I cannot believe how fast 2016 has gone by. As we say goodbye to 2016 and welcome a brand new year, I want to thank the many residents and families who made donations to our Employee Appreciation Fund. Our staff is truly grateful for the generosity and appreciation shown to them. This past year has been a whirlwind of activity, and with 2017 upon us, my mind continues to race on to what’s next. Last year we experienced many events that will now be known as monumental moments in history. When I reflect about where we are in this world, I think of a quote from Harriet Tubman I heard years ago as a child: “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” As we see so much violence in the world today, the power to change is within us. If we start within ourselves and pour out our love to others, it becomes similar to the domino effect. The impact one person can make is far more than what most can imagine, and as a team, we can do the impossible. I encourage you all this year to remain strong, patient and to never give up on opportunities or experiences. There is so much in store for us this coming year. My hopes are that one day there will be peace on earth; but in the meantime, let’s all work together to help make the impossible possible. Building Updates The last quarter of 2016, we underwent a renovation here at Belmont Village Sunnyvale. We replaced flooring on the first floor, painted all the common areas and hallways in the entire building, and welcomed brand new furniture and art. It has been a process, but the results are remarkable. We are excited to embrace the new look of the community and based on the comments I have heard throughout the building, I would say, after the dust settled, we all were pleased with the results. I would like to give a special thank you to all of the residents and staff here at the community for being so patient, providing input and recognizing the positives of this renovation. Happy New Year!

Circle of FriendsBy: Kathy Nguyen,

Memory Program Coordinator

January 15th marks National HatDay. Since we are still in thewinter season, it will be a perfecttime to keep our heads warm withdecorative hats. Circle of Friendsresidents will be working with thestaff, utilizing their own creativityand imagination in designinghats. This project will be a greatway for the residents to practicetheir motor skills and maintaindexterity. They will exercise theirtask sequencing skills as well. There are so many differentshapes, sizes and designs that theresidents could create for thisactivity. The hats have not onlybeen used to keep one warm or tomake a fashion statement. Thereare other hats used to denoteone’s occupation and asprotection. The residents candawn their designed hats or givethem as gifts to their loved ones.We look forward to seeing theirfinished designs and possiblydisplay some of them in ourupcoming art boutique.

Neighborhood News

Compliment Day is celebrated onJanuary 24th. A compliment is aword or phrase that statessomething positive about a personor thing. Of course, we givecompliments at other times, notonly on Compliment Day.However, it is nice to givecompliments, especially whenthey are sincere. When was the lasttime you were complimented orgave a compliment? How did itmake you and/or the other personfeel? Providing compliments canbe uplifting and encouraging, butsometimes we may find ourselvesseldom giving or receivingcompliments. Our Neighborhoodresidents and staff will sharemoments when complimentswere exchanged and how thosemoments made them feel. Theywill practice giving complimentsto show acknowledgment, appreciation, and care for eachother. What better way than tocontinue the new year withpositive energy and good feelingsto hold onto? By the way, I thinkyou are just wonderful!

Thyroid DiseaseJanuary is National Thyroid

awareness month. “The thyroid isa small but powerful gland inyour neck. It produces hormonesthat control your metabolism orthe way your body uses energy. Italso influences your heart rate, body temperature, bones, digestion and reproductivesystem. When the thyroidhormones get out of balance, itcan have a profound effect onyour health.”(*1) If undetected, itcould cause high cholesterol, heartdisease and infertility.

There are three types of thyroidconditions 1) Hypothyroidism, anunderactive thyroid, doesn’t makeenough thyroid hormone. Somesymptoms are fatigue, weightgain, low tolerance of cold, dryskin, forgetfulness. 2)Hyperthyroidism, an overactivethyroid, makes too much thyroidhormone. Some symptoms arenervousness, sweating, tremblinghands, irregular heartbeats, insomnia, muscle weakness. 3)

Thyroid nodules often cause nosymptoms, but may cause lumpsin the neck. From thesenodules/lumps, one mayexperience pain, swollen lymphnodes under the jaw, hoarsenessand trouble swallowing. Fewerthan one in 10 nodules arecancerous, but any nodule shouldbe checked by your physician.

“If you have any symptoms of athyroid disorder, see your doctor.Thyroid disorders can be treatedsuccessfully, usually withmedication or surgery.”(*2) Pleasestop by your Wellness Center todiscuss with the nurses’ staff if youneed any assistance with settingup an appointment with yourdoctor.
