This year has certainly been exciting and eventful at Belmont Village of Sunnyvale. Some of my favorite memories from 2015 include: the Heroes BBQ, the Luau, Happy Birds, the Summer Music series, and the American Heroes Portraits of Service Veterans gallery. I also have fond memories of the collective excitement residents and staff shared as we watched the Golden State Warriors make history by winning the 2015 NBA Championship title. As I look back over the last year, I can’t help but think of the friends to which we have bid farewell along with the new friends we have welcomed into our community. Although our community family changes throughout the months, I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the community continues to grow and develop. Thank you all for making Belmont Village of Sunnyvale such a special community. Employee Appreciation Fund Many of you have already received an invitation to contribute to the Belmont Village of Sunnyvale Employee Appreciation Fund. At the end of each year, our residents and families have the opportunity to contribute to this fund to show the staff appreciation for their service. The staff at Belmont Village of Sunnyvale have shown extreme dedication as they have served our families and residents over the past year. Whether working extra shifts or providing care and comfort during challenging transitions, I have been consistently inspired by our staff. Please join me in acknowledging our staff through your contributions to this year’s appreciation fund. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season! Radhika Singh Executive Director

Circle of FriendsIt’s that time of year to

celebrate in the holiday spirit.Circle of Friends will be joining inthe festivities by decorating for thewinter season, drinking eggnog, eating a scrumptious holidaydinner, singing carols, wrappingpresents, and crafting creativeornaments. We’ll also be thinkingabout what makes us joyful.People gravitate toward those whoare positive and light-hearted.When we are in good moods, weare able to uplift the spirits ofothers. The greatest gift we couldgive is love – affection toward ourloved ones, compassion for thoseunfortunate, companionship tothe solitary, warmth andadmiration toward others. Smallkindnesses give hope, comfort, and happiness to people. It’s alsoa great opportunity to bring asense of peace and clarity to yourdays as you reflect on what makesyou feel most fulfilled in life.

Neighborhood NewsThe Neighborhood residents

will be bringing in the holidayspirit through baking. We’ll bemaking fruitcake to please ourpalates. Though, this is not theonly reason why we are doingthis. It is a way for us to bringchildlike glee to our hearts, blissfulness to our souls, andharmony to our minds. Sharingmeals brings people together, making them feel warmth, light, and a sense of community.Knowing the tradition and historyof the food can be just as fun aseating them. The food we intakealso has nutritional value, supporting us in many ways:improving blood sugar, mood, memory, hormonal balance, andenergy. May this holiday seasonbring you and your familyexcellent health, joviality, goodfortune, and tranquility.

Fitness CornerEnjoying the Holidays

for SeniorsFor many older adults, the

holidays can be highly stressful, confusing, or even depressing.

But you can enjoy the holidayseason more by following thesesimple tips, based on advicefrom specialists at the Universityof California, San Diego Schoolof Medicine:

• Stroll down memory lane.Holidays provokememories, which can beespecially powerful in thelater years of life. “Leadingauthorities have observedthat memory and ‘lifereview’ are important partsof the aging process,” saysBarry Lebowitz, Ph.D., ofUCSD’s Stein Institute forResearch on Aging. “Olderpeople whose memoriesare impaired may havedifficulty rememberingrecent events, but they areoften able to share storiesand observations fromthe past.

• Reach out. Socialconnectedness is especiallyimportant at holiday times.“Reaching out to olderrelatives and friends whoare alone is something allof us should do,” Lebowitzsays.

‘Tis the Seasonfor Health

The holiday season is a favoritetime of year for many people, butit can be easy to overlook dietwith all the delicious foods, andeven easier to neglect exercise.Exercise is beneficial for everyone, and is especially beneficial forseniors over 65 years of age andolder. As the body ages, it takes alittle longer to repair itself, butphysical activity benefits people ofall ages and activity levels.

Starting or maintaining aregular exercise routine can bechallenging as you age, especiallyif you are discouraged by illness, health problems, and injuries orfalls. While these factors can bediscouraging, these reasons areactually the best reasons to getstarted and keep moving. Thereare many benefits to exercise, andit can be enjoyable, especiallywith other like-minded people.

Regular exercise has numerous

benefits, including increasingenergy, improving mood andsleep, maintaining independence, lowering chances of injury, relieving stress, and eveneliminating symptoms of illnessor pain. Many medical conditionsare also improved with regularexercise such as diabetes, highblood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity, coloncancer, and Alzheimer’s anddementia. Exercise can alsoimprove your overall sense ofwell-being. It is the key to stayingstrong and healthy.
