Principal’s news Congratulations to all students who were part of the AAS Performing Arts Showcase last week. Thank you to families and community members for supporting this evening. We are very fortunate to have wonderful staff supporting our students. In particular, thank you to Mrs Lori Brooks, Mrs Debbie Schwartz, Mr Jonny Gorden and Ms Teresa Crowe for all of their work to make the event successful. We are currently working on finalising curriculum offerings and staffing for 2020. We are excited that in 2020 we will be offering:

Stage 1 Design and Technology - Furniture Construction

Stage 1 Business Innovation for Year 10 students, based on the Shark Tank program. We are

working in collaboration with Yorketown Area School and the University of Adelaide on this

exciting program where students will produce prototypes of solutions to ‘real-life’ issues from

an area of interest. Our program was launched Wednesday with our current Year 9 students

travelling to Adelaide with YAS students to the 2019 Shark Tank Venture Showcase.

Year 7-9 Future Focussed Learning – this program will operate for two lessons per week and will be assessed against the two strands of Civics and Citizenship in the Australian Curriculum: knowledge and understanding and inquiry skills. The focus of this program is for students to work collaboratively in small groups to develop solutions to ‘real life’ problems and to develop critical and creative thinking processes that will be beneficial across all learning areas.

Year 3-6 students will also be working collaboratively on Problem Based Learning activities

focussed on sustainability and linked to Australian Curriculum Science and HASS.

The last three learning areas highlighted above are based on our AAS Vision Statement: Our students are creative and critical thinkers who positively impact on their local and global communities. All programs support the development of skills which our students will need in the future including: problem solving, creativity, innovation and the ability to work collaboratively. The programs also link with the work which is occurring in the Junior Primary investigations, making it a focus from Reception to year 10 and providing continuity of learning across the school. In addition to these programs, Cherie Beech will lead the development of an aquaponics program and community garden. I am very excited by these curriculum based programs which will focus on skills for the future.

On Monday, families would have received information regarding our 2020 Transition Day – Tuesday 26th November. As stated in the information letter, the day is not about class compositions or teachers for 2020, but rather about the environment the students will be in and some of the structures which can be expected. Students will commence and finish the day in their current classrooms. Please note; information regarding classes and teacher allocation for 2020 will be included with the End of Year reports. Additionally, our current Year 11 students will be participating in a ‘Preparation for Year 12 Week’; 27th-29th November. The purpose of these days is for current Year 11 students to get a ‘head start’ on the subjects they are undertaking as part of the Stage 2 course load in 2020. Monday 25th November is our last Student Free Day for 2020. During the day, staff will be reviewing our 2019 data sets and progress towards our goals. We will then refine our actions for the 2020 Site Improvement Plan (SIP) which focuses on Literacy and Numeracy improvement. Amanda Kimber, Secondary Project Officer and Kim Hoskins, Senior Leader Primary Learner Improvement will also work with our staff in developing our Year 7-9 Future Focussed learning and Year 3-6 Problem Based Learning programs.

Facilities work

The tiling of the Front Office verandah has commenced and will take at least three weeks to

complete. The Front Office is now at the back of the Admin Building.

We are replacing part of the border on the Junior Primary playground. This area will be finished

off with new soft fall (bark chips).

Telstra have started the work for the fibre optic cabling (SWIFT).

The AV upgrade in the Gym will be undertaken next week, 25th November. This includes the

installation of the drop down screen and projector. Thank you to Gym Jams for cancelling their

Week 7 session whilst the work is undertaken.

I was advised Tuesday evening that the upgrade of our internet cabling will be undertaken during

the January School holidays. This will ensure we commence 2020 with vastly improved internet

access.

The next few weeks will be extremely busy, including:

25th November Student Free Day

26th November Whole School Transition Day

27th-29th November Preparation for Year 12 Week

5th December AAS Presentation Night

13th December – last day of 2019 School year, with an early dismissal of 2pm

17th December – SACE results released

Kind regards, Margaret

Leader’s News Deputy Principal

Yesterday our Year 9 students combined with year 9 and 10 students from Yorketown Area School to attend the Shark Tank Venture Showcase at the Adelaide Convention Centre. This combined school excursion was undertaken in preparation for the sites combined Stage 1 Business Innovation subject being implemented in semester 1, 2020. Students had the opportunity to visit the business stalls of the over 500 students from across the state to view prototypes of products and viewed the finalists ‘pitches’ about the solutions they had developed to resolve real life problems. As part of the day, students also heard speeches from the founder of MIE Lab and the Shark Tank in schools program Andrew Bensley, John Gardner MP, The University of Adelaide’s Vice Chancellor Peter Rathjen, Senator David Fawcett and Shark Tank

television judge Steve Baxter. As part of the Stage 1 Business Innovation subject in 2020, as Year 10’s, students will undertake the Shark Tank program and will have the exciting opportunity to present their solutions and products at a future Shark Tank Venture Showcase. Following the Whole School Transition Day on Tuesday the 26th of November, AAS will be holding a Year 12 Transition Week in preparation for students commencing Stage 2 SACE studies in 2020. These three days will be from Wednesday the 27th to Friday the 29th of November and all of our current Year 11 students are required to attend. The purpose of these days is for students to get a ‘head start’ on subjects they are undertaking as part of their Stage 2 Course load in 2020 and will be run by the 2019 teachers of the subjects. These sessions will cover a variety of administrative tasks of the subjects and cover core skills that will enable students to commence the rigorous learning requirements linked to assessments as soon as the commence school in 2020. With many thanks, Amy East.

R-6 Leader

We are excited to be taking part in the Australia wide ‘Story Dog’ program. Story Dogs is a fun and unique reading support program where students spend approximately 20minutes per week reading to a trained companion dog and its handler. This program is run by volunteers and we are lucky enough to have ‘Gidget’ the labrador coming in weekly to listen to some of our students read. Teachers have selected a small group of students to read to Gidget with the aim of encouraging a love of reading. Notes went home yesterday with students who have been selected to be

involved, with necessary consent forms attached.

In Week 8 and 9 (Friday 6th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th December) the Year 3-5 students will participate in their swimming program conducted in the pool at the Highview Holiday Village. Further information and consent forms will be sent home later in the week. We are seeking parent volunteers to help supervise students in the pool. Provided with the information will be a tear off slip to indicate your availability if you are willing to help.

There will also be information going home to families shortly about next year’s Year 3-6 camp. In order to make plans for next year’s camp, we will be gauging student interest in a choice of proposed activities. To help support this process please ensure your child’s preference/ interest is indicated and returned to school by the due date. Kind Regards, Deony Sims

Stage 1 Outdoor Education On the 4th-6th of November, we travelled to Mambray Creek, 30 minutes out of Port Pirie. As a part of stage 1 Outdoor Education we had to complete a semi self-sufficient 3-day outdoor journey, where we were responsible for cooking and providing for ourselves, under guidance. Over the three days, we walked 33.6km on a variety of walking trails in the Mount Remarkable National Park. We were treated with amazing weather, wildlife and scenery throughout the journey whilst developing our camping and bushwalking skills Stage 1 Outdoor Education Students
