School Vision: Excellence & Honour

We will provide an outstanding quality of education and care to every

student at Elanora State School.

We will do this by:

Maintaining and enhancing the reputation of the school as a high performing school–

benchmarked against other high performing schools in the Region, State and Nation.

Building, embedding, reviewing and refining our programs and practices to

nurture and support student well-being.

Closing the gap in Literacy achievement between Indigenous and Non Indigenous

Students.

Maintaining excellence in Academic Areas, Music and Sport participation and

achievement.

Ensuring that every student makes at least one year’s progress for one year’s learning in

Literacy and Numeracy.

Developing the skills of our school workforce to deliver quality teaching that

responds to the needs of students and contemporary society.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Excellence and Honour is the school Motto at Elanora State School. We believe every student should experience a learning environment that is needs specific, intellectually rigorous and community orientated. It is essential that Stu-dent Leaders at Elanora State School demonstrate and reflect through their actions the School’s Motto and Values.

These include:

Strong school-community partnerships leading to improved student outcomes.

The development of a love of learning and promotion of excellence and honour.

Knowledge, understandings and skills that equip students to engage with the future, develop the skills needed for a healthy lifestyle, and encourage them to form and maintain meaningful relationships.

A belief that every child is able to learn and experience success.

Recognition and responsiveness to differing learning needs through exposure to a variety of targeted teaching strategies.

The valuing of diversity within and beyond the school community.

The encouragement of students to show respect for themselves, others, property, environment, laws and all cultures that they interact with.

Student Leaders will be called upon to support Teachers in maintaining expectations in learning and behaviour at Elanora State School. This will involve being a role model and mentor for younger students and new students to Elanora State School.

LEADERSHIP ROLES

Student Leaders - School Ambassador

Attend and participate in school events.

Organise and lead school assemblies.

Contribute as an active member of the Student Representative Council.

Coordinate various activities that directly result from student council decision-making.

Represent the student body at all times.

Be a part of appropriate school committees as required.

Attend and represent the school at extra-curricular events – ANZAC ceremony, award ceremonies, school functions.

Conduct tours of the school for special guests as needed.

Chair the annual Presentation Night.

Give a speech at Presentation Night reflecting on the past year as a Student Leader.

Thank guests/visitors for providing information, entertainment or service for students.

Represent the school as a good ambassador:

Speak on behalf of students.

Welcome visitors to our school.

Student Leaders- The Arts

Assist The Arts teachers with all rehearsals.

Model rehearsal practices, eg. Leading warm-ups, demonstrate correct note reading, playing techniques and Dance routines.

Communicate between the Arts and the student body (messages from teachers and also feedback to teachers from students).

Take lead roles in concerts, presentations and shows eg. Stage management, MC and other assistance.

Assist judges in talent quests, art competitions, Speechmakers etc.

Student Leaders- Sport and Recreation

Assist HPE teachers in the operation of the ‘Smart Moves’ program before school (organisation and borrowing of sport gear).

Assist the HPE teachers in the organising, running and packing up for Sport Carnivals and competitions.

Take on additional responsibilities to assist with Interschool sport.

Report results on parades during interschool sports seasons.

Conduct lunch time sport/ fitness program.

Assist the Chaplain with small group sessions with younger students.

Organise intra-school sport challenges.

Help promote sporting events within school community.

Student Leaders - Community Development

Assist the Student Well Being Teacher with the Lead to Succeed Program, Charity Programs, and Community Involvement Programs.

Promote the Lead to Succeed program and School Rules on school parades and in classes and playground areas.

Assist with the organisation of playground mediators and their rosters and responsibilities.

Assist the Chaplain with playground groups.

Help with Charity program including Free Dress days.

Assist with community visitors to the school.

LEADERSHIP CRITERIA

To be considered as a Student Leader at Elanora State School students must display the following characteristics of an effective leader.

Leadership

Nominee:

Demonstrates pride in the school by always wearing their full school uniform, including full black shoes.

Consistently works well with others and displays teamwork skills.

Shows initiative and positively influences other students.

Willingly participates in school activities to the best of their abilities.

Shows respect to all members of the school community.

Can be trusted at all times.

Abides by the School Discipline Plan.

Upholds rules and values of the school

Communication

Nominee is able to communicate effectively with all members of the school community through:

Speaking clearly, fluently and cohesively in front of an audience.

Communicating messages or ideas effectively.

Listening thoughtfully to others.

Involvement in the School and the Wider Community

Nominee participates in extra-curricular activities within which he/she has been actively and responsibly involved. Activities could include interschool sport, music programs, fund-raising, lunch-time programs, scouts, SLSC nippers, sporting clubs, church groups etc.

PROCEDURE FOR APPOINTMENT

Student Leaders

Students who are interested in being a Student Leader in Year 6 must nominate their intent on the appropriate form. Students are able to nominate for more than one position. They must complete the application by indicat-ing the positions for which they are nominating. Students are required to complete their nominations during their own time.

Nominations will be considered by the Principal and representatives of the teaching staff to determine eligibility using the above criteria.

Selected students will prepare a speech to be delivered to the student body. The student body will then vote for their selected nominee.

INDUCTION OF OUR STUDENT LEADERS

Elected Student Leaders for 2018 will be announced by the end of Term 4, 2017.They will be awarded their Leadership badges at a special student Leadership Induction Ceremony early in Term 1.

CONSEQUENCES AND PROCEDURES FOR INABILITY TO PERFORM

LEADERSHIP DUTIES SUCCESSFULLY

Students who do not perform their leadership duties in a manner that is reflected in our Motto and Values and our Responsible Behaviour Plan will lose their leadership role. The student and their parents will be informed of the reasons for this decision by the principal.

Address the following criteria to the best of your ability. This will be used to determine your eligibility for nomination as a Student Leader.

You may apply for more than one of the listed Student Leader positions.

Submit in writing to Mrs Neate by Monday 9 October 2017

If you are applying for more than one position, you will need to address the questions for each position separately and

number the boxes in the order of preference.

Short listed candidates will be announced on Monday 23 October with speeches presented and elections being held as part of assembly on Tuesday 31 October, 2017.

Student Leaders will be announced to the school community before the end of the year and badges will be presented at the Student Leaders Induction Ceremony early in Term 1 2018.

Attach your application to this sheet, staple them together and hand in to the school office.
