Mission of the Imaging Consortium

10

• Expand imaging in clincial research– To build infrastructure

• Provide expert consultation and guidance to CTSC participants in the use of imaging as part of clinical translational research

• IT framework

• Educate and advise Harvard and the Affiliated Academic Health Centers about available imaging, techniques, capabilities and image processing capabilities in the Harvard environment.

Technologies and Expertise

13

• Cancer imaging, MRI, PET, CT, fMRI, pediatric imaging, neuroimaging.

• Focused on assisting with planning and design of research proposals and/or methods for image analysis.

• Consultation is available for the preparation of a grant or IRB submission.

• We do not provide ongoing support for the implementation of new studies or the analysis of data from existing studies.

Imaging Consultation Service

14

• Investigator fill webform on Catalyst website– Name, institution, nature research, reason for consult

• Medical Imaging Liaison – dispatches request to the imaging consortium– Follow-up with investigator

• Consultations discussed weekly• Designated consultant contacts investigator

Becoming an Imaging Consultant

15

• Potential benefits of being an active collaborator:– Good framework for research– Research opportunities through collaborations– Meeting experts out of radiology– Networking with imaging cores outside of Boston

• Examples: – Standardization of physiologic monitoring system for fMRI– Development lingual nerve imaging (MGH-BIDMC)– Study of brain-development in premature infants (CHB-BWH-

MGH)– Liver inflammation– Cardiac conductivity study

Page 16: Overview of the Harvard Catalyst Imaging program ClareTempany, MD; Ron Kikinis, MD; Valerie Humblet, PhD April 9, 2009

Educational Opportunities proposal

16

• Nanocourse: – Imaging 101 to increase knowledge about imaging

• More advanced classes for radiologists:– Tumor metrics– Radiation safety issues for IRB submission– Hands-on classes on data analysis– Imaging perfusion– Example: www.na-mic.org/Wiki/images/8/8b/Slicer3Training_ChangeTracker.ppt

XNAT-PACS-i2b2 Integration

17

• IT Catalyst infrastructure:– i2b2: scalable computational framework to help

translation of genomic findings. – BIRN: XNAT imaging informatics platform: large

collections of images and study-specific metadata to be managed by image-driven clinical translational research groups.

– NA-MIC:robust, open source solutions for medical image analysis, visualization and management software tools by the creation of a “desktop” version of XNAT. Key image analysis software tools: slicer. Freesurfer.
