PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Parents, Grandparents and Friends,

Another busy fortnight has sped by and we are already half way through Term 4. Christmas is certainly now on the horizon!

Maths Challenge CampLast week many students from across the northern beaches attended the annual Maths Challenge Camp, organised by our very own resident maths expert, Mrs Laurinda Lomas. The students participated in two fun filled days of brain-stretching fun and I would like to thank Mrs Lomas, along with Mr Dave Waters and Miss Charlotte Reddan for their assistance at the camp. What a wonderful opportunity for students to work collaboratively with students from other schools.

K-2 Strings PerformanceLast week our Strings students performed for our students in K-2 as part of their strings recruitment for 2019 and what a beautiful performance it was! Congratulations to all of our strings students, along with their talented conductors, Fiona Brock, Mark Stevens and Melody van der Wallen. If you would like your child to join either the strings or the band program, please see the front office for an application form.

Understanding Anxiety In Your Chid – Parent Presentation next Monday November 19All parents are invited to attend a special presentation next Monday November 19 on Understanding Anxiety in Your Child. The presentation will be led by Prof Jennie Hudson from the Cool Kids Program at Macquarie University and promises to be filled with excellent advice on how to support your child when they are feeling anxious. Please RSVP via the link below to enable us to determine numbers if you haven’t already done so. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KZZQQJG. Presentation will be in the school hall.

Kindergarten Parent Information Evening – Tuesday November 20Our final Kindergarten Orientation session was held last Friday, with a special information night for all new parents being held next Tuesday 20 November at 6:30pm in the Library. On this evening, parents will have an opportunity to meet key people within the EHPS community, along with learning more about school routines and the Best Start Assessments. We look forward to sharing this information with you and invite any other new parents along who would like to learn more about our fabulous school.

P & C and Class Parents Meetings Next WeekNext Wednesday night we will be holding our AGM for the P & C at 7pm, followed by our final meeting for the year. We will also be holding our last Class Parents meeting on Thursday at 9:15am. Both meetings will be held in the staffroom and we look forward to seeing you all there. Please see the P & C section for more information regarding the agenda items.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Year 5 Visit our Nation’s CapitalWe would like to thank our wonderful Year 5 teachers, Mrs Zaratsian, Mrs Hagon, Miss

Reddan and Mrs Cullinan for accompanying our students on their 3 day visit to Canberra this week. This represents a huge commitment of time for our staff, of whom we are incredibly grateful. The students thoroughly enjoyed their first big experience away from home and their behaviour was exemplary. Well done students – we are looking forward to hearing all your adventures!

Live Life Well @ School FilmingIt was all Lights, Camera, Action! this week as we welcomed a film crew to capture the excellent programs we provide at Elanora Heights as part of the Live Life Well @ School program, such as Eat A Rainbow and Make Your Own Lunch. Being chosen as an exemplar school

is a great honour, with the video being promoted throughout NSW to inspire other schools to follow our example.

This is a credit to the many incredible parents and staff involved in the program, including Mrs Jenny Cullen, Mrs Rebecca New, Mrs Barb La Ganza, Mrs Janine Ralston, Mrs Carly Skeers, Mrs Jasmine McEvoy and Mrs Bec Moreno who all ensure that our students develop life-long healthy eating habits as part of their positive wellbeing. We will send the link out for the video once it has been edited in post-production!

K-2 Music Concert – change in dates previously advertised!Parents are invited to a special K-2 music concert at 2pm on Friday December 14 to celebrate the end of the year. Previously we had advertised 3 separate concerts, but we have decided to combine these into one event due to our change in music teacher late in the year. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this date change and hope to see you many of you there to sing along with some Christmas carols.

This Sunday our band and strings students will be performing at the Pittwater RSL Club, along with being entertained by the Navy Band. This promises to be a fantastic afternoon so come along around 3pm for some foot-tapping fun!

We have another busy week ahead, which will culminate in our choir singing at the Schools Spectacular…. an event not to be missed! Until next time, Leesa Martin Principal

... FROM THE DEPUTY Maths Camp Report

Last week on Monday and Tuesday, Year 5 students Amelie E, Kiara K, Lewin C, Orlando G, Ryan W, Wilbur K and Wil W went to the Maths Challenge Camp. The camp was filled with a variety of students and teachers from 20 different schools. The teachers from Elanora included Mrs Lomas, Mr Waters and Miss Reddan.

Our two main goals were to work like a Mathematician and make a new friend, which everyone succeeded in. We worked like a Mathematician by: Defining the problem, Experimenting, Collecting and Organising Data, Seeking a Pattern and Reflecting. We used this method throughout the camp and it was a main focus for everyone.

Some of our Maths challenges were: making an Escher tessellation pattern, investigating a Fibonacci sequence pattern, creating Platonic Solids (regular 3D objects where all the sides are polygons), and looking for patterns in a Pascal’s Triangle Challenge. Our final challenge was to create a life-size Dome

using poles and connecters based on looking at a much smaller model.

For the two days we were split into four groups based on the famous mathematicians Escher, Fibonacci, Plato and Pascal. Over the course of the two days we were given points for thinking like a mathematician, working well with others and showing good manners. At the end, the points were added up and Pascal won!!!

Overall Maths Camp was an enjoyable and challenging experience. It was challenging to look

for a range of patterns and think about what might happen next. Sometimes we could not see the patterns in the beginning but when we persevered we found them!

We loved meeting our new friends.

. New Playground Here are a couple of pictures of the new recently installed playground. There is a slippery dip we are waiting on and that should finish the job nicely. It’s a vast improvement on what was here!

What has the P&C achieved this year? Does it matter?

We had some valuable discussion last week around: is the P&C relevant? Really it is only relevant to those who want it to be. We have a number of people right now who do quite a lot for the school but as those parents’ children move through the school they will move on too. We are all leading busy lives and the motivation to participate in a voluntary organisation has to be to get a personal benefit, simply a joy in making a difference. It doesn’t matter if it’s the P&C or the any other organisation like a local surf club. If what is happening at school or how your child’s experiences at school can be improved is important to you, we will see you at next week’s AGM.

If there are any points you would like to raise for the meeting’s agenda or if you would like to nominate for a vacating position on the committee please email the gmail account: [email protected] There are a number of positions that will need to be filled and we can only do what we do if they are. If you’ve wondered when is a good time to have a go, it is now. See you next week.

... YEAR 6 MARKET DAY Next Week!!!Hi again!!

A reminder that we are celebrating Year 6 Market Day next week on Tuesday November 20.

Year 6 stalls will be located on the Middle Oval with activities and games being on the Top Oval and Sports Storeroom.

Our Year 6 Market Day will include two parts. One is our market and stalls which will be run during recess and lunch while the other is our fun games and activities which will take place from the end of lunch (approximately for an hour in the afternoon 1:25pm-2:25pm).

Year 6 have been working hard in groups to prepare stalls that will involve art and craft and healthy foods and drinks. We have had some great sessions with some of our parents to help prepare and think of creative food and drink alternatives. These items will be sold to K-5 students during recess and lunch followed by activities and games for all to participate in.

Art and craft items include: necklaces, bracelets, hair feathers, fairy dust, scrunchies, pet rocks, orbeez, parracord bracelets, skate wax, pom poms, rock art, bookmarks, key chains, stress balls, noughts and crosses game with bag, pom pom pencils, pencil cases, anklets, fake snow, lip scrub and balm and face painting. Prices range from 20c up to $3.

The purpose of Market Day is for Year 6 to showcase their wonderful collaborative and creative skills with the goal of raising as much money as possible for a gift for the school.

Year 6 teachers will also be running a separate stall on the day where they will be selling raffle tickets to students. These raffle tickets are used by K-5 students to play the activities and game after lunch. Raffle tickets can be purchased for 50c each or 3 for $1.

We are asking K-5 students who wish to purchase items at the stall, or raffle tickets for the games and activities that they bring no more than $10 on the day.

Year 6 students have begun their promotion campaigns for their stalls and activities through posters around the school and presentations at morning lines. These will continue on Monday and Tuesday next week!!

We can’t wait to see everyone and thank you for your continued support of this Year 6 initiative.

... Annual Christmas Gift Appeal....Stewart House, Bear Cottage & Dalwood Spilstead CentreIn previous years we have supported the annual Christmas Gift Appeal organised by Wiseberry Real Estate, Mona Vale. This appeal has always been extremely well supported by the Elanora Heights School Community.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has endorsed this initiative again in 2018 which has been the SRC’s major fund raising drive each year.

Supporting this drive targets our designated charity Stewart House. Bear Cottage and Dalwood Spilstead Centre will also be recipients of gifts. It is an activity which is in keeping with the spirit of Christmas - giving and thinking of others less fortunate than ourselves. I’m sure our efforts will again bring a great deal of joy to the sick children of Bear Cottageand the students of Stewart House and the Dalwood Spilstead Centre.

The Christmas Gift Appeal will begin next week on Monday November 19 (Week 6) and continue until Wednesday December 5 (Week 8).

These gifts will be collected on Wednesday December 5 which is the date of the Christmas Mufti Day (see information below).

The gifts are to be brought to school in a gift bag, unwrapped and with a tag indicating the age and gender suitability. The target age is from 6-17 years.

Each gift is inspected for safety before being distributed hence the need for the gift to be unwrapped for inspection.

We have been advised again this year to avoid gifts requiring batteries.

The SRC member’s job throughout this period is to encourage their peers to bring in gifts and oversee the collection of gifts in their classrooms.

Crazy Christmas Hair and Mufti DayThe colours of Christmas in your hair and what you wear!

On Wednesday December 5 (Week 8) we will hold a ‘Crazy Christmas Hair and Mufti Day’ as the culmination to our Christmas Gift Appeal.

There will be no gold coin donation as is the usual practice with Mufti Days - the gift is the donation.

We hope you will embrace the SRC in their efforts to support a worthwhile initiative.

... EHPS CAPA NewsBand Blow Test Day and Training Band 2019Congratulations to all of our Year 2 students who attended our “Blow Test Day” on Thursday November 1 in the hall. I’ve received many great comments from our tutors about the great sounds our young musicians were already able to get on their instruments.

Notes have gone home to Year 2 students, but if your child is in Years 3, 4 or 5 they are also eligible to join Training Band in 2019. Contact a member of our music committee or myself for more details!

Don’t forget to return your Training Band 2019 note ASAP to ensure your child gets their first preference for their instrument. Places are filling fast!

Strings Bow Test Day

Last Wednesday our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students were treated to a fantastic concert by our String Ensembles and string program instrumental tutors. We are currently calling for expressions of interest from students moving into Year 2 or higher in 2019.

A “Bow Test” was held on Wednesday after lunch for interested students. Please contact Fiona Brock or myself if you’d like more information.

Schools Spec rehearsalsWell done to our 2018 Schools Spectacular Choir for their participation in our second Arena Choir rehearsal at Genea Netball Centre yesterday. The show this year is shaping up to be amazing!

Bands End of Year ConcertThis Sunday November 18 our amazing bands will be presenting their end of year concert in conjunction with The Royal Australian Navy Band Sydney. All members of our school community are welcome to come along and enjoy a great afternoon of entertaining performances.

The concert will be held at Pittwater RSL and starts at 3pm. We hope to see you there!

FILM STARS WITH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!This was a huge week for our LLW@S team and the excited students participating in the filming of our school’s unique activities. The filming occurred on Thursday and Friday after a planning visit on Monday.

Another rousing thank you is due to our hardworking parent committee who organised demo events. Take a bow: Janine Ralston, Carly Skeers, Jody Seaton, Barb la Ganza, Bec Moreno and Jasmine McEvoy. They presented nutritional talks and a smorgasbord buffet to showcase Eat a Rainbow and Make My Own Lunch, with wraps, salad jars and Bliss Balls.

Another Elanora original created by Barb is the Birthday Platter of enticing cut fruit arranged as a rainbow. Jasmine, a graphic artist, has created a new design for our Make My Own Lunch Home Challenge card. The skills, enthusiasm and generosity of this dream team have led to our school being chosen as an exemplary school, worthy of our own little film to inspire others. Want to be part of this dynamic team? Just contact us through the office at: [email protected] or Ph: 9913 7283Our next meeting is on Tuesday November 20, 3.00pm in the Stellar room.

And a big thank you to all of you – our parent body who support our regular good habits of daily Fruito-vego and water bottles, special Rainbow Fruito-vego days and healthy lunchboxes all year round. The children crunched through a wonderful range of green fruits and vegetables today. We are in our tenth year of fruito-vego and it is just an expected part of the morning. A reminder that a labelled water bottle should also come to school each day and is available for drinking in class. Talking of labels – please check all your containers still have clear labels as many have worn off and the lost property tubs outside the office are overflowing. Please come and take any that are unlabelled as we do not want to throw them away.

Year 6 Market Day – healthy treats coming up!The Elanora Heights Healthy Food Strategy applies to all school events and this year the traditional Year 6 fundraising event is to be a Market Day, with a new health emphasis.

Barb and Carly visited Year 6 and gave a healthy treat demonstration to show some more wholesome alternatives to “party style” foods that are also absolutely yummy and inviting. By making their own foods to sell, they are learning kitchen skills and also creating much less waste. K-5 students will be able to purchase these treats at the market day stalls.
