FEATURE: THE YOGI FOUNDATION

Terry has decided to raise money for the Yogi Foundation to help raise moneyto send a family on holiday - Yogi Foundation : making memories and deliveringdreams for individuals with a spinal cord injury and their families.

Inspired by Bryan ‘Yogi’ Davies, The Yogi Foundation provides support andfunding for people with a spinal cord injury and their families to enable them totake a family holiday, which can be prohibitive for individuals who have a spinalcord injury due to cost and care requirements.

Terry wants to do this challenge as Bryan ‘Yogi’ Davies, the Yogi Foundation’sinspiration, wanted to take his family on a family holiday to the south of Franceand The Yogi Foundation was looking to help him to do that. Sadly Yogi passedaway before he and his family could take that holiday and Terry wants to raisemoney so that although Yogi and his family weren’t able to take the holiday, another family will be able to make new memories.

Terry was a close friend of Yogi, and that’s why it is so important to him to makethis challenge a great success and fundraise as much money as possible forThe Yogi Foundation. A Total Giving page has been set up for the challenge, and the Yogi website address is www.yogifoundation.org.uk

The personal challenge that Terry has set himself is to ride 4,000 miles on hisTriumph Explorer motorbike, riding to every away match for RGC 1404, for theSwalec/WRU Championship fixtures for 2014/ 2015.

This is a physically and mentally demanding challenge for anyone, but for Terry, who has been living with back problems for most of his life, and didn’t think hewould ever be able to do this ride for Yogi, it is going to be a real challenge!

FEATURE: THE YOGI FOUNDATION

To get through to the end of the sea-son each trip that he makes will addup to over 4,000 miles on the road, inever deteriorating weather conditions, throughout the cold, wet and blusterywinter weekends, dark nights, wind-ing roads and many hours away fromhis friends and family, Terry really hastaken on a massive challenge!

The money raised will go towardshelping a family to take a holiday - theaim of The Yogi Foundation is justthat, to make memories and deliverdreams. Every eight hours someone

is told they will never walk again, and spinal cord injury can happen toanyone, in a split second, and changesomeone’s life forever. But it doesn’tjust impact on them, it affects thewhole family.

How many holidays have you takenthis year? Imagine if you weren’t ableto take your family on even one holi-day, and give them those treasuredmemories that last forever! How much would you give to be ableto make your family happy! Typically aholiday for someone with a spinal cord

injury can cost three times more thanfor a family who do not have to con-sider care of loved ones with spinalcord injuries.

Your support means the world toTerry, but being an unassuminggentleman he’s not going to run upto you with a bucket and ask you formoney; so please donate generouslythrough the Yogi Total Giving page, it’svery easy to donate and your moneywill make the world of difference to afamily this year.

Saturday,27thSeptemberRGC40vTondu17

Ple Head Coach Chris Horsman spoketo RGC News about the turnaround afterthe halftime team talk in the win againstTondu.

Too Much For Tondu“Pleasied with the result and to pick upthe win, but we were disappointed withthe performance in the 1st half as wewere sloppy and disjointed in the open-ing 40 minutes. Myself and Josh spoke athalf time about control, as we needed tocontrol the game and where, when andwhat to do.

The response was excellent from theboys, and it showed in how we played inthat last 40 minutes.

I thought both sides tried to play rugby, even with the stop/start nature of thegame and but we were the only ones thatlooked like winning. Credit to all the play-ers who scored 23 points and nilled Tonduin the 2nd half.

I have to give a special mention to AfonBagshaw today who was excellent indefence and attack. He has been on formover the past 3 games and is getting backto the performances that won him WalesU20’s call up.

It is another 5 points and we look forwardto another good performance at Narberthnext weekend”

RGC put in a strong 2nd half perform-ance to claim a bonus point win in a sundrenched Eirias. Scoring an unanswered23 points after the half time break withstrong running and clinical finishing.

It was the visitors that started the gamebrighter, and after a minute Tondu had al-ready missed a penalty. They were giftedan easy try when a James Lang pass wasintercepted and the Waterwheelers ranin under the posts for the score and easyconversion.

RGC continued with the lacklustre play, but winning a scrum against the headgave the Eirias crowd something to cheerabout.

The Gogs opted for a simple 3 points fromthe boot of James Lang to get a score onthe board, and RGC began to settle downand play some rugby and after a greatbreak from Andrew Williams the ball wentthrough hands to release Afon Bagshawfor the try. Lang hit the conversion.

Tondu answered back with another try,and during the analysis sessions the RGCdefence will look back at this as a softscore. The added extras were kicked.

James Lang was looking impressive withthe boot, but it was big run from the fly-halfthat lead to the Gogs second try and after

he was held up on the line, the ball wasrecycled and Maredydd Francis picked upthe score. Lang added the conversion.

On the 30 minute mark Captain KelvinDavies made it try number three, as hedived over in the corner to stretch thelead.

Tondu were still in the game when theadded a penalty and as the half time whis-tle approached a scuffle involving bothsets of players led to both sides having aplayer sin binned – try scores Francis yel-low carded by the referee.

The Eirias crowd were fully entertained inthat first half with some great open rugby, though from a coaching point of few theRGC dressing room would look to pointout a few defensive issues.

Once of the big pluses this season hasbeen the return of Huw Grundy, as hebig centre adds a powerful dimension tothe RGC backline, and he was breakingthrough the gainline again on a number ofoccasions.

It was pace and quick feet that gave RGCthe bonus point try, with a superb indi-vidual effort from Carwyn Ap Myrddin. Thewinger picked up the ball in his own haveand raced down the line before dancingpast the defensive tackles to go in at thecorner. Already this early in the season itwill be a contender for try of the season.

The 27-17 lead soon became 30 pointwhen James Lang kicked a penalty, andshowed in terms of game managementthey have matured on the pitch as theyopted for the points.

Afon Bagshaw was putting in an impres-sive display both in attack and defence ashe chased and tackled every runner thatwent up against him. The Wales U20seffort was rewarded with his 2nd try of thegame after he spotted a gap in the visitor’sbackline to run through under the postswhich also meant a simple conversion.

The frenetic pace of the half began toslow down, which was understandableand RGC were to play the remaining 10minutes with 14 men after hooker AndyBaston was yellow carded. The incentiveto use the man advantage in the packwas clear for Tondu, and the camped onthe RGC line but were unable to breakthrough.

The final score was a textbook play afteran RGC scrum, the ball was sent wide forTom Blackwell to go over for another oneof his clinical finishes.

Once again a lot of credit has to go to thatRGC pack, as they dominated to scrumfor the whole 80 minutes. The excitingrunning from the backline may take a lot ofthe headlines but the groundwork is builtupfront and that doesn’t go unnoticed bythe Eirias crowd.

Followinng report kindly supplied by ScottLawson of RGC News

RGC lost to Narberth in agame that can only be de-scribed as disappointing. TheGogs headed south knowingNarberth hadn’t lost at homesince RGC beat them lastSeptember, so it was going tobe a tough test in the West. They couldn’t have had a better start whenDanny Cross went over after a minute withRhodri Carlton-Jones hitting the conver-sion.

Without really getting in to the game theGogs were 12-Nil up after a tremendousbreak from Alex Schwarz. The RGCscrumhalf picked up the ball in his ownline and broke through to sprint down thepitch to offload to James Lang to run over.It was an impressive score from Schwarzwho has been back to his best form thisseason.

The boot of Carlton-Jones with a penaltyextended the lead and the score was 15-nil after 10 minutes.

From that point the RGC didn’t touch theball for another 15 minutes as the homeside kept the ball with clever phase play. The Narberth backline were showing goodpace when the ball was spread wide.

The Otters put 2 tries on the board as theyturned the possession into points, with thehome crowd urging their players on. RGCstruggled to get back in the game, as theNarberth defensive line worked well. RGClooked to play the ball to hand but couldn’tbreak through.

On the half time whistle took the lead witha penalty from Griffiths, and RGC headedto the dressing room knowing they neededto step it up.

It was more of the same at the start ofthe second half with another well workedtry from Narberth after some good handsmoving the ball wide

The game was being played in the RGChalf with RGC looking to break on anumber of occasions but were closeddown.

Bryn Williams made a big tackle to stopanother try, but Narberth added a dropgoal for a 6 point lead. Afon Bagshaw wasnext to put in a huge tackle as the homeside pressed for that score.

Winger Tom Blackwell went close as heran down the wing with the tryline in sight. The game was help up for an injury to

James Lang, who later was released fromhospital.

RGC finally got the try on the board after adriving maul with Maredydd Francis cred-ited with the score. The Gogs took a onepoint lead with the Carlton-Jones conver-sion and at that point you felt RGC wouldgo on and seal the win.

The next score was going to be crucial, and it looked like the Gogs were let offthe hook after Narberth missed a simplepenalty. As the clock ticked down the

referee blew for a forward pass, and fromthe scrum it was judged the scrum waswheeled round. The home side didn’t missanother opportunity and the penalty wasscored.

Looking back at the game RGC never tookcontrol at any point and didn’t capitaliseon being gifted a 15 nil start, that said theycould have come away with a win whichmade the result even more disappointing.

Phil from Rhyl unhappywith match report

Veteran Rhyl prop, Phil Blakoe, has complained to the Inde-pendent Press Complaints Com-mission after a report on theNorth Wales website.

Veteran Rhyl prop, Phil Blakoe, hascomplained to the Independent PressComplaints Commission after a report onthe web-site following Saturday’s gamebetween Bala 2nds and Rhyl 2nds.

Phil has taken issue with the following partof the report:

‘Rhyl made it clear though that they hadn’tcome to lose and fought back hard in theopening quarter of the second half. Their60 year old prop wrestled like a bear allday with the Bala front row, forcing YnyrTyn Coed to come off with a slipped diskand bending replacement prop RobinCablyd into some unusual positions’.

He stated: ‘I don’t mind being compared toa bear but to say that I’m 60 is just not on,I’m only 59!’

Some of you may remember Phil beinginterviewed in Denbigh by Rick O’Shea onScrum V nine years ago, Phil being 50 atthe time.

As you can imagine, Phil has taken all thisin good spirit and it’s great to see a bit ofhumour in the game for a change.

A big thank you also to Harry at Bala whosupplied the match report, can’t wait untilthe next one.

Mumph’s Ultimate Welsh Rugby Calendar 2015

Mumph’s no risk Club fund Raiser is back again followingthe success of his 2014 Rugby Calendar which helpedraise over £2000.00 for grass roots rugby in Wales.

“It was our first year trying to help raise funds for clubs.”said Mumph, who is seen as Wales’ foremost cartoonist.“It was a good start and this year, we expect to raise a lotmore money and basically, it’s down to the clubs to takeadvantage of this no risk fund raising idea.”

Mumph, was the creator of the South Wales Echo’s car-toon page Cwm Offit, which followed the adventures ofCwm Offit RFC a typically grass roots Rugby Club basedsomewhere just off the heads of the valleys road.

Four years ago, Mumph published his first UltimateWelsh Rugby Calendar. Its popularity has grown everyyear and last year Mumph decided that as his calendarwas based solely on rugby. It was only fair that the clubsbe given an opportunity to share in its success.

“I’m well aware of the financial situation our grass rootsclubs find themselves in.” said Mumph “They are thebackbone of Welsh Rugby and without them there wouldbe no grand slams. It occurred to me that the calendarmight be able to help the clubs raise some much neededcash.”

Mumph’s idea was very simple, to allow the clubs to selltheir own branded version of the Ultimate Welsh RugbyCalendar to their own supporters and followers.

“The clubs get the calendar on a wholesale basis.” saidMumph “They get free samples of the calendar carry-ing their own badges, colour and branding. They usethese samples to collect orders in advance. That way, they know exactly how many calendars they need beforeordering them from me. The clubs place their orders, weprint and deliver them in plenty of time for Christmas.”

It’s a system that appears to have worked well. Accordingto Mumph, Clubs raised over £2000.00 last year. “It’s nota life changing amount.” said Mumph “But it did make adifference to some clubs, if only to help pay for training kitor transportation costs.”

This year, the Calendar has been improved yet again andcan now be used as a desktop or wall hung. Clubs geta full page that incorporates their own branding and canbe anything from club fixture lists, Photographs or evensponsors’ logos.

“That’s certainly a way forward.” added Mumph “If clubscan get their sponsors to fund the calendar, we can easilyincorporate the sponsor’s logo and contact details. We’vealso designed the calendar in such a way that the cluband sponsors branding are displayed clearly on the frontof the calendar all year round.”

This year Mumph is also pleased that the Calendar willbe using some Welsh language. “There’s no way I couldcompose the Humorous poems in Welsh, even though Iam a Welsh speaker.” Said Mumph “But we’ve listed the6 Nations fixtures in Welsh and English and we’ve also

noted the days and months in Welsh too.”

Also included in the Calendar are all the dates for the World cup matchesand the four pools. “It’s going to be difficult enough to get out of pool A.”Said Mumph “Let alone lift the trophy. But I’ve covered all this in the calen-dar. Whoever we’re up against, wherever we play, the Welsh fans will be100% behind the boys.”When asked what the clubs should do to participate in this fund raiserMumph said

“The clubs just need to get in touch with me to register their interest andwe’ll make sure they get their branded free sample calendar.”

First fixtures of the season are alwaysnervous affairs but, when 8 of yourplayers are having their first evergame, nails get bitten! The gameopened somewhat scrappily but soonsettled down to a really competitivecontest with Colwyn Bay applyingmost of the early pressure. However,Welshpool’s dogged defence held theBay until a break from the home side, two rucks later the ball found FionaMoss on the halfway line, she evadeda couple of tackles and showed aclean pair of heels to score an uncon-verted try.

The next twenty minutes saw eachside threatening in its turn but somevery big hits from both defences keptthe scoreboard idle. Finally, Cat Dav-ies proved too strong to bring downand, breaking several tackles, foughther way to score in the corner shortlybefore half time.

Colwyn Bay had not come to lie down. The game resumed with them provid-ing most of the pressure again. A pen-alty ten metres from the line was justheld out but continued pressure sawthem get their just rewards shortlyafter. The next 20 minutes looked as ifit might become a battle of the for-wards as both sides started to tire andattack after attack was cut short. Thestalemate was broken when ColwynBay found some space on the rightand a mismatch of forwards defend-ing against backs. With the game noweven, both sides threw everything atgetting the win. It seemed to havecome when Fiona Moss broke frominside her own 22 and ran the lengthof the pitch only to be hauled all theway back for a scrum.

Honours even – and rightfully so. Thisgame was notable for the size of thecrowd watching, I expect there will beeven more for the next fixture. TheLadies did good.

Excellent start to the 15s season byBay Ladies

Today (Sunday 28th september) sawthe Bay ladies get their 15s seasonunderway.

WOMENS RUGBY

Last season saw some commitmentissues which meant the Ladies strug-gled to play some 15s fixtures, I’mglad to say this season hasn’t encoun-tered the same problem.

On arriving at Welshpool RFC thecoaching team were delighted to see17 Players arrive for this mid walesfixture. The sun was shining and thepitch was in great condition, all theingredients for a great game of rugbywere in place and the Ladies didn’tdissapoint.

Bay won the toss and decided to playwith the wind and the sun behindthem but to our dissapointment wedidn’t use this to our advantage andafter some big runs from the hugewelshpool pack it was first score towelshpool. The Bay Girls regroupedand after the restart got into the gamewith some great tackling in the middleof the park. It was at this point that wewere starting to hit our stride but againhard work by the welshpool forwardssaw the home team get on the scoresheet again.

The ladies were now 10 - 0 down andthen all of a sudden it clicked. Somegreat work by our own forwards andthe backs remaining in good shapeand breaking the gain line kept mostof the second half in welshpools 22and then finally the breakthrough agreat team effort and a first try for the

bay, 10 - 5 and game on. Much of thesame was to follow some great pres-sure and commited tackles forcingwelshpool to make some mistakes, and with mistakes came the secondbay try 10 - 10 game on!

As we moved into the final quarter ofthe game it was tug of war, mistakesfrom both sides saw it open up withwelshpool initially looking the morelikely, it was then when the Bay’s newfull back made a try saving tackleand switched momentum back in theBays favour. In the dying minutes thegirls gave it their all but unfortunatelycouldn’t make the break through.

All in all a great competitive 80minutes played. With new girls onboth teams gaining valuable experi-ence and we look forward to a returnfixture.

Well played Welshpool Ladies andGreat stuff Bay Ladies
