Until next time,

Your Principal, Bill Gillespie

A huge thank you to the Elanora Heights communityThis Friday is my last day at Elanora Heights Public School.

When I look back on my time spent at the school I have been very fortunate to have met a lot of wonderful people who provided outstanding support to me and for the school. These are people who work quietly in the background, not for the recognition but for the students at the school.

I would also like to thank my staff for their support and encouragement. Elanora Heights is very fortunate to have such wonderful people teaching our students.

Thank you everyone for your support and assistance while I was Principal. Elanora Heights Public School and the school community will always hold a special place in my heart.

Staff changes at the schoolThere are a number of changes taking place as a result of my retirement. Mrs Lomas will be relieving Principal and Ms Pitt will be relieving Deputy Principal. Mrs Sally Oakes will be taking Ms Pitt’s class for the rest of this term while she is on the position of relieving Deputy Principal.

At the end of this term Mrs Yardley will be retiring as Assistant Principal of the school. Mrs Yardley has spent many years at the school and led the transition to school program. I know a lot of parents would like to thank Mrs Yardley who has gone out of her way to ensure all children feel safe and welcomed at our school.

I would like to thank Mrs Yardley for her outstanding contribution to our school.

On a personal note, I want to wish Mrs Yardley all the best for the future and I will miss her professional and personal friendship, however, all is not lost. While Mrs Yardley will no longer be an Assistant Principal at the school she will continue to work one day a week on 1O’R for the rest of the year. Mrs Mobbs, who has been working on 1O’R for one day a week will be taking KY for the rest of the year.

K-2 music performanceDon’t forget to come along and enjoy the K - 2 music concert on Thursday, 30th June.

There are two performances, one at 9:15am and the other at 6pm. Due to restricted seating we are asking that the evening performance be adults only. Thank you for your understanding.

P&C meetingThe next P&C meeting is this Wednesday, 15th June. I look forward to seeing you there.

... FAREWELL FROM MRS YARDLEYAt the end of this term I will be retiring.

It has been a long, hard decision to make, however, being able to find a caring and nurturing teacher, Mrs Mobbs (nee Miss Johnson), to take over KY has made it easier.

Being at Elanora Heights PS has been a wonderful place to end a very long career. I have taught many kindergarten children at Elanora and they have given me so much pleasure watching them grow and learn.

I would like to thank all the parents. Your support and hard work has made us a team in the education of your child.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been able to work collegially with such a talented staff and I have made so many special friends. Thank you staff.

I will not be gone for good as I am coming back one day a week for the rest of the year. I am very grateful to be able to continue my passion, teaching.

ER

Y... Farewell Mr Gillespie

Mr Bill Gillespie started at EHPS in 2012, succeeding Anne Poole as Principal, and retires this Friday. Bill’s time with us was all too brief but very effective.

Long term parents have witnessed a transformation of the school at many different levels from the physical appearance (turning circle roundabout with its herbaceous borders and signage, a new driveway replacing the bone breaker that resembled a patch work quilt, extensive painting in school colours, the top track upgrade, the renewed Library, upgraded art rooms, stage lighting, bottom oval, the results of numerous working bees where he actively participated) and the implementation of a very fine set of values that can be easily absorbed by students and community alike.

The school has achieved year on year improvement with NAPLAN and this speaks volumes for leadership and the quality of the school’s teachers.

His commitment to the P&C has always been manifest and he has smoothed the way for the implementation of many ideas and suggestions from the community for the benefit of students.

At a personal level I’ve had the opportunity to work with Bill on a number of projects that link the school with the wider community and one stand-out was the creation of the school’s 5 year plan. I came away from that experience seeing passion and professionalism that public education certainly enjoys at EHPS. Bill’s commitment and drive lies behind the many things our school stands for and the creation of a culture of continuous improvement in every aspect of school life.

On behalf of the P&C and the school community I extend our warm thanks and appreciation for all you have done and wish you a rewarding and happy retirement.

You will be remembered well.

Next P&C MeetingThe next P&C Meeting will be held next week on Wednesday, 15 June at 7.15pm in the staffroomThe Agenda and last meeting minutes are attached to this Newsletter.

• Restarting small vegie garden• Your turn

MUSICA VIVA.....|.....MRS CULLENMusica Viva Concert – TODAY, Tuesday 14th JuneStudents from K - 4 are enjoying a performance today by “The Chambermaids” – five women playing a variety of musical styles with their range of wind instruments.

You are welcome to attend either the K - 2 concert at 11:15am or the performance for Years 3 and 4 at 1:45pm.

ANNELIESE IS BOUND FOR RIO!...|...MRS HAMMONDCONGRATULATIONS to former Elanora Heights PS student Anneliese Rubie who is Rio bound following her selection in the Australian Olympic team! Amazing!

Anneliese attended EHPS from 1996 to 2003 and was named Elanora Heights PS Sports Champion in 2003! Some of her EHPS teachers were Ms Zaratsian, Mrs O’Reilly, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Hagon and Mrs Morrison. Ms Zaratsian said, ‘Anneliese was an all round student. She was a great student in the classroom and excelled at any sport.’

We have some exciting classroom activities planned to help support Anneliese with her Olympic journey…… stay tuned.

Anneliese would love to hear from you! Please send her a message of encouragement - it’s easy.

Click on the link below, it will take you to Anneliese’s athlete biography. Click on ‘Send a Message’ underneath her photo.

Your message will not be shown on her fan wall instantly as it needs to be checked by the AOC first.

The Delights happening in the Heights! To volunteer call 9913 2721The canteen has rebranded its once-per-term Fun Day as a Red Light Day. This change reflects the traffic light guidelines published by NSW Health. The guidelines only allow the school to hold two ‘red light’ days per term.

Red Light foods are high in salt, saturated fat and/or kilojoules. We are continuing our sausage sizzle, but are shifting towards old-fashioned treats that aren’t as high in sugar as lollies.

On offer will be Anzac biscuits, chocolate crackles, honey joys and pineapple coconut slice. The serving size of each

treat will be child size.

Get your orders in now via munch monitor or send back the order form coming home soon.

You have most likely received a canteen flyer from your class parent in the past week. This flyer detailed the changes that are taking place at the canteen and why.

We are also asking that you consider volunteering. We are in urgent need of more volunteers to continue our made-from-scratch menu. Even an hour or two per term can make a difference. In particular, we are looking for more volunteers on a Friday from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Please drop by the canteen to have a chat with Erku or Karen. Our term three roster will be getting drawn up soon, so please let us know if you are available.

Thank you to everyone who has swapped to www.munchmonitor.com. It is making our job easier at the canteen to collate orders and keep you up-to-date with our evolving menu.

If you need to create an account, please use our school ID ‘Elanora’ and school password ‘munch2101’ to get started.

Please note that some of our menu prices have increased since the long weekend.

... DAMAGED CLASSROOMTowards the end of the January school holidays there was a powerful storm that caused major damage to one of our classrooms located along the middle oval near the water tanks. The SES was alerted and came to the rescue to secure the damaged classroom with tarps and to clear most of the fallen tree debris.

Unfortunately extensive damage was done to the roof tiles, awning and rafters and the window frame was pulled away from the building due to a massive gum tree falling on the roof. There was a great deal of water damage as well. What a mess!

The repairs got underway at the beginning of Term 2 and so far, the work men have replaced the roof tiles, rafters, internal ceiling, carpet and the classroom has also been repainted. Currently there is a high lift machine on site to assist the workmen to get high enough to attach the new window frame to the building. Finally, the awnings will be installed.

If all goes according to plan, it is estimated that 2ST will be able to move into their classroom for the beginning of Term 3. Hopefully!
