President’s Letter

Jeremy MoorePresident

Happy New Year SkyHawk family!

As we embark on 2018, we continue to celebrate our 25th year of making a difference in the Omaha community

We kicked off the first semester with the largest enrollment in school history, and the highest attended and fundraised Angel Flight We celebrated state championships in volleyball and boys cross country, and we were state runners-up in girls cross country and football Academically, we saw the math team win state in the probe competition and in quiz bowl Two students were named National Merit semifinalists

One of the last impressions of 2017 was our school-wide Advent drive The fierce competitive spirit that is the hallmark of our SkyHawks definitely came out in an impactful way More than 2,000 nonperishable food items, 3,500 diapers, dozens of winter coats, hats and gloves, and more than $1,100 worth of new toys and personal care items were collected by Skutt Catholic homerooms “Drive” is a fitting term, as I believe all SkyHawks have a drive to MAKE A DIFFERENCE daily Beginning in January, we will be conducting a comprehensive survey of the entire school community to study the feasibility for a capital campaign This planning study will enable us to determine potential support for proposed projects as we look to improve and expand our campus to meet the demand for quality, Catholic education If we, as a community, choose to move forward, the planning study will also provide information to identify prospective campaign leaders and to establish a realistic campaign goal Be on the lookout for a letter providing additional details about the prospective campaign goals and information about how to participate in the study I value your feedback, and your insights will help plan for the future of Skutt Catholic The Steier Group, our development firm, will compile this information and present it to Skutt Catholic leaders At that time, we will make an informed decision on how to move forward This process is extremely important, and will form and impact the future of our school I encourage each member of our community to participate I appreciate your support and generosity with our advancement efforts These initiatives allow our exceptional staff to deliver the best Catholic education possible to our students Please review the great accomplishments the school has achieved during the past few months in this issue, and celebrate the many milestones our alumni have achieved as well I welcome everyone to attend the many events we have planned this semester, and help us continue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the school, “Making a Difference since 1993”

God’s blessings always, and Go SkyHawks!

Chairman’s Letter

Skutt Catholic – 25 years of forming and educating young men and women to become Christian leaders who empower others, promote justice, and initiate change The Skyhawk community is certainly out in the world MAKING A DIFFERENCE every day, living our school’s mission

It is not easy to live up to our mission statement on a daily basis; however, it is very fulfilling to be part of a community that is accomplishing so much We are blessed with great teaching staff and administrators who serve as fantastic role models for our students Stop by the school any time and you can get a great sense of why Skutt Catholic students love being at school – they are being challenged every day to MAKE A DIFFERENCE and to do so in their own unique way – whether in the classroom, in an activity or in the community

Skutt Catholic is also very fortunate to have 25 years of support from its parents and the community While most are not alumni, the Skyhawk experience truly has its origin in our founding fathers, parents and community supporters who have helped to shape Skutt Catholic into what it is today Our student’s education and development toward becoming Christian leaders is directly dependent upon such support and guidance During the Open House, new families get to experience our sense of community and commitment; this feeling makes others want to join the SkyHawk family

I believe Skutt Catholic’s success, in the past and in the future, is directly dependent upon the support of our entire community We are also blessed with so many contributors who provide their support in so many different ways Whether it be on the board of directors or a committee, or participating in a parent group, or financially supporting the school, or even just participating at school activities, a lot of incredible people have adopted our motto and are selflessly part of MAKING A DIFFERENCE in the lives of our students This selfless community support is what makes Skutt Catholic great for students – and for the entire SkyHawk family

Thank you for being part of our strong Skutt Catholic community and contributing to the development of our school We are counting on your thoughts, questions, prayers and contributions as we continue to develop our vision and plans for the Skutt Catholic experience to continue for the next 25 years and beyond Skutt Catholic is relying on each of us to continue living our mission to MAKE A DIFFERENCE

God Bless!

Make a difference in the life of every Skutt Catholic student From supporting financial aid to ensuring we offer the best in college preparatory classes and activities, your gift to the SkyHawk Appeal helps us meet our annual operating expenses while keeping our tuition as low as possible It allows us to close the near $2,000 gap between tuition charged and our actual cost to educate a student We have no intent to rest on the successes achieved thus far With your support Skutt Catholic will continue to maintain both strong enrollment and program offerings in spite of the regional and national trends toward the contrary

Your participation in the SkyHawk Appeal, at any level, is deeply valued and appreciated Each gift contributes to our financial stability Your gift of $10, $25, $250, $2,500, or more, helps to further our mission of educating young men and women to become Christian leaders who empower others, promote justice, and initiate change

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT DAY“ The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others!” – Mahatma Ghandi

Mr Bart Zavaletta’s homeroom spent more than four hours stuffing bags and packing boxes for the Backpack Program co-sponsored by Woodhouse Auto group and the Food Bank for the Heartland The group helped with close to 600 meals in that timespan L to R - Katie Belfiore, Gabrielle Banaag, Jacalyn Adams, Jake Archer, Ethan Baker & John Beaudoin (front), Amanda Bader,Ellie Bassett, Kyle Bailey, Mr Zav, Austin Ash, Ben Altman, Jared Baumert, & Amelia McConnell

On Wednesday, October 4, Skutt Catholic students volunteered at 44 different sites within the Omaha area, including Papillion, Bellevue, Elkhorn, and Council Bluffs A long-standing SkyHawk tradition, the school’s Community Involvement Day started in 1995, just a few years after the school opened in 1993

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” was the call to action voiced in the early morning announcements, before the homeroom classes dispersed to their assigned locations

This year, Skutt Catholic’s more than 770 students, along with faculty, staff and parent volunteers, lived the school’s motto and “made a difference” at homeless shelters, retirement centers, food pantries, schools, agencies that serve people with disabilities, and donation centers

Following the event, each homeroom creates an action plan to further help the site they visited Examples include donation drives, sending Christmas cards and treats, or returning to visit In the past, students have also returned to visit or volunteer on their own Some eventually get a job with the non-profit organization

2018 National Merit Scholar SemifinalistsSeniors Hope Stratman and Noah Wasserberger have been named National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists Approximately 16,000 academically talented high school seniors earned this opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, but only about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title

NMSC is a not-for-profit organization established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, with the goal of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence

SkyHawks Gone M.A.D. is an award given each month to a student who exemplifies, by their words and deeds, what it means to be a true SkyHawk M A D stands for our school motto “Make a Difference ” Students are nominated by faculty, other students, and the community

Our SkyHawks Gone M.A.D. recipients for the fall semester along with quotes from their nominations are shared here

“Cal is a great person to have in class! He works very hard at his studies and is always willing to look at all sides of an issue He has great chemistry with all of his classmates and is always prepared for any topic of discussion that we have He is a great leader and great example of what it is to be a SkyHawk ”

“I am so happy to have Cal in class this year! His positivity has a tremendous impact on the class and he clearly wants to help everyone in the class succeed He gets excited when someone else has a “breakthrough” moment or shines in class and he is always the first one to congratulate that student Cal is a gifted student himself, but continues to work diligently to improve and help push the class forward He is friendly, courteous, and someone who aims to improve the lives of those around him ”

“In Play Direction, Cal chose to cast a student who hasn’t had the easiest time here at Skutt He cast this student and embraced them as a human being and showed that they have talent and can do incredible things I have seen the confidence in this student soar since then and I think a lot of it has to do with the leadership that Cal has shown ”

“It has been great having Emma in class this year! She is a conscientious student who works hard and is eager to contribute to class discussions in order to help others understand the material, as well Emma always enters the classroom with a positive attitude and is friendly with everyone in the class She seems to be friends with everyone! I love having students like Emma in my classes ”

“Emma has contributed significantly to the Skutt Catholic soccer team and the state championships that the team has won the last two years Emma is a very bright young lady She excelled in honors chemistry and chose to take AP chemistry her junior year At the start of that year, Emma approached me about starting a club at Skutt Catholic for students interested in a career in health care Emma had done research to find a nationally recognized club, HOSA, and suggested that Skutt Catholic start HOSA (health care occupation students of America) Emma was one of the leaders of HOSA last year and again this year, serving as president Emma is always willing to help out in any way for HOSA She is always positive She participates in as many HOSA activities as possible Emma Slattery and her pursuit of starting HOSA at Skutt Catholic has definitely made a difference for many of our students as well as me ”

“Ryan is a self-motivated young man who is driven to learn My job would be effortless if I had a classroom full of students like him He is respectful and kind to his peers He is an outstanding role model and truly deserving of this award ”

“He is a smart, caring, innovative, thoughtful, and conscientious student Even when it is apparent that he grasps new information right away, he continues to push himself to “take it to the next level,” so to speak It’s easy to see why he is liked by so many classmates; he is always an active participant, eager to help those who need assistance, and willing to share his ideas during the class period He is the cream of the crop at Skutt Catholic! I have thoroughly enjoyed having him in class this year!”

“Ryan has been a model student in the music program He shows up prepared and ready to work on material He also demonstrates leadership skills by leading sectionals and small ensembles His enthusiasm for music and learning has allowed him to excel in class and I have seem this enthusiasm extend to other classes It has been a joy to work with him this year and I look forward to seeing how the upcoming year progresses ”

A record number of Skutt Catholic students (770) started the school year with a new SkyHawk Student Center The collaborative learning space replaced the media center and is the hub for student study halls, before and after school meetings as well as a gathering place

Dedicated on August 8, the new space was based on a concept our engineering team submitted for a Peter Kiewit Institute competition Their dream became a reality for future generations of SkyHawks through the generosity of many donors at the 2016 Angel Flight

Throughout Skutt Catholic’s 25-year history the Skutt family has generously supported the school Jeanne always made sure to purchase a table at our annual Angel Flight dinner-auction In fact, just weeks before she passed, she made a contribution to the event

Jeanne Skutt was a woman of influence She had a keen sense of humor and an engaging smile She was our link between the past and the present -- always proud that our high school carried the Skutt family name We are grateful for her life and honored that Jeanne’s memorial designations included V J and Angela Skutt Catholic High School
