liv e and w ork at Kennedy Road and appreciated the

building 's potential as an ex hibition space.

T hrough the co llaboration of v arious institutions

indiv iduals interested in the arts, bu! w ithout

particular patronage, an ex hibition is being

"out of context". Painters, sculptors, photogr

installation, performance and v ideo artists are par

ticipating in this event. T hey are not ex hibiting in an"ide a l" gallery space; it is not an anony mous site. The

bu ilding stimulates - it is full of associations and

atmosphere, yet the space and the colloborative

organisation offer the artists a special freedom to

create and to exhibit their creations.

In a sense, the artists in this exhibition are alw ays

w orking out of contex t - displaced in a cultural climate

that is often indifferent to their activities. T his also

applies to the pub lic funding bod ies w here there is a

serious lack of support ( w hich does not hav e to befinancial) for the v isual arts in current policy . Indiv idua l

galler ies and pr iv ately funded o rganisations like the

Hong Kong A rts Centre are simply unable to fill the gap

and promote contemporary arts as they w ould w ish.

Leading up to the ex hibition , a ser ies of meetings are

being held, w here the artists and those w orking in sup

port of the ex hibition can com e together. V isiting

artists, administrators and w riters are w elcome to

attend these meetings or to use the grouping as a net

w orking facility w hile in Hong Kong. W e are alsohop ing to inv ite m embers of the international arts press

to v isit Hong Kong in October.

W e are try ing not only to encourag e loca l interest, but

also to dev elop artistic links w ith the U S and Europe to

improve international aw areness of the v isual arts in

Hong Kong. It is hoped that through The 15 Kennedy

Road Ex hibition, opportunities for exhibitions overseas

w ill be generated.

acceptance in this late- modern world. A nd

intervention had been reduced to a stultified pattern

of life. N ow that the modern city had learned to

dispense its favors to a ll the w hining parties. W hat

rem ains is s iill the pract ica l/spiritual question.

In the backdrop all hopes and desires seem

dam ned an d unreal. To see a connection between all

these fragments is to w alk a tight- rope tow ards clarity ,

or j ust further confusion.

the theme of population e x plosion issues mounted by

Epox y g ro up artists, co ordinated by M ing Fay.T he EPOX Y A rt G roup w as begu n by six C hinese

artists w ho settled in New York. In the pro cess of

adj usting lo this new env ironm ent, these artists

formed a suppo rt netw ork to discu ss the major

chang es in their artw ork and lives. Discussion led to

radical experiments based on m ing ling div erse A sian

and W estern cultural influences. Beg inn ing in 1982,

photography. She completed several photo essays

Sunny Pang studied dance in Hong Kong, T okyo, and

New York, w here he also danced and choreographed

for the A delphi Dance T heatre.

He has created w orks for com panies in Hong Kong

and in 1983 co- founded the multim edia group M ixedV isions for a series of performances.

In the same year he w as guest choreog rapher w ith the

T heatre Ballet- T aipei and was inv ited by the T aipei C u l

tural Dev elopm ent Comm ittee to attend their choreog

raphy showcase.

In 1984 he presented a so lo concert, L ife Ex tension, at

Z uni Icosahedron, a first am ong loca l dance artists.

Since hen, he has been g iv ing regular solo recitals

both locally and abroad.

In 1986, he w as inv ited by the T aipei C loudga te Dance

T heatre to stage the piece To T he T une of O ing Ping,

and presented a trio programme Sw ordfishtrombone/

Goldberg V ariations at the Hong Kong A cademy for

the Perfo rming A rts and at the T aipei Dance W orkshop.

A mong his most representative choreographies are

such dances as Quasar, T w ilight Beings, Kwaidan/

Emaki, and A llegory From A Capital City , w hich w ere

all created spec ially for C ity Contemporary Dance

Company w here he is resident choreographer.

Born in 1957. J im Shum is Hong Kong's best know n

experimenta ilmmaker. A lthough he s arted making

super 8 film s in schoo l, Shum became interested in

experimental cinema after reading about them. W hile

w orking in quantity survey ing. Shum made a series of

short film s that took top pr iz es in consecutiv e y ears atthe Hong Kong Independent Short Film Festival in

1979 and 1980. Resign ing from his job. Shum helped

to found the avant- garde theatre group Zuni Ico sahed

ron in 1981. Soon after, he began composing elec

tronic m usic soundtracks for feature film s, and making

some of Hong Kong's first video art pieces. He re

turned to experimental films

T ommy W ong, one of the founder- members of the City

Contemporary Dance Com pany , has been its technical

direc tor and resident lighting designer since 1980 and

has designed more than 1 0 0 pieces of dance for the

company. In addition he has accomplished numerous

lighting- and set- designed w orks for ov erseas and

local professional theatre groups. He has conducted

stage- management and lighting - design courses for

City Contemporary Dance Group, the Festival F ringe

and the Education Department of Hong Kong

University .

In 1985- 86, he was aw arded a B ritish Council scholar

ship to study theatre administration, stage manage

ment and design under the supervision of Mr. Tony

Bond, technical adv isor to the National T heatre inLondon.

Recent engagements have included the set & lighting

design for T he Hong Kong Philharm on ic Orchestra's

"M ov ies & M usica ls Extravaganza" and "Christmas

Fantasia" at the Hong Kong Coliseum; lighting design

for the Hong Kong Ballet's '*G ise lle" and MLa Sy l-

phide"; Bestreben Drama A ssociation' s "F ate Sym

phony " and the Hong Kong Dance Company 's MY ue

F ei", w hich opened the Elev enth F estival of A sian A rts.
