CHRISTMAS, itself, is all about the greatest present that

God gave the world a long, long time ago……. JESUS! Since then,

families and friends give presents to each other.

Here at Glendale First United Methodist Church, the spirit of

Christmas giving is still very much alive as we take part in various Mission

Projects at this time of the year. As a ministry of the Church, Susanna

Wesley Children’s Center is collecting socks in its desire to give back to

the community. If you wish to take part, you can donate new pairs of socks,

of any kind and size, as part of this year’s Christmas gift-giving project.

Thank you for the love, care and the gift of sharing.

COLD WEATHER SHELTER - Serving the Needs of Glendale As was the case last year, the area cold weather shelter will be

offered by the St. Mark’s Episcopal congregation in Highland Park.

This small congregation graciously invites about 30 people into its

sanctuary for the evening where pews become beds, with a little bit of

cushioning.

Our collection of coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, and socks will be

transported to this site before it opens on December 1. Later

contributions will also be distributed through this church.

Look for the announcement of an opportunity to join others in providing an evening meal for the

participants of this ministry.

The cold weather shelter will close about March 1, 2018.

Let us join in serving the needs of people in need.

We Serve in the Community Bell ringing

Each year, our church has helped the Salvation Army raise money during the

Christmas season for their local outreach programs. Once again, we will be ringing

the bell at the Ralphs on the corner of Stocker and Central on Wednesday, December

13 from 10 am to 7 pm. We need at least two people each hour. If you are interested

in taking a one hour shift that day, please contact Bruce Hinckley at 818-244-9183.

Adopt A Family

We will be adopting a family through the Salvation Army and providing presents for the parents

and children so that they might have a bright holiday season. Please contact Nancy Kachline at

[email protected] or Debbie Hinckley at [email protected] if you would like to purchase a

gift for the family. If you do not wish to shop, checks payable to the church and marked “Missions

Adopt A Family” may be turned into the office or given to Nancy or Debbie, and we will do the

shopping for you.

Almost seventy people gathered on Thanksgiving Day in the Carlson

Fellowship Center for food and fellowship. All ages were present from young

children to 103-year-old Orma Rowe, who celebrated her birthday on

Thanksgiving day.

We gathered in song and prayer and then everyone feasted on the delicious

food that was prepared by Diane Garner and many and various helpers. We were

then invited to write down what we are thankful for and the responses were then

read aloud for all to hear. Games were available for anyone who wished to stay

and continue the fellowship. What a wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving Day.

*CHALLENGERS CHRISTMAS DINNER & AUCTION*

The Challengers Class will hold their Annual Dinner & Auction. Honeybaked Ham and all the trimmings

will be the main course, followed by our traditional Auction, conducted by our auctioneer, Sheldon Haase. All

funds collected for the evening will be divided between two Mission Projects - Domestic and Foreign. The funds

collected will be given in Don Laird’s name, past president of our class, whom we lost this year due to an illness.

Through a class survey by email and a spirited Cabinet meeting discussion, the Domestic Mission Project

will be thru Cal-Pac Conference Advance # 901670 - Supporting UMCOR’s, Response to Disasters. When

responding, UMCOR provides training, financial assistance and community collaboration to churches and

partners.

The funds for our Foreign Mission Project will be through our auctioneer, Sheldon. He has suggested the

Maua Methodist Hospital for their service fund that will pay hospital bills for poor people in the area. A number

of members from our congregation in the past have traveled with Sheldon to the Maua Hospital and have seen

up-close the financial straits patients face.
