Pastor’s Message
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!
New families and returning families of Resurrection Lutheran Church
and Riviera Hall Lutheran School:
Our spiritual life is about conversation: with God, with God’s Word, and with each other. Our
mission is to simply share the conversations we are having with others both already known to us and those
we meet along our sacred journey. That’s it! Simple: share what you are thinking. Done.
Next, I’d like to announce and welcome to our staff Kristin Dwyer, our new youth leader, religion
teacher and a very good preacher taking over as Ms. Cara moves into her exciting new role as a fourth
grade classroom teacher. We also welcome our new office manager and communication director Debra
Kalianov, a long- time member of Resurrection and friend of the Riviera Hall’s community. Debra and
Dave are a blessing to us. We also added recently Joel Brandon as our 9:00 a.m. praise band leader who is
incredible. He is also has been putting together a youth praise band over the summer and is available for
teaching private voice and piano instruction.
This year we are moving school’s chapel to Friday at the school 10:15 a.m. As you may know our
Chapel rooted in the form and ethos of our Lutheran heritage, supports the excellence of our school and
encourages students to reflect on questions that have long been of central importance to human life: Who
am I? What is the nature of the universe, of God, and of our modern time? How should I lead a good life?
What makes a better world? Why is Jesus the Son of God? Chapel also allows students to experience the
religious traditions of the our country in action because students do not sit; they plan and participate and
run weekly chapel as readers, musicians, and speakers, sound board technicians, computer and video en-
gineers and engage in live production. For these reasons and others, Chapel is a foundational pillar of the
Riviera Hall experience: an excellent hands-on education, and nurtures the ongoing conversation about
God in our lives. We are also celebrating the new accreditation status and new teaching staff.
On September 14th we will be installing our Sunday School teachers and launching a new season.
This year I would like us to focus on as a church, school and Sunday school Galatians 5:22-23 (New
American Standard Bible (NASB)):
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithful-
ness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
The nine aspects of the fruit can be woven into any Sunday school format/ lesson. How is what we
are doing, thinking learning reflective of the fruit of the spirit? Maybe take one per month.
Finally I’d like to invite all to the many fellowship events we will be having in the fall. Woofstock
returns, Women’s Retreat, Men’s Golfing Day, Men’s Advance, Women’s Breakfast, Men’s monthly
Bible study, October Fest and many, many more. All 6th Grader’s from all schools are invited to church
September 7th at 9:00 a.m. for the traditional “Welcome to Middle School Sunday” to receive their signed
Bibles.
May God continue to richly bless you and your family as we begin our 2014-2015 season.
In Christ,
+Pastor Ken Johnson

School Days...
Backpacks are filled with pen, pencils, notebooks and essentials. Barbers (are there still barbers) and stylists have been kept
busy trimming summer locks and Norman’s Uniforms has had to deal with
endless lines of parents and students spending the last few days of summer
trying on and purchasing uniforms for the upcoming year. Around RHLS and RLC preparation for school year 2014-2015 has gone
on all summer. Classrooms have been painted, pavers and AstroTurf have
been set, the handicap ramp has been poured and the new roof is being nailed
as we speak. Along with physical improvements, the curriculum at Riviera Hall
has been greatly expanded. We added a STEM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-
ematics). All grades, Transitional Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, will par-
ticipate in this hands-on science program each week. The U.S. Department of
Commerce estimates that jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math
(STEM) will grow 17 percent by 2018—nearly double the growth for non-
STEM fields? By 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM
jobs because there will not be enough qualified workers to fill them. STEM is
where jobs are today and where job growth will be in the future. Our belief
is to introduce this area of study and advancement to our students now so
they will be best prepared for their future. Riviera Hall is one of the few
schools to offer a STEM program for Transitional Kindergarten through
Grade Eight. The campus looks beautiful and our students are beautiful inside and
out because they carry the love of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, in their
hearts. With all this beauty surrounding us, how can we not
be excited about School Year 2014-2015?
Blessings,
Phyllis Nollan, principal
