. Students discovered new skills they are really good at and capable of. Our final mindfulness technique involved using the senses. Students sat in a mindful minute and noticed three things they could hear, three things they could feel and with a gentle eye gaze, three things they could see. When we use our senses we are able to be in present moment awareness. This is a technique that parents and teachers can use with their children as it teaches children to be responsible for bringing themselves back to the present moment.

Students were invited to recreate some of their favourite shapes for the class to follow. Not only was recreating these movements fun, but the exercise allowed students to take on a leadership role in the class and become accountable for their own learning.

Together, students revisited movements and activities they had learnt during the program and discussed which tools could be used in their own lives. Mindfulness is not only a coping strategy, but it can be an absolute lifestyle if we choose to make it one.

Yrs 5 and 6 - Final Week - Leadership and GratitudeThis was the final week of our Tools for Transition program. Students were excited to have a celebration to acknowledge all the hard work and wonderful tools they have learnt. In the final week, students delved into what is leadership and how they can be mindful leaders every day. Students discussed: Who are the leaders in our lives and what is it about them that makes them good leaders?

Students were invited to take on leadership roles in the class and practise the skills they believe make a good leader. To conclude the program students explored the importance of having an attitude of gratitude and why it is so beneficial for us to practise this every day. Students learnt that practising gratitude daily actually increases our levels of happiness. They were encouraged to share with the class something they were grateful for whether it be a person, a thing or an experience.

... MUSIC ENSEMBLES EXCURSION TO SCHOOLS SPECTACULARLast Friday, the Elanora bands and ensembles were invited to see the matinee of School Spectacular at Qudos Arena. As soon as we arrived there was a marching band and we could feel the excitement. After morning tea we were seated in the arena with so many other schools. There were 2,600 students sitting in the choir including Mrs Power and our 13 singers who auditioned to be a part of this 20,700 voice choir. The orchestra was incredible just below us as the show of incredible singers and dancers performed. Everyone was pretty amazed, but mostly we were all inspired. Most of us hoping to one day perform in a show like this. Thanks for coming with us Ms Reddan and all the parent helpers.

School Spectacular Choir Report

13 students from 3-6 choir sucessfully auditioned to be come part of the 2017 Schools Spectacular. All 13 of us attended two choir rehearsals a week during term 4. We had 2 full day rehearsals in the city where we practised from 9-3pm and took public transport there, followed by another full day rehearsal at the State Sports centre Homebush with all the other primary choirs. Finally on Thursday last week we put all our songs together with

a live orchestra and big band, high school singers and very talented featured artists. You can see us here with Christian. We had so much fun singing our 25 songs and adding all the fun props we had like our Troll wigs, light up rose and fans. It was a truly amazing experience to be a part of a 2,700 voice choir, dancers and musicians. We

learned so much and had such a great time. We can’t wait until next year!

Training Band Performances

It has been a very successful end of 2017 for training band with a K-6 assembly performance, playing five new songs at Pittwater RSL and finally performing with the Northern Beaches Symphonic Wind Ensemble on Thursday night at Pittwater High School. They performed three of their favorite songs ‘Hang on Sloopy’ ,’Bobble Heads’ and the all time favourite ‘Rock to the Max Mr. Sax’.

The audience was full of other band directors from the Northen Beaches, they were astounded at their standard.

The training band members have achieved so much in what is essentially ten months of learning. I wish them all well in their future playing and hope they will play music for life!

I would also like to thank the parents for the lovely flowers and card. I have enjoyed this group very much and you know I will miss having them in band in 2018.

... YEAR 5 FIRST AIDLast Thursday all of Year 5 participated in a first aid class. First we revised some safety tips for the beach. Did you know that the most dangerous thing at the beach is not rips or sharks? It is the sun, so remember to SLIP, SLOP, SLAP, SEEK and SLIDE!

We then moved on to three different activities, including learning how to wrap a bandage, how to do CPR and how to use an epipen. We did the CPR on adult manikins then we used the baby manikins. We used face shields to practise our mouth to mouth, everyone had their own to protect against infection. When we did the bandaging we used real bandages and wrapped them around each other’s arms to practise what to do if someone cut themselves and was bleeding. We also learned not to become stressed or panic in these situations. Lastly, we learned how to give an epipen in case a friend or family member was having a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

We had a lot of fun learning some interesting and life-saving skills.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT TEACHING SRE IN 2018?Who is a SRE teacher?

A SRE teacher is a person who gives his/her time voluntarily to provide Special Religious Education to children in public schools. A SRE assistant helps the SRE teacher in the classroom.

Why be a SRE teacher?

It is a worthwhile and rewarding way to give back to your community. The content of the lessons you teach, will in many ways impact the minds and hearts of the children long after they finish school.

What’s involved? • Typically 1-2 hours per week (school terms only) preparing and teaching lesson. • Easy to follow curriculum with regular training opportunities. • Current Working With Children Check (WWCC), or willingness to obtain.

..... Thank you to everyone who attended the P&C Annual General Meeting last

Wednesday. A large number of our community was present, and it was fantastic to hear a diverse range of opinions and ideas come together. The exciting news of the evening was approval for two playground upgrades early next year. Top oval will have fitness equipment installed around the perimeter, which will be available to primary students at lunch or to teachers during PDHPE sessions. Bottom oval will be the recipient of a rope structure, featuring a web wall, hoop challenge and swinging bridge. The combined cost of these installations is approximately $35,000. Thank you to the staff who have helped in these decisions, the Student Representative Council who provided valuable feedback on our ideas, and to Janine R who has put in many hours gathering ideas and quotes to get the biggest bang for our buck. Stay tuned for news on the next wave of playground upgrades, which will hopefully be boosted by the car raffle in Term 1 2018.

The canteen needs your help!

Can you or a relative spare a few hours to volunteer at Heights Delights? Term 4 is a notoriously hard time of year to get volunteers as our social engagements typically increase. Ironically, this is a time when many people order canteen lunches. Our team has been short handed these past few weeks, so we would really appreciate any time that you could contribute. Have a look at our roster below, and see if a day would work into your calendar. The canteen is a great place to meet people in our community and collect lots of warm, happy smiles from the students. A huge thank you to all of our past and present volunteers. We wouldn’t be able to deliver this service to the school without your on-going dedication – thank you.

MUSICALE 2017 What an amazing way to finish off our year, with all of the EHPS P&C Music Program’s Ensembles performing superbly at Pittwater RSL recently. It was so wonderful to see so many families there celebrating and sharing in the success of their children’s music making.

Thank you to Martha MacLaurin-Wood and her team of helpers for making the day so successful. They even managed to raise nearly $750 from the afternoon!!

Big thanks also to the parents who carted equipment to and from the concert….your help was greatly appreciated.
