Swimming Bay of Plenty Annual Report 2017 Page 8

It is with great pride that I present this report to our members.

The year has been one of continuing good relationships and no matter how you are involved, or how you serve our sport, from families to volunteers I thank you on behalf of all the members. Our sport is hugely volunteer dependent and so many give of their time and their expertise without thought of reward or praise – so it is pleasing that we have made so much progress and it is due to the dedication and contribution of so many.

We have continued to honor our athletes who have risen to the top of competition and who have returned with medals, records and PB’s. Not only have they competed in the pool with distinction, but they have also conducted themselves in a professional and dignified way that brings credit to themselves, their families, their Clubs and to Swimming Bay of Plenty – for such exemplary conduct I congratulate them. But, the focus this season has also been on the younger swimmers, the developing swimmers and the club swimmers. All swimmers, from the enthusiastic new member to the dedicated elite athlete, are a valued part of our membership. It is disappointing to note the reduction in membership numbers and as a sport we must be vigilant to support and to provide for all swimmers at all levels and all potentials. We must be careful not to focus on just the ‘top end’ and we will be critically examining all our activities and encouraging clubs to do likewise so that the demands and expectations of members are identified, acknowledged and, where possible, met.

Thank you to the coaches who have contributed significantly towards planning of events and I note with great pride the introduction of the Junior League initiative which has been warmly adopted by Clubs and I congratulate all those involved. Our ability to offer a different concept to our athletes was a great success. Thank you.

Throughout this past year I have been proud to lead a Board that has embraced the ideal of open communication, consultation and good governance – in all these areas we have made great progress but there is still more to be done. Throughout the year, your Board has worked closely with a number of Clubs, and I acknowledge with gratitude the contribution made by Tauranga Swimming Club, Te Puke Swimming Club and Opotiki Swimming Club, and look forward to supporting them in their new pathway of delivering swimming to their communities without the restraints of being a registered Club with SBOP and SNZ. A robust process is in place for formation of new Clubs and SBOP welcomed the Liz Van Welie Aquatics Swimming Club. It is pleasing to see that a number of Clubs have now adopted the correct constitution which better reflects the relationship and responsibility obligations required by SNZ. We will continue to work with Clubs to further develop the demands of accountability and compliance.

The highlight of 2017 was to showcase swimming to our communities by hosting two major SNZ Events: The Inaugural Junior Festival and Division II. Every Club had at least one or more persons who stepped forward to help wherever it was needed. They were there, dependable to do something for the good of the sport and we simply nailed it. “Thank you”. And I take this opportunity to announce we were successful in our bid to re host both events for 2018. We continue to grow stronger through the efforts of all.

I look forward to seeing athletes and clubs move towards further fulfilling their potential in the

coming year

Bronwen Radford

Swimming Bay of Plenty Annual Report 2017 Page 9

It is encouraging that this year there has been a number of people qualifying as referees, with several more that are likely to achieve this qualification in the coming year. Clubs should continue to encourage people to become officials. Experienced IOTs and starters in particular should consider progressing to become Judge of Strokes/ Referees. There are experienced technical & senior club officials available and willing to spend time as mentors. Please contact your official’s coordinator or a member of the Technical Committee, who can provide you with information that will assist you to gain your qualification. The exams are not difficult and are designed to ensure that all swimmers get a fair go from all officials on pool deck. Our current technical official numbers are: - Referee / JOS 16 4 trainees Starters 11 IOT 46 My congratulations to all those officials, who have gained their SBOP (69 assessments completed) or NZ qualifications (1 assessment completed) this year. Of the 69 qualifications gained this year 51 of these were time keepers. Thank you for making the commitment as you are a valuable part of our team that makes our swim meets successful. We are one of the few regions who still qualify our timekeepers and I feel that this gives our timekeepers a better idea of what their role entails and hopefully encourages them to gain further qualifications. On behalf of the technical committee, I would like to thank all officials, both local and from other Regions who have assisted at our swim meets over the past 12 months. Thanks also to the members of the technical committee for their work in encouraging/training and examining our officials, ensuring that we have sufficient qualified officials at our swim meets. We hope that your involvement was enjoyable and rewarding, and look forward to seeing you on pool deck in the future. Steve Knox Technical Official Convener

OBITUARIES It was with great sadness that we farewelled two members of our BOP Swimming Community this past year. A famous writer once said “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give”. If that is true then Tom Savage and Tam Carter both made a great life. Today we take a moment to remember both Tam and Tom who contributed so much to our sport. They both helped to grow and develop swimming in the Bay Of Plenty at both Club and Regional level and we are grateful for their time and efforts. Both Tam and Tom gave much to swimming and their community and asked for nothing in return. Tom received a SBOP Service Award in 1986 followed by Honours in 1992. He received a SNZ Service Award in 1990 and SNZ Honours in 1997. Tom was made a Life member of SBOP in 1994. Tom was a recipient of the Queens Service Medal. Tam received a SBOP Service Award in 1977 followed by Honours in 1992. She received a SNZ Service Award in 1997. Tam was made a Life Member of SBOP in 2000. Our deepest sympathies remain with their families. We can only begin to imagine the huge void which remains in their lives but we hope they can find time to cherish the memories.
