about the cover

Meet the Harmon family! Mark is a Project Manager with Skanska USA , a global construction

company. In his spare time he loves running, brewing beer and spending time with his boys

Ethan and Isaac. He and Melissa will have been married 11 years this May and have lived in

the Smyrna area for the past 13 years. When Melissa isn’t busy volunteering for North Metro

Mothers of Multiples Club, at Golden Start Preschool, where the boys attend Pre-K and

part-time marketing for Evene Day Spa, she loves entertaining close friends and family. The

boys enjoy playing soccer, riding their scooters, play dates with friends, and story time at the

Smyrna Public Library. The Harmons’ are looking forward to the arrival of a baby girl this March.

Special thanks to Due Maternity for providing Melissa’s maternity dress and to Love Street Home

for providing a most inviting backdrop for our cover.

The Latest Advances in Surgical Services

at WellStar The constant hum of machines surround the doctors, but it would take the strongest ear tohear the exchange between the two surgeons at work. The procedure- A Whipple – a surgeryinvolving the removal of portions of the pancreas and the most common operation performedfor pancreatic cancer. The complexity comes in the reconstruction necessary after portions ofthe pancreas, duodenum (a part of the small intestine), bile duct and sometimes a portion ofthe stomach are removed. For the surgeon, David R. Elwood, M.D., with WellStar SurgicalAssociates of Marietta, this complex cancer surgery is a specialty.

Just down the hall in WellStar Kennestone Hospital’s Surgery Center, you could also findDouglas Lundy, M.D., of Resurgens Orthopaedics or William Terrell, M.D., of Pinnacle Or-thopaedics attending to the latest “cold trauma” case. Trauma can mean a variety of things topeople, but many will associate the word with the need for fast and immediate care. For clini-cians, “hot traumas” describe patients who have an increased ability to survive the injury ifthey can be cared for within an hour after the trauma.

Once those life-threatening issues have been addressed, their medical team looks to the specificinjuries and what treatments are needed. These “warm or cold” trauma patients come to specialistslike Drs. Lundy and Terrell. Multiple studies have shown that many musculoskeletal injuries arebetter treated on a time-delayed basis, leaving time for soft tissue to recover. Many of the injuriesaffect upper or lower extremities and may also involve the bones of the pelvis itself.

These two examples are a small part of WellStar Surgical Services, which encompasses sevensurgical practices and 23 surgeons, quality inpatient and outpatient surgical programs at allfive WellStar hospitals and the expertise of the clinical teams. These teams are leading the waywith the latest advances in laparoscopic, minimally invasive procedures, as well as image-guidedtechniques. Additions such as the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System continue to change theway surgery is defined. The da Vinci system provides not only the benefits of traditional la-paroscopic surgery — smaller incisions, less bleeding and shorter recovery times — but it alsoprovides a greater range of motion and a digitally clear surgical field for the surgeon. Currentlyavailable at WellStar Kennestone, da Vinci is used in gynecological, urological and cardiac sur-geries.

Other advances include single-incision laparoscopic surgeries, video-assisted thoracic surgeries, gastric bypass — WellStar Kennestone is a Bariatric Center of Excellence and joint replacement.WellStar Cobb, Douglas and Kennestone hospitals have Joint Commission Gold Seal certifi-cations for their Joint Replacement programs.

Image Busters - Details Do CountIn her hilarious book, Didn’t My Skin Used to Fit, humorist and author, Martha Bolton, listsseveral middle-age fashion faux pas. According to Martha, the following combinations do notgo together:

Bikinis and liver spots

Miniskirts and support hose

Ankle bracelets and corn pads

A belly button ring and a gall bladder surgery scar

Martha does have a point; there are just some things that don’t do a thing for our image.

Below are a few other ‘Image Busters’ which aren’t quite as humorous as the ones mentionedabove but still need our attention if we want to look our best:

Poor posture - To look at least 5 pounds slimmer, stand up straight

Ill fitting bra - Another way to look slimmer, buy a good supportive bra

Facial hair - A little peach fuzz is one thing, but 5” hairs sprouting from your chin is another.Invest in a lighted, magnifying mirror or get an honest friend

Yellow/dingy teeth - Crest Premium White strips are amazing!

Out-of-date hair style - A good, flattering haircut is like a facelift

Out-of-date eye wear - Because of their prominence on the face, update eye-glasses everycouple of seasons

Visible roots - stay on a regular hair maintenance program. Your hair is your hardest workingaccessory (Men- keep the back of your neck shaved between haircuts)

Untailored clothing - A few inches here and there make a big difference. Don’t expectclothing straight off the rack to be a perfect fit

As we age, we do have to try a little harder. If we are goingto stay in the game, we have to put forth the effort. The re-ality is we live in a youth obsessed culture. Unfortunately,we baby boomers aren’t as catered to and respected as weshould be, especially since we are the largest demo-graphic group in history. The only people who seemto notice us is AARP. At times, we even turn on our-selves. Some of the comments I heard regarding theSuper Bowl half-time show featuring The Who, one ofmy favorite bands from the 1970’s, were just cruel. I hate thefact that we shudder at the thought of getting older and insult oth-ers who still have the stamina to perform and entertain just becausethey “look old”. If we want others to respect us, we need to re-spect ourselves and appreciate our maturity. Sometimes that mayinclude making a little more effort, but aren’t we worth it?

“Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, butbeautiful old people are works of art.“

— Eleanor Roosevelt

P.S. Martha Bolton will be sharing her good-natured humor with usApril 15th, 2010, at Ladies’ Night Out, First Presbyterian Church ofMarietta. For information, please call Elizabeth Foster at 770-427-0294 ext.241

MARCH ON!!!!!by Mark Orler

For those of you not already aware March is Women’s History Month, or as my wife refersto it “another 31 days of being your slave.” Actually, March is an awesome month crammedso full of fun that we often forget just how great a group of days it is. In March we get toenjoy Mardis Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, March Madness, the Ides of March, possibly Easter andColorectal Cancer Awareness Month. (Okay, maybe “enjoy” isn’t the best word to describethe last one, but you still need to be AWARE of it.)

With all those items jammed into a mere thirty-one days it is easy to see why we could justrush through it and not savor to the fullest these events. That may be why the month ofMarch is the only named month in our calendar that is also a verb, and an exclamatory oneat that! You don’t hear too many people telling their kids to “October your behind into thatbath tub and then April it right to bed Missy!” No ma’am, it’s MARCH!

It is also fitting that March should house Women’s History Month because even though it istouted to have more than thirty-one full days, it really feels like fifteen. If Women’s Historyhas taught us anything it’s that they have historically been promised one thing, like “til deathdo us part, babe” only to end up with another like “or until some younger princess comesalong.”

This would explain why a congress populated primarily by men would grant women themonth of March as a time when we should all sit down and reflect upon the great historicalstrides women have made and then make it the greatest party month of the year surroundedby better things to do. Not that women’s history is not fascinating and shouldn’t be studied, but let’s face it, we men get an earful of women’s history every night when we darken ourdoors.

“Honey, I’m home!”

“Hey dear, how was your day?”

“Well, Sue in accounting dropped a bomb…”

“That’s nice, now let me give you rundown of how my day went!”

(And just so you know, by the time this is published I will have already been apologizing fortwo weeks.)

It is also ironic that some of the most chauvinistic of celebrations should take place whilemost of us will be at our local libraries reading about Susan B. Anthony, Marie Curie, Eliza-beth Blackwell and Victoria Woodhull. I shudder to think of all the beads that will go un-thrown on Bourbon Street because we all will be too busy writing essays on Margaret Thatcherand Joan of Arc. Or the un-poured green beer that will spoil in the kegs of Savannah’s RiverStreet bars, while the population sits in discussion groups debating whether Cleopatra or Sap-pho made the greatest artistic impression to Western Civilization. Not to mention the emptycoliseums and the un-dribbled basketballs waiting for the crowds to return from their scrap-booking circles.

Who are we kidding, by the time you get to the last paragraph in this column you will alreadybe knee-deep in March Madness and the last thing on your mind will be who the first femalepostmaster was…Mary Katherine Goddard. So as we close Women’s History Month we arereminded of the famous words of Marcus Brutus spoke on the Ides of March after assassinat-ing his friend and emperor Julius Caesar, “I come not to mourn Caesar, but to get him outof going to Boggle Night with his wife.” Or something to that affect.

Like I said, I’ve been apologizing for two weeks…March On!

business spotlight

The road to the creation of the Impact Worship Center hasbeen a journey of faith and love for Pastor Arthur Jones andhis wife, Tonya. Our Town met with Pastor Jones and Tonya,a Speech Pathologist employed with the Cobb CountySchool System and Children’s Church Coordinator in Janu-ary where they passionately told us about this incredible paththat they were lead down and the magnificent fruits of theirlabor. Their enthusiasm and dedication is contagious andafter meeting with them, we recognized the passion and drivethat is needed in creating anything successful in life.

Pastor Jones grew up in a family that was dedicated to Godand he says with a glint in his eye, “I was always in church.”His father, Arthur T. Jones, Sr has been a Bishop for 35 yearswith All People International Church based in Florida. Al-though, Pastor Jones holds degrees in Criminal Law, Musicand Business Management he found himself searching for apurpose and was lead to study Theology just like his father. Before relocating to the Atlanta area, Pastor Jones spent 7years in pastoral training under the guidance of his father. He met Tonya, while they were both acting Ministers ofMusic in different church settings. Tonya describes theirmove here as natural. “It was actually a very easy transition. We knew that Atlanta was a wonderful area where we could

begin our ministry. We chose the name Impact to coincidewith the visual movement and the relevance that we had tooffer. The essence of Impact Worship Center is to cultivateand develop leaders in our congregation. The timing wasright and we are so grateful to be here.”

Impact Worship Center officially opened its doors at theCobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta on October 18, 2009. Theychose the Galleria because of its convenient location, popu-larity, professional look and they wanted to relay the messageto potential attendees that they were serious in their ministryfor excellence. Pastor Jones describes the mission of IWC,“Our mission is simply to equip and inspire people to live a‘God First life’. Discover what everyone is talking about…

Tasting wine is a simple pleasure with a simple goal—to find the winesyou love and to verbalize what you love about them. You know whatyou like, but how do you tell others? Tasting wines in a systematicway can help you define what you love about a wine and develop avocabulary that allows you to convey this to your others.

First, SEE the wine. If you hold your glass in front of a white surface, you’ll get a better view of the wine’s color, which can indicate condi-tion and body. The color should appear fresh and bright. Too muchbrown around the edge may mean that the wine has been exposed toair or passed its prime. As a rule, the darker the color the fuller-bodiedthe wine is. Don’t be too concerned about the “legs”, those rivuletsof wine that flow down the sides of the glass. They might indicatethe relative thickness of the wine, but don’t really tell us anythingabout the quality of the wine.

Next SWIRL the wine. This vaporizes the alcohol and carries thescents of the wine to your nose which allows you to savor all the fla-vors of the wine. The human tongue perceives only four tastes, butthe nose can detect thousands of scents and flavor comes from scent.

Now SMELL the wine. Really get your nose in it, in a way that yourmother might not approve. Keep swirling so the vapors keep rising.Think about what you smell. At first you may be able only to tell redfrom white wines, but with more experience you will be able to dif-ferentiate between a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc, betweenChianti and Shiraz. You can identify distinct aromas like pineapple, leather, blackberry, vanilla or dirt. None of these things are actuallyin the wine, but your familiar vocabulary will help you to pinpointand communicate the various aromas that result from the chemistry

of wine making.

At last, SIP the wine. Take a mouthful and hold it there for a bit.Swish and swirl it in your mouth, even suck in a bit of air to helpopen the flavor. Your mother probably wouldn’t like this either, butthat’s how the pros get a true taste of the wine. Now that you’ve got-ten to the fun part, it’s time to think about what you’re experiencing. How does it feel? This is body and texture. Is it light or heavy onyour tongue? Does it feel velvety or tannic? Where is the taste? Is itsweet on the tip of the tongue, bitter at the back, or acidic along thesides of the tongue? The heat of your mouth helps send the wine’saroma to your smell center where you can detect the distinct flavorsof each varietal as well as flavor notes like chocolate, pear or butter.A well balanced wine will combine all of these characteristics in apleasing way, without having one overpower the others. Think ofhow spice enhances the flavor of food, but too much ruins the dish.

Now practice! Take every opportunity to try out new wines. When-ever wines are open taste them, even if it’s a wine you don’t thinkyou’ll enjoy. It’s only a taste and you may get a very pleasant surprise. You’ll definitely gain experience in defining the wines you prefer. Agreat way to experience more wines is by attending tastings at restau-rants, wineries, and your neighborhood wine shop.

Only you can decide if a particular wine is a keeper or not. By tastingsystematically you will be able to define your favorites and tell yourwaiter or your wine merchant exactly what you are looking for in awine. Taste, learn, and enjoy.

Every year, the Atlanta Symphony hosts a party at the empty Decorators’ Show House to thank the designers and theirvendors/sponsors who have taken on the task of transforming the home into a decorative dream. The party is meantto be a casual and a laid back affair since the air is still ripe with demolition dust and most of the work has just startedin the rooms. It is a time for the designers to socialize and collaborate over cocktails and dinner served by the symphonyvolunteers. The mood is light and fun, because the hard part of decorating the home has not yet begun. The designersare all still swimming in their ideas, and in some cases the fabrics and furniture pieces are still being changed or tweaked.

Due to the economy, we have all been pleasantly surprised by how many vendors and sources are coming in at the lastminute with generous donations. Now that the year-end financials and the first quarter projections have been deter-mined, a huge sigh of relief has fallen over the designers and their sponsors. While the economic climate is not ideal,it could be worse and a good home interiors marketer understands the benefit of attaching one’s name or product toa top designer at the ASA Decorators’ Show House. We were thrilled to receive the news last week that BenjaminMoore will be donating the paint for Show House this year, which is another huge financial burden lifted off the shoul-ders of the designers and their contractors.

But back to the fun stuff! The Empty House Party was a huge success, even though I mistakenly sent out incorrectdress code information to all of the designers…twice. I’m sure I thoroughly confused everyone, but luckily no oneshowed up in costume or naked.

Most of the attendees have attended an Empty House Party in the past, and all agreed that this was by far the most at-tended and enjoyed. Thanks to Sheila Richards, the party chair, and the tireless efforts of her committee, there wasplenty of delicious gourmet food to go around (I almost died and went to heaven when I bit into her blue cheese andnut grape balls…simply divine). There was also not an empty glass as everyone toasted the potential success of the de-signers and the Show House. The rooms were charmingly decorated by the committee with paint cans, step ladders, and draped wallpaper. Saw horses were cleverly topped with ply wood to serve as the beverage bars. One generousvolunteer, Ed Brantley, set up a chili bar with his award winning “Texas Ed’s Chili”. I won’t be surprised if Ed receivesseveral phone calls to inquire about how one might obtain the “aggressively” guarded recipe.

The party is intended to go from six to nine in the evening, but the volunteers had to gently steer party goers towardthe doors at ten-thirty. It was a long day of setting up and preparing, and an even longer evening of taking the deco-rations down and packing up; however, the symphony is known for its dedicated volunteers and everything went offwithout a hitch. After a good night’s sleep, I woke up with much enthusiasm about the success of the party. I cansafely say that this was an incredible start to the season ahead, and I am sure the designers and their sponsors wouldsay the same. Stay tuned…next month, the work will have begun in full force, so I am sure I will have many gaffesand triumphs to report.

“Consistency is key! My trainer

Paul helped me stay consistent,

all the way to a 22 pound

weight loss!”

Nancy, Smyrna resident 13 years.

The first day of Spring officially begins on March 20th. As a fitness professional, I officiallymark it as the day when many people have an “uh-oh” moment. As in, “Uh-oh, too manyholiday treats and not enough resolutions kept.” Or, “Uh-oh, I forgot about those pesky tanktops and shorts!” I hope that I can help turn your uh-oh moment into an ah-ha moment. Haveno fear, your trainer is here.

Perhaps you think it is too late. Spring has sprung and you are on the couch. It is never too latemy friends. As I always tell my clients: it’s not about perfection, it’s all about improvement. Youhave time to improve, starting right now. I’m going to give you some easy exercises to target thosetroublesome areas that see the sun. As with any exercise program, consult your physician first. Inaddition, always stretch and warm-up before performing any exercise. I will share with you threeexercises that will help you be spring-ready. You can do these exercises in the comfort of yourliving room. Give them a try during a commercial break or at this very moment.

The Tank Top Exercise

Worried about the back of those arms? Are they not as toned or tight as you would like? Areyou afraid that you will wave to a friend andyour arms will keep waving long after? Hereis a simple exercise you can do to firm up theback of your arms.

Grab a dumbbell or even a canned food. Situpright or stand. Make sure that you are sit-ting or standing upright without archingyour back. Wrap both hands around thedumbbell or canned item. Extend both armsabove your head (Do not drop it on yourhead). Keep your elbows near your ears. Bend your elbows, slowly bring the weight behindyour head and then back up. Repeat this until you feel a slight burn in the back of your arms.

The Short Shorts Exercise.

Are those outer thighs a bit jiggly? Do visions of shorts, skirts, or bathing suits make you cringe? Here is an exercise that will tell those thighs that the jig is up.

Stand behind a sturdy object, such as a chair, with your hands lightly placed on top for balance.

Do not lean forward or back. Make sure thatboth feet are parallel to one another. Lift oneleg to the side while keeping the footflexed/parallel. Lift the leg as high as possible, but no higher than hip height. Bring the legback down and do several repetitions untilyou feel a slight burn in the outer thigh. Dothe same with the other leg.

The Bikini Belly Exercise.

Now guys, please don’t wear a bikini! But more than likely you will be shirtless at the pool.Ladies, perhaps you will not wear a bikini, but you will want to look slimmer in the mid-sectionno matter the swimwear.

Lay on the ground, I suggest a cushy yoga mator something of that nature. Bend your kneesand have your feet planted on the ground.Lightly press your fingertips to the back of yourhead (never clasp your hands or pull your neck).Bring one knee up and bring the opposite elbowas far to the knee as possible (without straining).Set the foot and your head down. Now lift theother knee and bring the opposite elbow as faras you can to that knee. Set the foot and yourhead down. Repeat until you feel a slightburn in your belly.

JUDGING OTHERS IS DAMAGING TO ALL

by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D.

From religious teachings, great literature, and even popular music;

the message of the value of not judging others is asserted.

Judge not, that ye be not judged.

~ Matthew 7:1

Time will change and even reverse many of your present opinions. Refrain, therefore, awhile from setting yourself up as judge of the highest matters.

~ Plato

If a man looks after the faults of others, and is always inclined to be offended, his own passions will grow, and he is far from the destructions of passions.

~ The Dharmapada (a collection of the Buddha’s essential teachings).

Our senses don’t deceive us: our judgment does.

~ Goethe

I know I’m not perfectAnd I don’t live to beBut before you start pointing fingersMake sure your hands are clean

~ Bob Marley

However, human nature seems to be determined to criticize and judge each other – to some degree –on many different parameters. Personal appearance, including weight and attractiveness; intelligenceand education; individual values, beliefs, and spiritual practices; occupations and professional success;and wealth are all arenas inviting negative judgments of others. It appears that the task of acceptingpeople as they are is just incredibly difficult. Our culture is conflict-ridden and often there is anattitude focused on “one-up man ship” or winning. As we live we slowly develop biases or pre-con-ceived notions about people with whom we interact.

When criticism and judgment are negative it can lead to great hurt, and damage. People react to crit-icism and judgment in different ways. Some become fearful, and close down emotionally to protect. Some develop feelings of inadequacy; while others become angry, and strike others with the venom ofjudgment and rejection. Everyone as some fear of being judged rejected or abandoned. No one reallylikes to be judged and so eliminating this from our own actions will improve your life and relationships.

Living a life filled with judgments and criticisms of others are as hurtful to oneself as they are to thetarget of judgment. Those who judge others often also judge themselves in very painful and damagingways. People who feel good about themselves can more easily see the good in others. Self-acceptanceand practicing kindness towards the self encourages tolerance. It is known that acceptance of the selfand others is important is overall mental health and general happiness.

We analyze and make decisions about living based on individual values and beliefs that are developedthrough learning and personal experience. Having confidence and clarity about values and decisionsis not only natural, it is valuable and important - – imposing those convictions on others betrays anattitude of arrogance. Assigning a moral code to another disrespects alternative perspectives. As soonas you judge someone you are saying that you are better or worse than that person.

There is a difference between being clear and confident of personal values for ourselves and imposingthose onto others. It is important to delineate between making judgments based on belief or valuesystems which makes them opinions – and when we are actually stating fact. Most of the time, judg-ments come from a place of opinion. We can still have an opinion, but not condemn others for havinga different opinion. Everyone sees things differently and when opinions are expressed in a way thatdemands agreement, and is judgmental; there is a lack of respect of alternative views. While we canverbalize and share opinion – even forcefully – it is important to acknowledge that others can believedifferently.

Being judgmental and critical becomes habit over time. Finding ways to be loving and accepting canreplace old ways and become a new habit. If we decide to be as non-judgmental as possible aboutpeople then we can really transform our personality. It is a difficult process but making sincere attemptsto do so is very powerful.

“Experience Makes the Difference”

As a physician assistant who sees patients in primary care, I’m often asked ques-tions such as, “Why am I on so much medicine?” or “What can I do to get offsome of these prescription drugs?” Many patients are frustrated with having totake multiple medications for conditions such as high blood pressure, high cho-lesterol, and diabetes. Although swallowing a pill is easy and may seem like aquick solution, many medications come with unwanted side effects and can beexpensive. The last thing people want to spend their hard earned money on ismedicine, especially in this economy.

One reason for the extraordinary prevalence and cost of prescription medicationsis that we, as medical providers, are seeing more and more patients with danger-ous chronic conditions that need treatment. In the last 10 years, the rate of obe-sity in the U.S. has reached a critical level, leading to a greater occurrence ofdiseases such as diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Pharmaceuticalcompanies have kept up with this trend by supplying medications to help preventand treat these problems. However, there exists another opportunity that may,for some, decrease the need for medications to treat certain chronic conditions-diet and exercise.

We’ve all heard this buzz phrase, “diet and exercise” over and over. The recom-mendation has remained the same over the years - maintaining a healthy weight, along with regular exercise, is universally accepted as a mainstay of disease pre-vention. However, many people find the concept of a diet and exercise planoverwhelming, especially for working parents with busy families. Crash dietscertainly are unappealing and impractical to most. And 30 minutes of daily ex-ercise can quickly turn into an hour and a half when you begin to factor in thetime it takes to get to your gym, change clothes, do your routine, then showeror clean up afterwards to return to the rest of your day. Most of us don’t havethat kind of time. No wonder many well-intentioned people abandon the ideaand end up disregarding this basic yet important recommendation.

Patients often ask, “How can I integrate diet and exercise into my daily routinewithout turning my life upside down?” Fortunately, there are many things youcan do to get more physical activity and healthier eating habits without makingdrastic changes. For example, drinking a glass of water before a meal or eatingoff a smaller plate can help you decrease your portion sizes and cut calories.Sneak exercise into your day by doing sit ups while watching your must-see TVshow, or lift hand weights periodically when working at a desk. The educationalwebsite www.smallstep.gov offers over one hundred tips on easy ways to exercise, cook, eat, and drink which can facilitate healthy habits. The website also offersan interactive tool to set goals for individuals, and offers further resources aboutobesity, teen health, and diet planning.

Currently in the United States, two out of three adults are overweight or obese. Many of these people also pay hundreds of dollars each month for prescriptiondrugs to maintain blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugars. By adoptinghealthier lifestyle habits to achieve a normal body weight, it may be possible tosubstantially reduce the amount of medications that are needed for disease man-

agement and prevention. Increasing exercise andmaking healthier diet choices could slim yourwaistline, and also fatten your wallet!

Last month I wrote about Patagonia,on the Argentine sideof the Andes. This month we cross over this South Amer-ican mountain range to the Chilean side.

One of the best and wildest journeys in the world is a landcrossing from El Calefate, Argentina to the border atCerro Castillo, Chile. Departing from the small town inArgentina, one must drive southwest across the wide openand very flat ranges of this area of Patagonia. It seems likea no man’s land as you travel down the famed Route 40(almost as famous as the US Rt. 66). The only differenceis that Rt. 66 was known for all its tourist attractions alongthe way, but Argentine Rt. 40 is known for its wild andwooly ride through the nothingness you might have seenin the movie, “Motorcycle Diaries”, the story of Che Gue-vara. In life as in the movie, the climate and the road bedare perhaps your worst enemies.

Arriving in the small post of Cerro Castillo a quick stopat the border crossing, puts you on the Chilean side ofPatagonia. When I first did this crossing years ago, therewas no outpost or town. It was simply a wooden gatewith a shack alongside. You had to plan your trip to bethere at the exact hour when the customs official was

there, otherwise you would have to camp out for the night or until he re-appeared.

Now it is an easy crossing; from the flat plains of Argentina, up and over the Andes, to the Torresdel Paine National Park on the Chilean side. There are 5 official border crossings in Patagonia butthe crossing at Cerro Castillo is the most spectacular. As you crest the pass into Chile, and headinto the wind coming up the pass, in the distance you can see the three spires of the famed Torres(towers in Spanish). This is the focal point of this area of Chilean Patagonia.

Much has been written about the amazing hotel called Salto Chico or Explora. It sits at the bottoomof the Paine Mastiff on the shores of Lake Pehoe. Explora Patagonia shares some fantastic viewsof these towers which is why the entire hotel has large windows everywhere. The veiw is so mes-merizing that even the bathrooms in the guestrooms have windows so that if you are shaving ortaking a bath, you can view the ever changing specter of the towers.

The hikes in this park are equally wonderful. You can walk along a black stone beach at Lago Greyas small icebergs from the Grey Glacier float by. You can ride horseback through fields filled withGuanucos (relatives of Llamas), or hike to Lake Sarmiento where calcium boulders make strangeformations only weighing a few pounds. You can also climb the Torres if you are so inclined.

Outside the park, there are other things to do and other less expensive places to stay. There aremany hosterias (hostels) in the park and out, as well as, camping areas for the very hardy. In PuertoNatales there is boating and kayaking, however on this the windy western side of the Andes, thereis always a good chop on most of the lakes in this area.

It is so windy, there is no other way to reach the Park except by a 5 hour car ride to Punta Arenaswhere Lan Airlines flys back to Santiago and home to the states. The weather changes very quickly,as Chile is the narrowest longest country in the world . Never greater than 150 miles across, theweather blows in from the Pacific Ocean across this small expanse making the Chilean side ofPatagona a real adventure whatever you decide to do.

Mommy MomentsParent/Teacher Conferences: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives

by Shasta Clark

Shasta Clark, a former writer for CNN Headline News is a freelance journalist who writes about her most

challenging job yet, motherhood. You may contact her at [email protected].

Was it just me, or were you too in shock the first time your child’s preschool invited you to aparent/teacher conference?

For some reason, I immediately transformed from a confident 32-year-old woman into an awkward8-year-old girl who was being called into the principal’s office and wasn’t sure why. As immature asthis sounds, I couldn’t believe I was the parent in this conference. I wondered, “What will I talk tothe teacher about for 30 minutes? My son is 3-years-old and goes to school 2 ½ hours a week. Whatcould she possibly have to say to me?”

Just as I had hoped, she told me that my son was a bright, pleasant boy. Her one suggestion: I shouldlet him use child-safe scissors at home; he cuts a little crooked.

“Phew, that was easy!” But that was last year. This year, it’s a whole new ball game, and I can’t waitto talk to his teacher. Apparently, there is a big difference between 3-year-old preschool and 4-year-old preschool, and I want to hear all about it.

You see, I’ve been comparing notes with other preschool moms about what our children say abouttheir class. It’s not the education that intrigues us; it’s the social interaction. As the other moms tell

it, the 4-year-old preschool class has asmuch drama as an episode of “Days ofOur Lives”.

There’s the class Casanova, whommakes all the girls giggle and swoon.

There’s the class sweetheart, whomboys and girls alike love to love. Infact, two girls love the sweetheart somuch that they argued over whowould sit next to her at snack time. They couldn’t agree so they didn’t talkto each other for two days. Who knew

that a 4-year-old could hold a grudge??? The sweetheart, living up to her name, is so sweet that shedidn’t realize people were fighting over her.

There’s the class bully. I hate to label a 4-year-old, but he randomly hits other children and says, “Idon’t like you.”

There’s the class beauty queen, whom picks out her own clothes every morning based on what shethinks the boys in the class will like. Yep, I’m talking about a 4-year-old.

There’s the class politician, whom is so talkative and personable, you’d swear he’d kiss babies if aTV camera were on him.

There’s the class potty mouth, whom the teacher tells, “that kind of language belongs in the trash, not in this classroom.”

There’s the class artist. My sneaking suspicion tells me I should get his autograph now because it’llbe worth more than my Roth-IRA someday.

And there’s the class All-American kid, whom is so kind that youwant your child to be friends with him.

Every mom is eager to find out where her child fits in this cast ofcharacters. I hope my son is oblivious to the drama and gets thesame report as last year, “He’s a bright, pleasant boy who cuts alittle crooked.”

Big tonsils are a common finding in chil-dren. Parents often ask their pediatricianif their child’s tonsils need to be removed. Many of them remember that a tonsillec-tomy, the surgical removal of the tonsilswas commonly done when they were chil-dren. Today, surgery is reserved for pa-tients who meet specific criteria. Thisarticle will review the tonsils and give par-ents a guideline for tonsillectomy.

The tonsils are tissue masses found onboth sides of the throat. While they arenot necessary for life, they do serve a pur-pose. As part of the lymphatic system, they produce antibodies to help fight in-fection. Their sticky surface can trap bac-teria and viruses before they go down thethroat. In most people tonsils shrinks up

as the person ages. However, preschool and elementary aged children tend to have large tonsils. This is probably due to the fact that they get more upper respiratory infections than adults.

Tonsillitis is the condition in which the tonsils become red and swollen. Sometimes they will havea white coating. Swallowing and talking may be painful but not all children complain. Fever andswollen glands under the lower jaw bones may also be present. Most tonsillitis is caused from viralupper respiratory infections. There is no treatment for a viral infection other than supportive care. While viral tonsillitis can be severe, it usually resolves without complications. Rarely, the infectedtonsil forms an abscess that requires more aggressive medical intervention.

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the tonsils. The only way to differentiate viral tonsillitisfrom a strep infection is to do a throat swab. The rapid strep test takes only five minutes and

is ninety percent accurate. Most doctors will do a throat culture if the rapid strep test is negative. The culture may take up to forty eight hours to grow. If tonsillitis is caused by a strep infection(group A Streptococcus), antibiotics are needed. Failure to treat a strep infection could lead toserious complications.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has put together guidelines for tonsillectomy. Under thefollowing conditions, the doctor may send your child to an otolaryngologist, also known as anear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon:

• Obstructive sleep apnea

• Snoring that fails to improve with medical treatment

• Large tonsils that cause difficulty with normal breathing during the day

• Trouble swallowing solid foods

• An abscess on the tonsil

• An excessive number of sore throats (more than 5 or 6 in a twelve month period)

• Chronically tender, swollen lymph nodes below the lower jaw (more than 6 months)

If surgery in needed, it is commonly done as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Followingsurgery, overnight hospital observation is recommended for children under three and those withchronic medical problems such as Down syndrome or seizure disorder. The recovery time istypically seven to ten days. The most frequent complication is bleeding. If this occurs, thechild may have to go back to surgery. These days, many surgeons will do a variation of traditionaltonsillectomy in which a small layer of tonsil tissue is left behind to protect the throat muscles.Advantages include reduced pain, less risk of bleeding and faster recovery time. There is a smallchance the tonsils will grow back.

If your child has large tonsils, this may be normal. However, if you think there is an infectionor if your child’s tonsils are causing a problem, see a doctor. Medical treatment or the surgicalremoval of the tonsils may be necessary.

Is a Pet Hamster Right for You? by Liannne McLeod, DVM

Hamsters are popular pets, and for good reason. They are easy to care for, usually bond wellwith their owners, and on top of everything else, they are very cute! Learn about choosing apet hamster, pet hamster care, and providing all the necessities for your ham-ster in this handy hamster care guide.

Is a Pet Hamster Right for You?

Hamsters make good pets, but they are not the right choicefor everyone. Learn about the pros and cons of hamsteras pets before deciding if a hamster will be the right petfor you. You will also need to consider whether you wanta larger Syrian hamster (always keep one to a cage),smaller dwarf hamsters (can be kept together), or eventhe less common but still lovely Chinese hamster.

Choose a Healthy Hamster

Avoid taking home a hamster that shows common signs andsymptoms of illness, stress, or other problems. While some problems can be hidden, anybodycan do a quick check for some common signs of illness or other problems. While there are noguarantees, avoiding hamsters with obvious signs of problems gives you have the best chanceof taking home a healthy hamster. Since many diseases are contagious, it is safest to also avoidhamsters with cage mates that seem ill. As an added bonus, you can also get clues about a ham-ster’s temperament while doing a quick health check.

Choosing a Hamster Cage and Supplies

Having a cage all set up and waiting for your hamster is a good way to smooth your hamsters’transition to his or her new home. There are a huge variety of cage styles and sized out there, and which one to choose can be confusing. My best advice: don’t be fooled by the “coolness”of the cage, and make sure you choose one that is appropriate for the size of hamster you arechoosing as well as one that is easy to clean. Also make sure you have cage accessories such asbedding, an exercise wheel, and a cozy sleep hut picked out.

Feeding Your Hamster Times

There are also a lot of choices when it comes to hamster food, and not all are created equal. You main choice will be between a pellet diet and a loose mix diet, and each has pros and cons.Your store-bought hamster diet can also be supplemented with a variety of healthy human foodand treats.

Handling Your Hamster

Hamsters that haven’t been handled may not be happy about being picked up and may try tobite you. It’s important to remember hamsters that bite are not mean — they are scared anddefending themselves the best way they know how. It may take some patience (and possiblesome treats) to win your hamster’s trust.

Toys for Hamsters

Hamsters need to be able to chew, and they need to be able to exercise. Hamsters really weremade to run, so a running wheel is a must. A hamster wheel must be large enough (many ham-ster wheels are more appropriate for dwarf hamsters than Syrian hamsters), safe (no wire wheels, please), and for your sanity, quiet. For chewing, a variety of wood structures and toys will helpkeep your hamster’s teeth in shape. Hamsters also tend to like play tubes and tunnels and thingsthey can climb on.
