2019 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay
Submission Deadline: March 1, 2019
Sponsored by: Foundation for the
Preservation of Honey Bees 2019 Essay
Topic: Honey Varietals, State to State
Each jar of honey reflects an
unrepeatable combination of climate,
soil, weather and flowers. Each state
has unique honey varietals that
beekeepers can market to their
customers. Please identify one unique
varietal to your state and discuss the
flower’s uniqueness and how
beekeepers can effectively market that
varietal.
In your essay, please include a photo
of the varietal’s flower, an interview
with a local beekeeper who collects
this varietal and a recipe that
highlights the varietal.
Put on Your Thinking Cap!
An essential judging criterion is the
scope of research you put forth in
developing the ideas behind your
essay—accounting for 40% of your
score. The number of sources
consulted, the authority of the sources
and the variety of the sources are all
evaluated. Personal interviews with
beekeepers and others familiar with
the subject are valued sources of
information and should be
documented.
Note that “honey bee” is properly
spelled as two words, even though
many otherwise authoritative
references spell it as one word.
Eligibility:

Essay Competition is open to active 4-H

The Perfect Pie Crust
Ingredients:
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) very
cold unsalted butter
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1/3 cup very cold vegetable
shortening
6 to 8 tablespoons (about 1/2 cup)
ice water
Instructions:
Dice the butter and return it to the
refrigerator while you prepare the flour
mixture. Place the flour, salt, and sugar
in the bowl of a food processor fitted
with a steel blade and pulse a few times
to mix. Add the butter and shortening.
Pulse 8 to 12 times, until the butter is
the size of peas. With the machine
running, pour the ice water down the
feed tube and pulse the machine until
the dough begins to form a ball. Dump
out on a floured board and roll into a
ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and
refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Cut the dough in half. Roll each piece on
a well-floured board into a circle, rolling
from the center to the edge, turning and
flouring the dough to make sure it
doesn't stick to the board.
Fill as desired and bake.

2018-19 Shooting Sports Season
The 2018-19 Oregon 4-H Shooting
Sports Mail-In Tournament Season
will kick off with Archery in
November. All the other disciplines
will start in January. By using the
shooting sports disciplines to teach
valuable life skills, youth are set up
for success. While competition is a
part of that process, it is not the
whole process. The foundation of 4-H
Shooting Sports is positive youth
development. Education comes first,
followed by recreation, and then
competition. In the Mail-In
Tournament, as in all 4-H activities, it
is about the youth first and then the
project. 4-H shooting sports promote
and enhance life competencies that
make our community’s youngest
citizens open to challenge and
discovery, feel they have a sense of
purpose, affirm the importance of
something greater than themselves,
accept personal responsibility, feel
positive and optimistic, and be able
to set and achieve realistic goals.
Youth in 4-H Shooting Sports are on a
trajectory to do better in school,
make healthy choices, be socially
competent, develop personal
standards, connect and contribute to

We have also added Poultry/Pigeon
Bowl and Rabbit/Cavy Bowl. For
those not familiar with how bowls
work, they are similar to the game
show Jeopardy. Youth are asked
questions relating to their project
area and receive paints for correct
answers and lose points for incorrect
answers.
The judging contest will be slightly
different then we have done in the
past. Poultry will have a judging
contest and Poultry and Pigeon will
have a bowl. Rabbit and Cavy will
have a judging contest and bowl.
During the judging contest for poultry,
youth will judge eggs, poultry, and ID
poultry parts. The Poultry/Pigeon
bowl will pull questions from 4-H
Market Broiler, the National 4-H
Poultry Judging, 4-H Pigeon and Dove
project book, the Poultry Project book,
and the 4-H Poultry Showmanship
book.
The judging contest for Rabbits and
Cavy will be similar to what we have
done in the past, except there will not
be questions on Poultry or Pigeons.
The Rabbit/Cavy bowl will pull
questions from the Rabbit project
book and the cavy project book.
Small animal judging and bowls will be
held on Saturday, February 9th.
New this year at the State Level: Small
animal has been added to the Spring
Classic. This means that the top 4
Intermediates and top 4 Seniors, in
each of the contest, will be eligible to
compete at the state contest. This
year Spring Classic will be held in
Redmond.
What’s New in Dog!
This year we will be making some

Dog Program.

also added a new contest this year, Dog

questions relating to Dog and they
receive points for correct answers and
lose points for incorrect answers.

17 DESCHUTES COUNTY 4-H PROGRAM
At its simplest, livestock judging
consists of two parts:
Placing a group of animals
The placing of a class lets you place the
animals in order of your idea of how
they compare to the perfect, letting
you prioritize and strategize as to the
final placing of the animals.
2) Orally justifying your decision
Oral reasons, often causes more
anxiety. But, if you are prepared,
reasons are an exciting chance to share
your thoughts and priorities with an
expert, allowing him to judge your
reasons.
Livestock judging has the additional
benefits of teaching you about
decision making, public speaking and
self-confidence.
Building skills will help you in every
other area of your life, now and in the
future. Plus, you will have the
opportunity to meet industry leaders
as well as others, like yourself, that are
tomorrows industry leaders.

The Deschutes County Livestock Judging
Teams are looking for new members of
all 4-H levels! Anyone with interest
should please contact Kim Griffiths at

The Judging Team is having its next
meeting November 24, 2018 at the
extension office from 12 -2pm. Anyone
with any interest in learning about
judging should plan to attend.
We will be having Mari Palacio as a
guest speaker. Mari Palacio grew up in
Bend, Oregon, where she developed an
appreciation for the show ring, animal
nutrition and junior programs through
exhibiting horses and pigs.
She relocated to Oklahoma for college
and judged livestock at both Redlands
Community College and Oklahoma State
University, earning many national
accolades throughout her career.
The goal of livestock judging is to
compare your idea of an animal against
the “Perfect” and then to compare your
opinion with others. The idea of the
“perfect” animal is constantly changing
making livestock judging a fun
challenge.
