The Junior League of Lufkin welcomes all women who are committed to volunteerism. The League educates and challenges its members to be effective community leaders, advocates, and individuals. Trained volunteers and collaborators will address and respond to community needs with positive solutions. The League focus is to educate and empower individuals, primarily children, by providing the resources and tools that will address all aspects of their well being.

Leadership Lines

Many of you may be surprised to know that I used to describe myself as shy. In fact, it wasn’t until after I graduated from

college and started teaching that I began to come out of my shell. I attribute my cracked shell to individuals in my life that set an example as a leader and believed in my ability to be a good leader. When I was growing up, I had a desire to be somewhat of a leader as long as it was “safe.” For example, in drill team I wanted to be an officer but did not want to try-out. You see, that could have led to failure so I settled on being a Sergeant-a social position that did not require try-outs. I was comfortable trying out for a part in the church musical but did not audition for a singing part because of the fear of getting off key. However, little by little, those who pushed me out of my comfort zone chipped away the shyness and fear. The shy Emily still comes out on occasion and I still struggle with certain things. One thing that I struggle with is meeting new people. A person I met several years ago and is now a great friend told me that when she first met me she thought I was a snob but I am now one of the craziest people she knows. She says she mistook my shyness as being snobby. I have come a long way though and look at me now! My questions for you are: “Do you have a desire to be a leader in JLL? Is your comfort zone keeping you from being a leader?” According to Gregory P. Smith (www.http://m.businessknowhow.com/growth/mythology.htm), the five most common leadership myths are: “Myth 1- Leadership is a rare ability only given to a few.” Leaders are made and not necessarily born that way. I am proof positive. Leadership takes time, training, and trial and error. Good leaders have

the ability to care about others, have a sense of purpose regarding their mission, and provide a path to those they lead. “Myth 2- Leaders are charismatic.” Again, take a look back on my story. I still struggle with issues of being a leader. Your passion, your cause and your mission should make you charismatic, not the other way around. “Myth 3-The person with the title, most rank or the highest position is the leader.” This means you don’t have to be the President of JLL to make something happen. You can be a leader within your placement. You can be a leader by being a Chair of a fundraiser or community project. You can be a leader in whatever role you play in the League. “Myth 4-Effective leadership is based on control, coercion, and manipulation.” Leadership is about the future not the past. A good leader helps people become better than they are or think they are. A good leader creates an environment that attracts, keeps, and motivates the members of our organization. “Myth 5-Good leaders have more education than other people.” Education, such as a high school diploma, college degree, or Ph.D., does not make you a good leader. Education of JLL and your experience within the League can enhance your League responsibilities and your passion. By doing so, you learn how to balance the needs of the mission versus the needs of the individual. So, are you selling yourself short? Do you think you lack the attributes to be a leader? Well, you may want to take a step out of the box and think again! I believe in you!! Do you?

Susan Harris does things BIG. If you’ve ever served with her on a committee, you know she can’t just be an ordinary committee member. She likes to run stuff and she does it well. Susan worked on every detail of JLL’s signature project to ensure that the Back to School Bonanza was a huge success and with a double placement this year, Susan is also giving leadership to the 2012-2013 Provisional Class. This busy mom and middle school teacher has also been a major player for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for years. A friend says, “Susan truly has a servant’s heart; she is one of the most giving ladies I know. She is raising her children to be volunteers, and to me, that speaks volumes to her character.” Thank you, Susan Harris, for your dedication to our community.

Erica Callaham is new to JLL and to the area, but she’s already made a big impact. As a mom to 2 young children, Erica started a playgroup at her church, helped to develop and lead the English as a Second Language program at The Mosaic Center, and has gone above and beyond her placement this year by helping at

more than the expected number of schools for Vision Screening. A friend describes her by saying, “Erica meets needs beyond what is expected and welcomes everyone with a smile and calm spirit.” Erica Callaham is certainly well-deserving of Volunteer of the Month.

Sprint Into Spring Fun Run

The Fun Run committee is busy planning for our 2nd Annual Sprint into Spring Fun Run! The date is set for Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Crown Colony Country Club. We will continue our kids’ run and 5K race

and we plan on adding a 10K route for some of our longer distance runners. Children ages 4 - 12 years of age will be able to register for the kids’ run. Ages for the 5K and 10K races range in age from 10 years to 80 plus! If you are not a runner, do not fear! We welcome walkers! This will be a “chip-timed” event in which we will be using a timing device attached to your running bib number that will clock the exact time it takes you to run the 6.2 mile or 3.1 mile race. Awards will be presented to the first male and first female to cross the finish line for the 10K, 5K and kids’ race. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division. Registration rates are $20.00 for the kids’ race, $30.00 for the 5K and $40.00 for the 10K race. If you register the morning of the event, the cost will increase by $5.00 for each race. Registration begins November 15, 2012 online at www.onestoprace.com. Please go to www.facebook.com/JLLFunRun and “Like” the page. The name of our page is also called JLL Sprint into Spring 5K, 10K and Kids Fun Run. Community Projects Updates

I am so excited to be chair of our Middle School Volunteer Program this year! We have an amazing group of 20+ middle school students from Lufkin, Hudson, Central, and Huntington. At the end of September, we held a meeting for our new volunteers to sign up for different volunteer opportunities to be held throughout the 2012-

2013 school year. To our surprise most of the middle school volunteers wanted to sign up for every event! The students were so eager to lend a helping hand and start making a difference in their community! We have several events scheduled for this year. In October, we volunteered at the Pumpkin Party at the Museum of East Texas and hosted a booth at Zoo Boo. In November we are stuffing stockings for soldiers at the American Legion. In December, we will be at the East Texas Forestry Museum helping with the Santa Claus Express pancake breakfast. In the spring of 2013 the volunteers will be helping with our very own Sprint into Spring Fun Run and also with the Lufkin Relay for Life event. I have three great team members on my committee: Jean Hester, Mallory Muhlbach, and Melissa Huggins. They have been willing to do whatever it takes to make sure we have a successful year! We all feel so blessed to be working with this wonderful group of young leaders!

Wow! Lots changed for Family Fun Night this year! After much discussion, the name was changed

from Family Fun Nights to Parent Academy. We did this so that families would know that this was not going to be the same Family Fun

Night we conducted a few years ago at Herty Primary. The next change was that we are staying at one local elementary school, Herty Primary, as opposed to going to several schools around the county. The purpose of this was to get to know the families and make a larger impact at one school instead of swooping in for one night at several schools and not getting to know the families as well. Third, we made the number of people attending a smaller group to allow for more relationships to build. We had 25 people attend (10 parents and 15 kids) our first Parent Academy and that was a great number to get the message of Making Learning Fun to the families. After a dinner of pizza, fruit, cookies, and lemonade, the parents gathered for a presentation on how to make learning fun and how kids learn differently, with a group discussion followed by the parents exchanging ideas of how they make learning fun for their kids. The kids had a fantastic time playing in the gym and on the playground while the parents learned! Some of the ideas that the parents discussed to make learning fun was playing color, letter or number bingo; writing spelling words and math problems in shaving cream; acting out a story as a family; drawing the parts of a story in order to comprehend what the story is all about; using cheerios (m&ms, skittles, fruit loops, etc.) to practice adding and subtracting and “writing” in the sky. The feedback we received was very positive and families are looking forward to our future Parent Academy events. The next Parent Academy will be Monday, January 14th at Herty Primary and the topic will be Conscious Discipline. The final Parent Academy will be on Monday, April 15th at Herty

Primary with Healthy Eating as the topic. The Parent Academy committee did an outstanding job on preparing for the night, setting up for the families and working with the families! We’ve had a great start and I am certain that Parent Academy will grow from year to year and make the impact on the community.

Provisional Update

It’s hard to believe Christmas is around the corner, but I am happy to say The Provisional Class of 2012-2013 has

been busy having fun! We jumped into the summer ready to volunteer. Many of us had a wonderful chance to visit Camp Get Fit and actually volunteer at Back to School Bonanza. It was great to get a sneak peak

into what the Junior League of Lufkin is all about! Our provisional group really got to know each other at the ROPES course in October. We laughed. We fell. We cheered. We screamed. At the end of the day we became friends! It was a great experience for all of us, whether we climbed or kept our feet firmly on the ground. We also were able to “sport” our Provisional Class shirts at our last November JLL meeting! Our Provisional class has had numerous community service ideas. We started our 1st annual Provisional Class School Uniform Drive, which we will be continuing throughout the year. We have also planned our “Simply Done” project for the spring. We will be donating clothes to women in need during tough times and dealing with traumatic personal events. Our future looks bright! We have Christmas parties, the Sustainer’s Tea, Spring Market, FUN RUN and more to come! Oh, and let’s not forget that ROAST we have already started planning! We are all very excited about the year ahead and are extremely honored to be a part of such a great, hardworking group of women.

Focus on the Community

The Janelle Grum Family Crisis Center of East Texas (Women’s Shelter of East Texas, Inc.) is a non-profit organization

incorporated to enhance the safety of women, children, and men by providing crisis intervention and advocacy services to reduce and prevent the occurrence of family violence and sexual assault through education and community awareness. Our agency provides services that are vital for survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault to establish a safe and se-cure life free from abuse. Services include a 24-hour emergency hotline, emergency shelter, transportation, crisis intervention, case management, legal advocacy, child advocacy, sexual assault advo-cacy, advocacy for employment and housing, peer support groups, individual and family counseling, therapy groups, emergency fi-nancial assistance, and transitional housing. Our agency’s focus is “Empowerment-Based Advocacy.” Other services the Family Crisis Center provides include primary prevention and community educa-tion. The Junior League of Lufkin awarded our agency funding for supplies and materials for peer support groups and therapy groups for adults and children, emergency financial assistance for items such as bus tickets and driver’s licenses, and emergency assistance for things like clothing and hygiene items for children. To date, some of the funding has been utilized for birth certificates for three clients, diapers, and children’s socks. A large portion of the funding has been used for therapy and support group materials, including a therapy tent, supplies for chil-dren’s support groups and recreation groups, and therapy toys for Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). This therapy model is designed specifically to work with victims of family violence and sexual assault, and help survivors heal from trauma and abuse. The PCIT model is designed to help the adult victim and their children to re-establish the parent-child bond through play and healthy limit setting, after trauma has occurred. The counseling program also provides therapy to the non-offending family members. Our agency’s Counselor has witnessed several “break-throughs” with her child clients since utilizing the materials provided through JLL funds, especially the therapy tent. One seven-year-old girl was in therapy with our Counselor and was upset that her parents were separating again. She asked if she could sit in the tent to cry, and that is where she experienced her first emotional healing break-through while finding comfort and security in the tent. Another child client asked the Counselor if they could get in the tent to talk. The client participated in play-therapy in the tent and disclosed to the Coun-selor feelings about her father, who was the perpetrator of abuse. The missions of the Family Crisis Center and Junior League of Lufkin are parallel. We are both in the business of empowering others, especially women. Our agency is incredibly grateful for the funding provided through the Junior League of Lufkin. These ad-ditional resources allow our agency to more adequately assist those that we provide services to. The Family Crisis Center looks forward to a continued partnership with the Junior League of Lufkin.

1. I own a women’s clothing and accessory boutique located in downtown Lufkin. I graduated from Lufkin High School and Texas A&M. I don’t like for my food to touch and I wanted to be Reba McIntire when I was a little girl. I bet you didn’t know that my hidden talent is being a Professional Wedding Dancer!

2. I am mom to Mallory and Patrick and I teach 6th grade social studies at LMS. I graduated from Silsbee High School and SFA. I can laugh or find the humor in any situation. I have a bad habit of correcting people’s grammar. I bet you wouldn’t believe I wanted to be a brain surgeon when I was a little girl.

3. I am the Executive Director of Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau and most recently the Artistic Director at The Pines Theatre. I graduated from LHS and TCU with a degree in Speech Language Pathology. I love to cook and sit by the pond with a glass of wine with my husband Brent. I bet you didn’t know that I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a little girl and even went to space camp twice!

4. I am a Financial Services Specialist at Regions Bank. I graduated from Lufkin High School and graduated from both Angelina College and Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration. I consider myself organized and great with planning and organization, but please never ask me to help with decorating. I bet you didn’t know that I wanted to be a treasure hunter when I was a little girl!

5. I am wife to J.J. and mom to 2 boys, Jacob and Jackson. I am the head of the English Department at LHS and teach English IV AP. I can proofread anything…and I LOVE it! I also LOVE to diagram!! I graduated from West Orange-Stark High School and SWT with a BA Communications. My favorite League placement was Assistant Advisory – selecting scholarship recipients. I would love to be a part of a wine club!

6. I am wife to Brad and mom to Claire. I am a home IV infusion nurse for Agape Home Care. I graduated from Lufkin High School and both AC and SFA with a degree in nursing. I love to vacation at the beach or Disney World. I’m an energetic creative person and I’m good with technology, but please don’t ask me to help with organizing food or catering for parties…I’m terrible at it. I bet you didn’t know that I can walk on top of my toes and I wanted to be a ballerina when I was a little girl!

7. I am wife to Art and mom to Hannah and Aaron. I graduated from Elgin High School, Elgin, IL and from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI with a BA in French. I also graduated from Middlebury College, Schools Abroad Program Middlebury, VT with a MA French. I love to volunteer at the Mosaic Center, Museum of East Texas and St. Cyprians Episcopal Church. I bet you didn’t know that I can speak fluent French!

My favorite League placement was serving as President 2011-2012. I am a compassionate person and a good listener, but please don’t ask me to help you look for something. I bet you didn’t know when I’m nervous I spell on my fingers. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be Amanda from Melrose Place!

9. I am wife to Tim and mom to Reagan, Ridge and Ty. I graduated from Evadale High School. I graduated from Lamar University with my Associate Degree in Nursing and from SFA with my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. I also graduated from University of Texas Health Science Center with my Masters Degree in Nurse Anesthesia. My favorite placement in the League is Back to School Bonanza. I’m addicted to Law and Order reruns. I bet you didn’t know I can rebuild your alternator or starter!

10. I am wife to Adam and mom to Bridger. I’m a registered nurse at Lufkin State Supported Living Center. I graduated from Marble Falls High School and from SFA with my Bachelors Degree in Nursing. I enjoy entertaining and am a very social person. I love to hunt especially with my bow. When I was really little, I wanted to be a truck driver. I bet you didn’t know, when I listen to the radio in my car…the volume level must be on an even number!

11. I am wife to Kevin and mom to 3 children, Lauren, Austin and Allie. I’m the Vice President of Accounting for Brookshire Brothers. I graduated from Bossier High School and LSU-Shreveport with a BA of Accounting. I attended SFA and graduated with my MBA. I have a big heart and am honest and very detailed, but please don’t ask me to help with decorating! I love to go swimming with my family.

12. I am married to Adam and have 2 children, Chloe and Jace. I am a dental hygienist. I graduated from Lufkin High School, Angelina College and Tyler Jr. College with an AAS in Dental Hygiene. I love to make people laugh and have a good time! I am terrified of heights and can never have enough napkins or hand sanitizer. I wanted to be a ballerina or dance teacher when I was a little girl. I bet you didn’t know I know how to clog!

13. I am married to Stephen and have one child, Anders. We are expecting our second baby very soon. I am an Attorney at a local law firm and practice in education law. I graduated from Lufkin High School. I attended Kilgore College and the University of Texas at Austin and received a BA in English. I graduated from South Texas College of Law with my Juris Doctor. I’m great at multitasking, but please don’t ask me to help with money…I’m good at spending it, but that’s about it. I wanted to be a KTRE news anchor when I was a little girl!

14. I am a newlywed, married to Chris for 6 months. I teach 2nd grade. I graduated from Nederland High School. I graduated from SFA with my Bachelors in Elementary Education and as a Reading Specialist. I am a caring and outgoing person and always give my best, but please don’t ever ask me to sing in front of a crowd, I can’t carry a tune. I’m a very competitive person and I love to shop.

15. I am wife to Brent. I am the Executive Director at the Family Crisis Center of East Texas. I graduated from Central High School and SFA with a Bachelors of Science Degree. My favorite placement in the League was Charity Ball and Rainbow Room. I love the outdoors and love to hunt!

In keeping with our effort to highlight volunteer opportunities in our community, in this issue we will tell you about Kurth Memorial Library and The Mosaic Center, both of which received JLL

Sustainer funding this year. Kurth Memorial Library is a jewel of a library! It is located on Raguet next to Pineywoods Academy and the Boys and Girls Club. The beautiful craftsman style building was a gift to our community from anonymous donors who love reading and understand the value of education. If you have never visited our library, please do so. It will impress you on every level: from the facility, to the collection, to the help available in many fields of research. Lorraine Simoneau, Director of Kurth Memorial Library, tells us that the library needs volunteers in the areas of book processing (the work necessary to get a book on the shelf), and in simple office work (filing, etc.). She says that help is also needed in KML’s Children’s Services. This might involve being a class helper, a story time helper, or assisting with the summer reading program. You could also help with Family Movie times. We all know how important it is for our children to be exposed to reading as a lifelong pursuit. We also know that not all children get that exposure at home. What a great way to impact the lives of children who truly need us! If you would like to know more, or to sign up to volunteer, please call Lorraine Simoneau at 630-0560. The Friends of Kurth Memorial Library offer you another way to volunteer. Friends of KML work in many fields of support of the library. We are all familiar with the Book Sale, which is always held during the fourth weekend of April, but preparation for the event goes on all year. Almost every Thursday morning (year round) from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m., the Friends of KML gather in the back room at the library to sort donated books. It is a huge job and your help would be greatly appreciated! When April comes, Book Sale workers will also be needed. Friends of KML would also like to find someone to help put unsold books from the book auction on eBay. Volunteers with the skill to get them online, to handle shipping, photo taking, etc. are needed. If you can give some time and energy to Friends of KML, call Carlotta Hunt at 632-5357.

The Mosaic Center of Lufkin is a locally supported Christian women’s education center that teaches job and life skills to women in need. It is a wonderful place! It is located in the old Denman-Newman home on First St. across from the Civic Center. The Mosaic Center needs volunteers to be teachers, mentors, house moms, and prayer partners. People who could serve as receptionists are also needed. You may know someone who volunteers at the Mosaic Center. The volunteers that I know love the time they spend there! They all feel that lives are changed for the good through the efforts of The Mosaic Center volunteers. And it is true that 80% of The Mosaic Center graduates are either employed or are in school. Now that is impressive! The Mosaic Center has two slogans which I love. They are both so true: “A hand up, not a hand out” and “When a heart is healed, then a mind can be healed.” These are powerful words! There is something very special about women helping women. We have all had those moments in our lives. Please give thoughtful consideration to making another woman’s life better by your donation of time and talent. You may get a volunteer application online at www.mosaiccenter.org, or you may call Donna Busler, Executive Director, or Sharon Kruk, Volunteer Coordinator, who may be reached at 639-5068. Cathy Pavic has informed us that Affinity Hospice is looking for volunteers. You may call them at 639-2626. Volunteer opportunities are all around us. We are all women who know how to get things done. We possess many talents and skills. Our community needs us!
