‘Golden Age’ of Petworth – 3rd Earl is patron to JMW Turner and a host of contemporary British artists
3rd Earl’s son inherits all but the title, due to his illegitimacy. He is created 1st Lord Leconfield 22 years later
3rd Lord Leconfield gives Petworth to the National Trust in 1947
In the 1950s John Wyndham negotiates the further gift of a large part of Petworth’s art collection in lieu of inheritance tax – the first ever instance of such a gift
Lord and Lady Egremont work closely with the National Trust to reflect Petworth’s ‘Golden Age’ in its displays.
