OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION

Title: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Business Ephemera: Religion

Date: ca. 1728-1950

Extent: 2.66 cubic feet and 6 folders of oversized materials

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists primarily of books, periodicals, and other publications; ephemera such

as programs, service leaflets, announcements, invitations, reports, circulars, letters, cards; and

images, including photographs, engravings and color illustrations. This material relates to the

promotion of religious education, religious organizations, and the dissemination of a great

variety of religious viewpoints. A substantial amount of colorful printed material is present;

especially in card form; a small amount of foreign material is also included. Virtually all of this

material is from the North Eastern United States. The researcher may wish to consult “Churches”

in the Warshaw Collection; it contains closely related materials.

This material is divided into twelve series:

SERIES 1: Religious Education: ca. 1838-1950

Series One includes materials for the use of a variety of institutions devoted to the teaching of

religious ideas and Bible study. Most of these seem to be unaffiliated with a particular church or

denomination. They are arranged alphabetically in the following subseries:

Subseries 1A: Sunday Schools: ca. 1858-1900. Letters, certificates, programs, service

leaflets, announcements, invitations, reports, convention materials and tracts.

Subseries 2A: Theological and Bible Schools: 1838-1930. Circulars, publications,

service leaflets, and letters.

Subseries 3A: Sunday School and Bible Lessons: 1856-1922. Arranged by title; some

are in periodical form.

SERIES 2: Religious Organizations, Charities, and Missions: ca. 1817-1925

Series Two includes booklets, letters, circulars, programs, and announcements arranged

alphabetically by name of organization. These groups engaged in a variety of charitable,

evangelical and educational activities.

Subseries 3C: Spiritualists and Spiritualism: ca. 1850-1904. Cards and announce-

ments for individual practitioners and organizations promoting Spiritualism, arranged by

name. Publications about Spiritualism, arranged by title.

SERIES 4: General Religious Books and Booklets: ca. 1791-1933

Series Four contains publications relating to a variety of religious opinions and ideas. Some

relate to theological controversies, some are published sermons and addresses, the great majority

are non-denominational. These are arranged by title; author and date are listed where available.

SERIES 5: Christian Science Books and Booklets: ca. 1890-1917

Series Five contains publications relating to Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist)

theology and practice. Some of these are critical of Christian Science. They are arranged by title;

author and date are listed where available.

SERIES 6: Religious Periodicals: ca. 1811-1941

Series Six contains copies of magazines and newspapers devoted to religious subjects and

activities. They are arranged alphabetically by title, with date of publication, if known.

SERIES 7: Publishers of Religious Books and Periodicals: ca. 1847-1950 Series Seven contains business materials related to the publishers of religious materials.

These include circulars, receipts, subscription information, letters and catalogues. No copies of

the publications are in this series.

SERIES 8: Religious Poems and Hymns: ca. 1870-1910

Series Eight contains small booklets; most are undated. Many of these items are prettily

illustrated and may have been used as greeting cards, small gifts, or keepsakes. They are

arranged alphabetically by title. Also included is a group of loose pages bearing poems or hymn

lyrics.

SERIES 9: Religious Tracts, Articles and Leaflets: ca. 1830-1930

Series Nine contains numerous small religious booklets, known as “tracts”, printed for

distribution at small or no cost. Also included are published articles and leaflets; some of these

relate to religious controversies. The materials are arranged as: Religious Tracts, United States;

Religious Tracts, United Kingdom; and Religious Articles and Leaflets.

SERIES 10: RELIGIOUS CARDS: ca 1860-1030

Series Ten contains cards bearing Biblical or other religious texts and/or images. The first two

folders contain a group of postcards and a series of views of the Holy Land. The bulk of the

material follows these and is organized into categories: Bible Lesson Cards, Religious Poetry

Cards, Scripture Cards, and Miscellaneous Religious Cards.

SERIES 11: Religious Images: ca 1800-1900

Series Eleven contains a variety of images arranged as follows: Illustrations of Biblical Scenes;

Portraits of Clergy, Engravings and Photographs; Religious Artworks; and Miscellaneous

Religious Images.
