Until next time,

Your Principal, Bill Gillespie

Book WeekThis week is Book Week and we will be celebrating the event with a Book Parade on Wednesday at 9:30 am and an author talk on Friday. The visiting author is Maddie Duncan, a former student of our school. Please come along to the Book Parade on Wednesday. NB: There will be no school parking available on the day.

K – 2 Athletics CarnivalThe K – 2 Athletics Carnival planned for this Thursday, 27th August has been POSTPONED and has been re-scheduled for Thursday, 3rd September. Please let us know if you are able to assist us on the day.

P&C Working BeeCan you help us this Saturday from 1 – 4pm? We are looking at removing some Asparagus Fern and doing some general garden work around the school. Please come along, even if only for an hour and join us. We will be having a well-deserved BBQ at the end of the day.

Move-a-thonHow are the sponsorships going? Remember sponsorship forms along with the money need to be returned by Monday, 7th September. If you have misplaced the form another is available from the front office. The class that raises the most money with be given a Pizza Party.

Teddy Bear’s PicnicWhat a fantastic day! I had the pleasure of spending the entire time with our new 2016

Kindergarten students and took a number of pictures of the children and the activities. The images can be found on our school website. What impressed me the most was our current Kindergarten and Year 5 students who looked after and guided our future students during the day. It was fantastic to see so many students modelling our core values of RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY.

Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS) Science FairThe annual PCS Science Fair will be held on Wednesday, 2nd September and once again we will be having a number of students representing the school. The theme for the Fair is “The Science of Light”. I would like to thank Miss Powell and Miss Johnson for giving up their time so that we can have such an impressive appearance at the Fair.

P&C MeetingThe next P&C meeting is this Wednesday, 26th August at 7:15pm in the staffroom. I look forward to seeing you there.

... BOOK WEEK.....|.....Anne-Marie Morrison, Teacher-LibrarianCHARACTER PARADE and AUTHOR VISIT REMINDER

The Book Character Parade is for all students K-6 and will be held this Wednesday 26th August at 9.30am. Costumes are to be made at home and students are asked to wear these to school and remain in them for the whole school day, if comfortable. Those who need to change, if their costume is awkward, may do so at the conclusion of the parade, however I ask that parents assist and then take the student’s costume home.

PARENTS ARE WELCOME and the Canteen will be open from 9am offering light refreshments. Coffee, Tea and Hot Chocolate, cheesy toast, banana bread and fruit muffins will be available. After purchasing refreshments please make your way to the middle oval to view the parade. Please be advised there will be NO PARKING on the school grounds during this event.

Remember, characters are to be chosen from a book in our school library, in order that others may be motivated to borrow the books their characters represent. All children will be acknowledged and rewarded for their well represented characters and participation. We will also be looking for the most authentic, colourful, funniest, outrageous and the most effort demonstrated. It is necessary all children wear a label or hold a sign to let others know which character they are representing.

The Author Visit is scheduled for Friday morning, 28th August. Kristin Prescott and Maddie Duncan will be presenting two workshops for students, one at 9:15am -10:00am for Years 5 - 6 and10:10am – 10:55am for years 3 - 4.

We are looking forward to an exciting week.

NB: For those who may still need some help with choices of characters, below are some suggested texts with great characters: (you may choose from both lists)

LEARN to LEAD.....|.....JAIME M (6S)On Thursday I did Touch Football with Year 5 because I always see them playing Touch Football on the top oval, so I decided to try to make it a full game with a referee and a full field.

At first I thought that no one would show up and said to all my helpers to pack up. Fortunately, they told me to wait and see if anyone was going to come and play. A few people came, enough to play a game and we all played and it was really fun. I had about 15 to 20 people including 3 girls. We had lots of fun and I packed up and they suggested that I should do cricket which was a great idea, which I would never have come up with, and netball for the girls.

Overall I had a pretty great experience since I have never worked with Year 5 before.

LEARN to LEAD.....|.....SAM K (School Captain & 6P)On Wednesday the 19th of August, I organised a L2L session with Year 1 on the middle oval. We all had a lot of fun playing “Corners” and “Midnight”.

I definitely recommend it for all the other members of the L2L Team as it is easy to organise and the 14 Year 1s who participated found all the instructions really simple and easy to follow.

Special thanks to Ben P and Connor S for helping it all run smoothly.

LIVE LIFE WELL @ SCHOOL YELLOW Fruito-Vego

When: Tuesday, 1st September

Start spring with a burst of fresh fruits and vegetables. On Tuesday, 1st September please send yellow fruits or vegetables for fruito-vego e.g. bananas, yellow capsicum, yellow tomatoes, corn, pineapple, grapefruit, honeydew melon, starfruit. Can you find more? Surprise us!

Rainbow fruito-vego is one way to keep children trying new fresh foods. Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important to obtain varied micro-nutrients. Below is some nutritional information about yellow foods from Elanora ex-parent and nutritionist, Martha Leonard.

YELLOW FOODSThe yellow colour in food is an indication of lutein and zeaxanthin content. These two compounds are carotenoids.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are particularly important in eye health. They have shown to protect against macular degeneration, a form of blindness that affects many older people.

Yellow boost smoothie: 1 banana, pineapple slices, honeydew melon, one orange, ice, 1 tablespoon of honey (optional). Put all ingredients in the blender and blend… add a little yogurt or ice cream for extra creaminess.

Ever thought about donating non-perishable items such as tea towels, containers, cleaning products etc? Donating such items (listed below) is just another way to help the canteen minimise costs and to continue to keep food prices as low as possible for our children. All canteen donations are welcome and appreciated; which can be delivered directly to the canteen.

VOLUNTEERINGBelow is the volunteer roster for weeks 7 to 9 of Term 3, 2015 The canteen strongly relies on volunteers to help operate and serve food to our children. To volunteer, please email Iolanda Hazell on [email protected] or call the canteen on 9913 2721.

.. Hurry Up SlowlyThe hares had the early running but the tortoises are ever so slowly bridging the gap. The pace may be a little on the slow side but a trickle is better than nothing at all. A massive thank you to the 107 families who have very generously contributed $10,906 to the P&C Voluntary Contribution fund, you are leading the way for a better resourced education for our children.

So far 28% of families have made a contribution. Surely we can do better than this. There are 273 families who can still make a contribution and at $33 each (65 cents

per week or 10 cents per day, one flat white per MONTH, surely this is doable!) it would get us to the target and make a significant contribution to the resourcing of our school. Remember, any amount is better than nothing at all. Contributions in cash are accepted by placing your donation in a clearly marked envelope with your Surname and class(es) in the P&C letterbox outside Mrs Millar’s office.A copy of the contribution form is on page 10 of this newsletter.

Working BeeAt the last meeting of the P&C it was agreed that the working bee cancelled last term will now take place this Saturday, 29th August from 1pm to 4pm. A thank you sausage sizzle will be provided to all who help on the day.
