Page 33: Overview of Previous Year

Accomplishments

Findings/Issues Addressed

• Geospatial Education at Community Colleges is Regional

• Most regions are characterized by community colleges with no geospatial education

• Future research needs to connect, map, and assess the location of GST workers ▫ New DOL Codes for the Geospatial Industry▫ This research is critical in assessing expansion

or creating new GST curriculum

Publication: Mapping Geospatial Education at Community and Technical Colleges - Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA)

Page 34: Overview of Previous Year

Accomplishments

• Instructor contact information for colleges with GST certificates and degrees (around 170 colleges)▫ Name, Program Website URL, E-mail, Phone Number

• Added new university layer▫ Pilot Study on California

Page 35: Overview of Previous Year

Planned Activities• Validating the accuracy of the GST college database

• In progress through surveys, e-mail, and phone calls to college• Tracking when and who we contact in GDB• New attributes: remote sensing, GPS, and online

• Researching contact information for the schools with courses only• 300 (In Progress) Name of Instructor, E-mail, Programming

Department • 50% Complete

Page 36: Overview of Previous Year

Outreach and Growth – Discussion

• How do we use the national community college map to better serve the geospatial education and technician movement within the nation’s community colleges?

• Who will use the map? For what purposes? • Using the map as a social network linking educators, students,

and employers• Using the map to disseminate GTCM Profiles for schools• Disseminate the map to research and broader ATE community • Others

Page 37: Overview of Previous Year

• Connecting the GST industry and students ▫ Allow students or programs to

upload a skill set profile to GeoTech Community College Map

▫ Use the map through geographic or attribute queries to assist both students or employers in finding workers/programs marketing the target skill sets required for a specific job.
