Overview of USTCOverview of USTC
USTC was established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958, and is the only university affiliated to CAS.
Moved to Hefei, Anhui, in 1970. Hefei is about 3 hours’ train ride to Shanghai.
USTC History and Location
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is a leading academic institution and comprehensive research and development center in natural science, technological science and high-tech innovation in China. USTC is part of CAS.
CAS comprises 103 institutes with legal entity, more than 100 national key laboratories and national engineering research centers, and about 1,000 field stations throughout the country. Its staff even surpassed 50,000.
The schools and departments of USTC are directly linked to at least one of the CAS institutes.
Most of the leadership of the schools of USTC are undertaken by directors of the CAS institutes.

— President Hu Jintao’s Congratulatory Letter to USTC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
Mission
• President Hu hopes that USTC will become a world-class research university for educating more and better innovative talents.
1. Emphasize quality rather than quantity2. Focus on forefront areas of science and
technology, including science and technology based management
3. Combine education with research
To educate top leaders in science and technology for China To educate top leaders in science and technology for China and the world.and the world.
Strategy
Mission Statement
70% of the undergraduates continue to pursue post-graduate study home and abroad every year. Nearly 30 % of the undergraduates are admitted with full scholarship for graduate study by overseas universities.
42 graduates (1 ‰) have been elected to CAS or CAE, highest ratio among Chinese universities.
Over 10,000 alumni are working or studying outside China, mostly in northern America.

Education
Enrollment to USTC is extremely selective, for only top 3-5 ‰ of the high school graduates are admitted.
Students receive solid training in mathematics and physics.
USTC is regarded in China as “The Cradle of Scientific Elites.”
Two teams from USTC won two gold medals and an award of Best Software Tool in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (IGEM) competition on November 9, 2010. USTC was the only university in the world awarded two gold medals in this competition, maintaining the record of the most gold medals. USTC teams achieved the best performance in Greater China.

Research
All the disciplines in science at USTC are rated A level.
USTC is the only university in China that has two national laboratories on campus: National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Micro
Scale (HFNL)
Successful rate of research proposals to NSF of China exceeds 45%, the highest among the Chinese universities.
Citations per faculty at USTC In the past ten years are 9.23, the highest among Chinese universities.
USTC is a vital base in China for science and technology
innovation.
National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory
NSRL is the first dedicated synchrotron radiation facility in China, which locates on the West Campus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), in Hefei, Anhui Province.
NSRL is one of the key issues of China’s investments on large-scale scientific research facilities. Its construction began on Nov. 20, 1984, and completed with a national review in Dec. 1991. In order to make effective use of the facility, with an investment of 118 million RMB, the Phase II Project of NSRL was carried out in 1999 and passed the national quality evaluation in Dec. 2004.
Hefei National Laboratory of Physical Sciences
Found in 2003, Hefei National Laboratory of Physical Sciences at the Microscale (HFNL) is located on the campus of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), under contract with the Ministry of Science and Technology and CAS.
At HFNL, major focus is placed on areas of nano-science, information technology, biological science and cognitive science. HFNL is currently composed of seven divisions, including Division of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Division of Nano-materials and Nano-chemistry, Division of Low-dimensional Physics and Chemistry, Division of Quantum Physics and Quantum Information, Division of Structure and Function of Biomacromolecules, Division of Bio-X interdisciplinarySciences, Division of Theoretical and Computational Sciences and Division of Public Technical Services.
High Magnetic Field Laboratory, CAS High Magnetic Field Laboratory (HMFL)
jointly built by CAS and USTC, was founded on April 30th, 2008 in Hefei city. HMFL was founded to provide first class steady high magnetic field facilities to researchers and to better develop high magnetic field science.
HMFL focuses on three missions: 1. Establish a wide range of user facilities and services for magnet-
related research at the frontiers of science. These facilities are open to all qualified scientists and engineers.
2. Develop multidisciplinary researches, including physics, chemistry, biology, material.
3. Advance magnet-related technology; stimulate invention and creation in the high magnetic fields.
