OVERVIEW OF THE CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES The Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women which has been serving untiringly for the cause of women’s education for more than five decades has added one more feather in its cap of achievements through the inception of the CENTRE FOR WOMEN’S STUDIES. The CENTRE functions under the able leadership of Padma Bhushan Awardee Mr. Moosa Raza I.A.S (Retd.), Chairman, S.I.E.Trust, Mr. Faizur Rahman Sayeed LL.B, (Canada) Correspondent and Secretary,J.B.A.S College for Women,Justice G.M. Akbar Ali Advisor, SIE Trust and Dr. (Mrs) Shanaz Ahmed, M.Sc.M.Phil.,PhD, Principal, J.B.A.S College for Women. The Centre for Women’s Studies of J.B.A.S College for Women, (Autonomous) Teynampet, Chennai was established in September 2005 with the financial assistance of the University Grants Commission, (U.G.C) New Delhi under the X Plan. It has now successfully completed eleven years. The Centre has the distinction of being the first UGC sponsored Centre among the Colleges in the Chennai City. The objectives of the Centre are Teaching, Training, Research and Advocacy. The Centre has continuously expanded its scope and creatively responding to the needs of staff, students and women of Chennai city. The Centre for Women’s Studies has constituted an Advisory Committee consisting of the Padma Bhushan Awardee Mr. Moosa Raza I.A.S (Retd.), Chairman, S.I.E.Trust, Dr. (Mrs) Shanaz Ahmed, M.Sc.M.Phil.,PhD, Principal, J.B.A.S College for Women, Prof. Eugienie Pinto, Former Member, T.N State Commission for Women, Padmasri. Dr. (Mrs) Jaya Arunachalam, President, Working Women’s Forum (India) and Dr. B.Madhana Rekha M.A,M.Phil,Ph.D, Former Director, Centre for Women’s Studies. Dr. S.Jameela M.A,M.Phil,Ph.D is the Director of the Centre . She has 19 years of Teaching experience and Research experience. She has participated and presented several papers in the National and International level Seminars / Conferences. The Centre for Women’s Studies has conducted the following collaborative projects for the Government of India. 1. Integrating Support Services with the Family Courts in India: An Action Research sponsored by the National Institute of Public Co-operation for Child Development, New Delhi. 2. A Comparative Study of the Status of Banares Weavers and Kancheepuram Weavers of Tamil

Dr. S.Jameela M.A,M.Phil,Ph.D is the Director of the Centre . She has 19 years of

Teaching experience and Research experience. She has participated and presented several

papers in the National and International level Seminars / Conferences.

The Centre for Women’s Studies has conducted the following collaborative projects for the

Government of India.

(NCEUS), New Delhi and the Working Women’s Forum (WWF), India.

The Centre for Women’s Studies has also completed three research studies (Funded by the

National Commission for Women, New Delhi )

1. Measures to control the menace of Domestic Violence Against Women in India.

2. A Comparative Study of Self Help Groups in India.

3. Property Rights of Women in Tamil Nadu.

Two Non-Major Elective Papers:

The Centre offers Two Non-Major Elective Papers entitled, “An Introduction to Women’s Studies”

and “Women and Legal Rights” for the Students of the Forenoon College.

Fulfillment of the programme:

Students from various disciplines had opted for the following papers:

(a) “An Introduction to Women’s Studies” and

(b) “Women and Legal Rights”

PROGRAMMES ORGANIZED:

The Centre organizes several Workshops, Seminars, and Training Programmes to create

awareness to the Staff and Students about Gender issues and the Constitutional Rights available

for Women.

RESEARCH:

National Commission for Women, New Delhi sponsored Research Studies:

The National Commission for Women, New Delhi had sanctioned Rupees Ten Lakhs One

Thousand and Seven Hundred Only to conduct the following Three Research Studies,during

2013-14

1. “Measures to control the menace of Domestic Violence Against Women in India”

2. “A Comparative Study of Self Help Groups in India”

3. “Property Rights of Women in Tamil Nadu”

ADVOCACY:

The Centre involves in conducting several extension programmes to educate the Public, Staff and

Students on Women Issues, Government Legislations, Policies and Programmes for the

development of women, the Constitutional guarantees available for Women and the measures to

tackle the day today problems faced by women.

The College Management has allocated a separate room at the Golden Jubilee Block for the

Centre for Women’s Studies and has provided good infrastructure and equipments for its smooth

functioning.
