The development of Stockley Park involved the transformation of a 400-acre site that had been used for gravel extraction and as land fill for most of the 20th century.

Turning it from a highly polluted and unattractive site into one of Britain’s most successful business parks was no easy matter.

The land was considered unattractive for development, with no value as an amenity and central government restrictions on local government spending greatly limited the ability of the local council to do anything with the site on its own.
Acclaimed Manx artist Kevin Atherton made a plaster cast of a synchronised swimmer for his eye-catching sculpture.
In 1981 developer Peter Jones approached the borough with a proposal to redevelop three-quarters of the site into a golf course and public park and a 100-acre science park. This plan represented an important partnership between the public and private sectors.

From Plan to Action
The Stockley Park plan ran into difficulties casting doubt on implementation of the project.
Stuart Lipton, then chair of Stanhope Properties, saw the potential the site afforded and created Stockley PLC to salvage the Stockley Park plan.
In 1984, Stockley PLC received permission from Hillingdon council planners and the Department of the Environment to proceed.
The huge reclamation effort at Stockley Park was more than just an immense exercise in earth moving. It successfully addressed the problem of soil pollution and through various innovative systems, including the release of 1.5 million earthworms on site to improve soil quality, spectacular results have been achieved and the site generates virtually no adverse environmental impacts.
Construction
Construction of Phase 1 started in 1985 and Phase 2 in 1990 and archaeological excavations during these times uncovered bronze and iron age structures comprising four circular huts and associated granaries, along with weaving equipment and evidence of industry in metal slag.
