Activities to help your child become a more confident reader Make a cartoon strip about the story, identifying the main stages. Make a simple story, cut out each sentence and jumble them up and let your child

put them into the ‘right’ order. Ask questions about why characters did certain things. Choose five words from the story which your child finds tricky and be sure they

understand their meaning. Make a recording of the story together using music and other sound effects to add

to the story, then play the tape back and read while you listen. Find different kinds of ‘matching’ words, e.g. make lists of words that rhyme with

‘dog’, or words that begin with ‘sh’. Design a new cover for the book. Make a different ending to the story together, or a new story involving the

characters. Draw pictures to go with a specific sentence from the book. Act out parts of a story with your child. Draw a character from the story and describe/write an explanation of their

character/role. Ask you child to retell the story in their own words, and from different characters’

points of view.
