Appendix E

Format of Play

Medal

A stoke play game over a specified number of holes (usually 18). Each player must hole out at every hole. The total number of shots over the round is added together to give a gross score. The net score is derived by taking the players playing handicap from the gross score.

Stableford

A stroke play event where points are awarded on against the players net score on each hole, the point being awarded as follows:

Net score more than one over par for the hole - 0 points Net score one over par for the hole - 1 point

Net score equal to par for the hole - 2 points Net score one below for the hole - 3 points Net score two below par for the hole - 4 points And so on

When a player is unable to score any points on a particular hole, they may pick up their ball without penalty and proceed to the next hole. The golf club encourages this practice in these types of event to assist in the overall speed of play.

Match Play - Singles

Two players compete against each other over a stipulated number of holes (normally 18). The player who holes their ball in the fewest strokes wins the hole. In a handicap match the lower net score wins the hole. The reckoning of holes is kept by the terms: so many "holes up", "holes down" or all square. The player who wins the greatest number of holes will be the winner or, if a player is more holes up than there is left to play that player is the winner. In a handicap match play competition, the shots received by the higher handicap player is the difference between the higher handicap player and the lower player multiplied by the allowance for the competition, with part shot of 0.5 and above being rounded up, and part shots below 0.5 being rounded down. E.G. handicap of 24 playing handicap of 8 with full allowance = 24 - 8 =16 x 1 = 16 shots received. E.G. handicap of 19 playing handicap of 8 with ¾ allowance = 19 - 8 =11 x ¾ = 8.25 = 8 shots received.

Match Play - Four Ball Better Ball

As above but two players compete as a team against another two players. All players play each hole using their own ball. A hole is won when one team member has fewer net strokes than any of the two players competing against his team. In a handicap match play competition, the shots received by each of the higher handicap player is the difference between each higher handicap player and the lower player multiplied by the allowance for the competition, with part shot of 0.5 and above being rounded up, and part shots below 0.5 being rounded down.

Foursomes

A game where two players use one ball and play alternate shots. They must also take alternate drives, one team player teeing off from the odd numbered holes, and the other partner teeing off from the even numbered holes. This format can be used for match play and stroke play events.

Greensomes

A game where two players play as a team. On each hole, they both drive. They then select the best drive and continue play with this ball only. They will play alternate shots from here on in until the hole is completed. The player whose ball was picked up must play the second shot. This format can be used for match play and stroke play events.

Page 90: Overstone Park Golf Club Competitions Manualoverstoneparkgcseniors.co.uk/Comps Manual November 2018.pdf · 37 78 Seniors Singles Knockout 38 80 Social Cup 15 38 Stewart Wright Salver

Texas Scramble - (see also appendix H)

Normally a team of three or four players play together. Each player will drive. The team will select the best drive. All players will then play a second shot from the position of the best drive. The best second shot will be selected and all players will play a third shot from that position. This process continues until the ball is holed out. Once a ball is holed out the score with that ball counts for the score for that hole. Each player must take a minimum of four drives.

Eclectic

A player submits a card with a gross score for each hole. In subsequent rounds where a player improves their gross score on an individual hole then the better score will count as their eclectic score for that hole. The Competitions Committee will stipulate the maximum number of cards a player can submit.

Texas and Florida Scramble Rules

TEES: Tees - White Tees for men, Red Tees for ladies (If the White Tees have been removed for the winter men, will play from the Yellow Tees.)

HANDICAP CALCULATION: Add 4 playing handicaps together and divide total by 8 to the nearest 0.1

Teams of 3, add the 3 playing handicaps plus the average handicap of player D entries, as calculated during the draw, divide total by 8 to the nearest 0.1 White Tee Scramble - any team consisting of a lady player(s), should add 1 stroke per lady player before dividing the total by 8 Yellow Tee Scramble – any team consisting of a lady player(s), should add 2 strokes per lady player before dividing the total by 8 All team handicaps will be subject to an over-riding maximum handicap of 10.0

DRIVES: Each player must have a minimum of 4 drives selected. Teams of 3 must have a minimum of 5 drives selected.

Score cards must show which player’s drive was taken on each hole.

Please write this in the markers column on the scorecard.

SELECTED SHOT: Texas Scramble - The selected ball must be marked and played first as it lies or if preferred lies apply it may be placed within 6 inches of its position no nearer the hole

Florida Scramble - The player whose ball is selected cannot take the next shot The remaining balls to be played as follows: On the fairway

To be dropped within 1 club length no nearer the hole. Balls may then be placed within 6 inches if “preferred lies” apply. A ball dropped on the fairway running into the rough must be re-dropped onto the fairway. To speed up play if "preferred lies" apply then the ball may be placed within 6 inches of the marked position no nearer the hole

In the rough Remaining players must drop in the rough as near to the

marker as possible but within 1 club length no nearer the hole. A ball dropped in the rough landing on the fairway must be re-dropped in the rough.

In a hazard Remaining players may place the ball within 6 inches.

ON THE GREEN: Chosen ball to played first, subsequent balls to be played from

within 6 inches of marker, not nearer the hole. Partners may watch the line of a putt from the opposite side of the hole to the player, but not from behind the player.

16:57 20/11/18 Competitions Manual 2018 Page 95 of 104

SCORECARD: One team card only. All players’ names and handicaps must be

entered. Scorecards must show which player’s drive was taken on each hole.

END OF ROUND: Two players to sign the scorecard which must be given to the duty committee member immediately after the end of the round.

Teams with only 3 players may take an extra shot after each of the team have played i.e. player ‘A’ plays his tee shot followed by the other team players (‘B’, ‘C’). Player ‘A’ then plays a shot for the missing player ‘D’ On playing the 2nd shot to the green the 1st player to play would again take the 4th shot thus allowing all the team to have the same number of shots as teams of 4. On arriving at the green the same again happens with the 1st player taking the first and last putt to make up for player ‘D’.

No Shows / Discontinuance of Play / Failure to Return Scorecard on Completion of Round

Player Fails to Turn Up & Play Monthly Medals If a player enters a drawn or undrawn monthly medal competition and fails to turn up to play without prior notification or cancellation (within half an hour of their stipulated tee time), contact telephone numbers below. The player will be disqualified and banned from entering any midweek and monthly medals for a period of one month and a day, which must include banning from the next midweek and monthly medal. If a player changes his tee time in a drawn medal, he will be given one warning. A repeat will result in disqualification and banned from entering any midweek and monthly medals for a period of one month and a day.

Other Major Club Competitions excluding Medals If a player enters ‘other major club competitions’ and fails to turn up to play without prior notification or cancellation (within half an hour of their stipulated tee time), contact telephone numbers below. The player will be disqualified and banned from entering all club competitions for a period of one month and a day.

Failure to Return Card on Completion of Round If a player enters a drawn or undrawn medal competition or a Stableford competition and fails to return their score card (whether completed or not), the player will be disqualified and banned from entering any midweek and monthly medals and any Stableford competition for a period of one month and a day, which must include banning from the next midweek and monthly medal, Members who continually fail in their obligations and responsibilities to return a scorecard on completion of the round, causing inconvenience to the handicap committee, in Qualifying Competitions, whether complete or not, may be invited to explain their reasons to the Competitions Committee.

Procedure for Notifying the Duty Member of Non-Attendance If for any reason, you will not be able to play in a competition, you must notify the club shop or duty member at least half an hour before your tee time or by 8.15 am for a Texas scramble. This will allow the duty member time to re-organize the draw as necessary. Telephone Numbers Club Shop 01604 643555 Reception 01604 647666

Discontinuance of Play If a player discontinues play without good reason (as indicated in rule 6-8a) in any competition, the player will be disqualified and banned from playing in all qualifying and other club competitions for a period of one month and 1 day. Bad weather in itself does not constitute good reason for discontinuance of play. If at any time a klaxon is sounded indicating a lightning storm, mark your ball and leave the course as soon as possible. At all times a common-sense approach will be adopted towards bad weather by the club shop.

Appeal Procedure If you have received a letter from the Competitions Committee or Club Secretary informing you of a ban, you have the right to appeal. The letter of appeal must be received by one of the above as soon as possible, but within 7 days. The person receiving the appeal letter will then contact two members of the competitions committee who will each vote on whether to uphold or terminate the ban based on the evidence received, if it is found later that the information received was incorrect then the original ban will be enforced as soon as possible. If any committee makes a decision, which is then appealed against, the appeal must be referred to that committee for further discussion. In the cases identified above, the player will be informed in writing, which will specify the exact dates of the ban.

Seeded Draw Procedure If any competition requires a seeded draw, the draw should be made by following the procedure below: Calculate the number of tees positions required, for teams of four the number of entrants divided by four rounded up. List all entrants including ladies and juniors in descending handicap order. Divide this list into groups (or categories) equalling the number of tees required. e.g. if the number of tees required is 26 split the entrants into the first 26 lowest handicaps - category 1, the 26 next lowest handicaps - category 2, and so on to produce 4 categories. From Category 1 draw the places for each tee, and then draw from Category 2 for the second positions from the tee etc. and so on for each category. If possible when making the draw, try to separate family members playing together and to place only one lady member or junior in each four ball. Certain tee positions should be reserved for personnel on registration and marking cards e.g.1

st, 10

th, and 16th. These people

usually maximum of 3 needs to get to and from the tee promptly. These personnel should be slotted into their appropriate category when making the draw. This continues until all players have been drawn. The positions to be used when more than 18 are required are as follows: 3rd Fairway, 6th Fairway, 7th Fairway, 9th Fairway, 10th Fairway, 11th Fairway, 14th Fairway, 15th Fairway, 18th Fairway.
