Over a third of the way into the season…
Well the uncomfortable weather that we so often identify with football has started to seep in. And with that, we are now seeing the first of what will no doubt be many result upsets in football and netball. I must say it pleases me immensely to watch our sport and see the competitiveness amongst all competitions and divisions. Divisional football continues to allow our clubs to find their appropriate competitive place in a sustainable way. Being competitive has so many positive flow on affects for our clubs – sponsorship, bar and canteen sales, function attendance, player subscriptions being paid up, match attendance, the list goes on.
In an exciting blast from the past, imminent 2017 SFNL Hall of Fame inductee Daryl Pitman, re-joined the SFNL and 88.3 Southern FM radio Match of the Day broadcast team last Saturday. Those that have been involved with the SFNL for some years will remember Daryl and his team did a sensational job for many years looking after all things media for the then Southern Football League. From all reports from our broadcast team, it was a wonderful opportunity to work alongside this great talent and to also share broadcasting techniques amongst each other.
While on the topic of our community radio partner 88.3 Southern FM, they are in an interesting transition period at the present. Commonwealth
Government grant money received by 88.3 Southern FM formed a large percentage of its income, being more than 50%. The current Government recently made the decision to axe the grants program altogether.
88.3 Southern FM are now exploring different revenue streams to fill the void left by the withdrawn grant funding. The SFNL obviously want them to stay on air and at the same time do not want to see our air time fees increased which can result in an increase to our member club fees.
The reality is that unless 88.3 Southern FM are successful with alternative fundraising efforts, the station will need to significantly increase fees or the alternative, won’t be able to continue on air due to an eventual lack of funds sometime in the future.
88.3 Southern FM has been a strong supporter of sport in our local community and in particular the SFNL, since its inception in 1990 hence their appeal for support now.
One of 88.3 Southern FM’s fundraising efforts will be a Trivia Night to be held at the Sandown Greyhounds Function Centre, View Road, Springvale on Wednesday 12 July 2017 - 7.30pm.
The ticket price is $20.00 per person with drinks at bar prices and guests encouraged to bring their own snacks. Tickets can be purchased via https://www.trybooking.com/281353 so that a table(s) can be reserved for the night.
The SFNL encourage all our clubs and their members to get behind this important fundraising initiative, in a show of support for an important marketing and media product for your club and the SFNL.

DIVISION 2 RESULTS: ROUND 8
8 | SFNL RECORD 2017 SFNL.COM.AU | 9
Skye and Caulfield were the big winners in division two last week, with the Bears putting together perhaps their best performance of the season.
Skye 17.4 (106) def Keysborough 10.9 (69) The Burra were no match for the Bombers in what turned into a match of two halves, with Skye coming out on top by 37 points.
Ben Walker and Stephen Hawkins combined for nine goals while Jess Elms was best on ground in the win, which saw Skye turn around a nine-point half time lead with a 12-goal second half.
The start of the match was tightly contested with both sides booting four goals in the opening quarter, before two goals to Keysborough in the second quarter gave it the lead at half time.
Skye turned it on during the third term, booting six goals to three from Keysborough to take a nine-point lead into the final change, before adding another six goals to one in the final term to run away with the match.
Chris Bryan was a dangerous target inside 50 for the Burra, booting five goals in a best on ground effort.
East Brighton 13.6 (84) def Murrumbeena 7.9 (51) The Vampires maintained their grip on fifth spot on the ladder with a solid 33-point win against the Beena, spurred on by a six-goal final quarter.
Dylan Lowe and Peter Larsen combined for seven majors in the win, which saw East Brighton grind for three quarters, before pulling away during the final stanza.
Murrumbeena enjoyed a positive start to the match, kicking three goals to two in the opening term before East Brighton hit back with three goals to two in the second term, levelling the score.
The Vampires pulled away slightly during the third term, booting two goals to two behinds, before their six-goal haul in the final term was enough to secure an important victory.
Liam Wilson and Williem Voorham were the best for Murrumbeena.
Caulfield 18.12 (120) def Highett 10.6 (66) Caulfield put together its best performance of the year so far, stringing four quality quarters to seal a 54-point win against Highett.
Chris Dove was in dangerous form up forward, booting six goals while Andrew Mase was sensational in a best on ground effort.
The Bears got off on a strong foot with six straight goals in the opening term, before adding a further four to their tally to take a 33-point lead into the half time break.
Inaccuracy inside 50 crept in during the third quarter, as the Dogs reduced the margin to 28 points, before the Bears surged home with six goals to two in the final term to win by 54 points.
Sam Jackson and Tom Brown were named the best for Highett.
Hampton 8.11 (59) def Springvale Districts 8.7 (55) The Hammers held off a furious final quarter comeback from a gallant Districts outfit to come away with an important four-point win.
James Gascard and Liam Thornell each kicked two goals while Guy Timms and Luke Hayes were listed as their best players.
Four goals in the first term to Springvale gave it the early advantage, but Hampton was able to hit back in the second term, kicking two goals to two behinds to take a three-point lead at half time.
A further two goals in the third term gave Hampton some breathing room going into the final term, which saw the Hammers hold on for the narrow win, despite being outscored four goals to two.
Stefan Feehan was superb for the Districts, booting three goals in a best on ground effort.
Chelsea Heights 18.19 (127) def Heatherton 7.11 (53) The Chelsea Heights juggernaut continues to roll on as the boys from Beazley Reserve notched up their eighth win on the trot.
Phil Smith was sensational with nine goals in a best on ground performance while Joel Williams was also impressive.
The Heighters were in control right from the get go, booting four goals to one in the opening term, before adding another six goals to four in the second, building a 35-point buffer by half time.
Chelsea Heights added another four goals in the third term to put the game out of reach for the Tonners, with another four goals sealing a 74-point triumph.
Shaun Keenan and Aidan Nelson were named the best for Heatherton.
ROUND 9 PREVIEW
Round 9 presents several intriguing matchups and several teams could move up the ladder with wins.
Murrumbeena v Mount Waverley (Murrumbeena Park)
Game of the Week One of three possible game of the week choices, the Beena attempt to bounce back into form against a refreshed Mountain Lions side.
Murrumbeena has been in good form despite last week’s loss, and are always a tough ask when on its home deck.
Mount Waverley was also in good form before the bye and are a legit finals contender, win or lose.
Murrumbeena by three points.
Keysborough v East Brighton (Keysborough Reserve) Another strong candidate for game of the week sees the Burra looking to bounce back onto the winners list while the Vampires are in red hot form.
Keysborough showed positive signs in patches against Skye last week, but need to improve if it’s going to be a legitimate premiership contender.
East Brighton stamped itself as a legitimate finals contender with a win against Murrumbeena last week, and can further add to its stock season with a win on the road.
Keysborough by 22 points.
Hampton v Caulfield (Peterson Street Reserve) One of the more intriguing contests this weekend sees Hampton take on the Bears.
It might not seem like a big matchup, but both sides have had patchy form this season.
Hampton scraped across the line against Springvale District at home and will need to put together a stronger performance to beat the Bears.
Caulfield were highly impressive in its win against Highett, but was it the real deal or simply a flash in the pan?
Caulfield by 36 points.
Springvale Districts v Skye (Springvale Reserve) The Bombers flexed their muscles during their win last week and will be big favourites in this clash against the Districts.
Skye proved it is a top two side in the competition with a convincing win against Keysborough last week and for once, it wasn’t Stephen Hawkins leading the way, but none other than Ben Walker.
Springvale Districts nearly came away with an upset win against Hampton, and Stefan Feehan looms as an important player.
Skye by 34 points.
Highett v Chelsea Heights (Turner Road Reserve) Time is quickly running out for the Dogs’ finals chances and it does not get easier with the ladder leaders coming to town.
Highett was no match for the Bears in last week’s clash and will need to significantly improved if it’s to get close to Chelsea Heights.
The boys from Beazley Reserve are the best in the competition and should be able to comfortably win this one.
Chelsea Heights by 40 points.

ROUND 7 REVIEW
Endeavour Hills 8.8 (56) def by Ashwood 10.12 (72) As expected, it was a tight game between Ashwood and Endeavour Hills.
Chris Scully was best for the Magpies, with his three goals helping them to a 16-point win.
Reliable defender, Matt Maginnes was another standout for the winner.
Ashwood led at every break, but by just three points at half time and five at the final change.
Lyndale 16.7 (103) def Moorabbin 7.5 (47) Lyndale’s Trevor Kumetaitis and Taylor Rainey combined for 10 of the Pumas’ 16 goals.
Seven of those belonged to Kumetaitis.
Rainey was acknowledged as Lyndale’s best player in a 56-point win over Moorabbin.
The Pumas led at every break and held the Kangaroos scoreless in the final term.
Hallam 34.21 (225) def Dandenong 4.3 (27) Hallam skipped to a 26-point lead at quarter time against Dandenong.
After that it was carnage, with the Hawks slamming through 27 goals to one for the remainder of the afternoon.
The margin of victory for Hallam was 198 points.
Phil Ward was best on ground for the second week running and Steve Sigeti kicked nine goals.
Lyndhurst 6.5 (41) def by South Yarra 13.6 (84) Early goals to Charlie Gardiner and Ryan Lowe gave Lyndhurst a positive start against South Yarra.
Lightning held an 11-point advantage at quarter time.
The Yarras still trailed at the halfway stage, but overpowered Lyndhurst with ten second-half majors.
It was a 43-point victory to South Yarra, with the coach’s son Scott Stegehuis its best player.
Cory Brady was again productive with five of the Yarras’ majors.
Doveton Eagles 38.43 (271) def Sandown 0.1 (1) Six goals each to Russell Robertson, Corrie Wilson, and Travis Graeske headlined a 270-point Doveton win over Sandown.
Eagle Stuart Johnson was best afield.
Interestingly, despite its onfield predicament, Sandown is comfortably leading Doveton on the SFNL’s Best Conducted Club table.
This offers encouragement that the Cobras’ administration is working hard off the field to lay the foundations for a brighter future.
Sandown coach Ange Sammartino spoke to Leader’s Daryl Pitman about the onfield challenges ahead.
“We know it’s going to be a long 11 weeks but we are determined to give it our best and do some serious recruiting for next season,” Sammartino said.
He praised his players’ commitment to the club through this challenging period, but acknowledged depth is an issue and injuries have taken a toll.
For all that, Sammartino wasn’t satisfied with his team’s effort against the Eagles.
“We were not polished or committed enough today though, that’s for sure,” he told Pitman.
Carrum Patterson Lakes 10.7 (67) def by Black Rock 18.10 (118) Black Rock was cruising until just before half time, racing to a 59-point lead over CPL.
Aaron Guy sparked the previously listless Lions into action.
He booted a couple of goals, and Shaun Tantram snapped another for the Lions.
Still trailing by 39 points at the major break, this appeared to be a cosmetic repair, rather than the foundation of a Lions’ comeback.
When the players returned to the field CPL was inspired, laying tackles and winning contests around the ground.
As the clock ticked into time on in the third stanza, a Matt Jackson goal cut CPL’s deficit to just 15 points.
A fortunate free kick to Black Rock’s James Hooper stopped the rot for the Jets.
After he nailed the goal, Black Rock took charge for the rest of the contest.
The Jets won by 51 points, with Kristian Bliesner contributing four goals, and Andrew Luke named best player.
ROUND 8 PREVIEW
Ashwood vs Lyndale (Essex Heights Reserve) A couple of Division 3’s prolific goalkickers go head to head at Essex Heights Reserve.
Lyndale’s Trevor Kumetaitis has 30 majors to his name this season, 10 ahead of Ashwood’s Shane Peake.
It will be an entertaining match, but expect Ashwood to maintain its unbeaten record.
South Yarra vs Endeavour Hills (Fritsch Holzer Park) South Yarra sits fourth on the ladder, holding a percentage advantage over this week’s opponent Endeavour Hills.
The fifth-placed Falcons will feel in with a chance after making high-flying Ashwood work hard in Round 7.
The Yarras’ confidence will also be boosted after a comprehensive win over Lyndhurst.
Only a brave soul would tip against South Yarra at its fortress, and this isn’t the occasion for such bravado.
Dandenong vs Doveton Eagles (Greaves Reserve) Dandenong is yet to record a win in 2017 and it won’t alter that situation when it hosts a rampant Doveton outfit.
The Eagles showed no mercy against last-placed Sandown and will record another big percentage boost against the Redlegs.
Lyndhurst vs Sandown (Marriott Waters Reserve)
After a disappointing home loss, Lyndhurst will come out all guns blazing this week.
Lightning won’t encounter much resistance from Sandown.
Black Rock vs Hallam (MacDonald Reserve) Coach Jay Williams has guided his side to a couple of wins on the trot.
However, Hallam will test whether or not the Jets can revive their season.
Black Rock impressed with its ball movement last week in defeating CPL, but was vulnerable when the Lions lifted their intensity.
To upset Hallam, the Jets need to maintain a consistently high standard.
The Hawks will win due to their unrelenting pressure.
Moorabbin vs Carrum Patterson Lakes (Widdop Crescent Reserve) Moorabbin and Carrum Patterson Lakes are looking to the future.
The sides have managed just two wins each in 2017.
After an encouraging win over South Yarra, the Kangaroos have suffered three consecutive hidings.
CPL demonstrated in the third term of its clash with Black Rock that its best footy is noteworthy.
If the Lions start positively, they are a good chance to get the better of the Kangaroos.
DIVISION 3: MAN ON THE MARK / ANDREW PALOCZI @Apaloczi

THE DARYL PITMAN STORY / ANDREW PALOCZI
Never blessed with speed, and lightly built, Daryl Pitman wasn’t destined for footy beyond the local level.
Aptly, it was community footy to which he was drawn and to which he has richly contributed.
In inducting Pitman to the Hall of Fame, the SFNL acknowledges his vast contribution to the league.
SFNL media personality, Ian Dougherty, pays tribute to Pitman and the extent to which he has shaped the league’s current media environment.
“A pioneer of media in community football, and much of what we do in the media team today is a result of all your efforts early on,” he tells Pitman.
Hearing Pitman reminisce about the pioneering days as a Southern FM commentator makes you aware of a couple of realities.
One is the determination he and his fellow radio presenters had to get the match of the day to air, no matter the obstacles present.
Also evident is a level of risk unimaginable in today’s world of occupational health and safety.
Covering a final at Springvale, the broadcast team was perched in a box upon a scaffold, with water up to their ankles and electrical cables everywhere.
“We did it under some really testing and challenging conditions,” notes Pitman.
On other occasions, getting the game onto the airwaves relied on persuasion.
In those early times, a phone line was essential to deliver the commentary to the Southern FM studio. That sounds simple until you discover some clubs didn’t have phones.
Pitman recalls how neighbouring households were called into broadcasting service.
“We’d buy the owners a couple of bottles of wine for helping us out and we’d tie up their phone for three hours.”
Pitman’s association with Southern FM dates to the origins of the station in 1984.
Today’s match-day broadcasts are undoubtedly safer and more comfortable for the presenters, and technology has evolved.
But from those humble beginnings our league’s association with Southern FM continues 33 years later.
As Southern FM sports editor, Pitman produced a three-hour weekly program called Southern Sport.
In the winter months, that program included a segment devoted to the SESFL, a forerunner of the SFNL.
Southern Sport ran for a decade, by which stage the league was known as the SFL.
Pitman’s pioneering spirit encompassed other forms of media.
He was the producer and editor of the SFL Record from its foundation in 1992. This gave him freedom to shape the Record and to focus on promoting local footy.
Leader Newspaper sports editor, Russell Holmesby, got Pitman onboard from the start of the SFL days.
Pitman continues to cover the SFNL in the Leader.
Another medium into which Pitman drew the league was television.
The Southern Footy Show hit the screens of Channel 31 viewers in 1997, and it continued to tell the stories of the SFL, its clubs and people until the end of the 2008 season.
Pitman explains how this much-loved show evolved into The Local Footy Show.
“It transpired that AFL Victoria wasn’t keen on the leagues having their own shows.”
The Local Footy Show went beyond the single-league focus of The Southern Footy Show.
“If it was to do with local footy and it was to promote local footy, we’d do a story on it, regardless of what league it was in,” Pitman says.
But he points out the Southern League was always an important focus.
“We did quite a few Southern games and always did stories on what was happening in the Southern Footy League.”
Sadly, The Local Footy Show wrapped up at the end of the 2016 season, when the Federal Government decided to no longer grant Channel 31 space on the broadcast spectrum.
Pitman’s involvement in community footy and his love of the game began as a youngster in Victorian country town, Hamilton.
His family was strongly connected to the Hamilton Football Club where a number of them, including his father, played.
Later, a family move brought him to Melbourne and in 1965 he began playing with Caulfield in the Federal Football League, winning an Under 16s best and fairest a couple of years later.
At just 17, Pitman made his senior debut.
By age 24 and by then at East Malvern Football Club, his playing career was curtailed by an ongoing ankle injury, along with work and family commitments.
But that was never going to terminate his involvement with local footy.
As a child, a Christmas gift of a typewriter from his parents allowed him to combine his obsession with sport with an interest in writing.
Mock Sporting Globe articles resulted, admittedly modest at the start.
He practised his commentary skills, calling horse races in which the runners were marbles.
Since embarking on his media career, Pitman has received many accolades.
These include Life Membership of the SFNL, and receiving Outstanding Contribution to Community Television by an Individual at the Antenna Awards.
The Local Footy Show was twice named the Antenna Awards Outstanding Sports Program, with The Southern Footy Show once earning Channel 31’s Best Sports Show.
All these honours are important to Pitman, but there is a deeper significance to his induction into the SFNL Hall of Fame.
The letter advising him of this honour arrived just weeks after the loss of his wife Helen.
She was “always so encouraging” and worked hard behind the scenes.
Pitman credits her with achievements such as boosting the social media profile of The Local Footy Show.
“I consider it a very great honour, and I’m very sad that my wife’s not here to see it,” he says of his induction.

The SFNL’s community radio partner, 88.3 Southern FM, will host a Trivia Night at Sandown Greyhounds next month and are calling on members of the SFNL community to lend their support.
The Federal Government has recently made the decision to axe its community broadcasting grants program, the funding from which previously contributed to more than 50% of the Southern FM’s income.
As a result, the station, which has been of a long-time supporter of the SFNL, is looking to cover this revenue shortfall through alternative streams such as this Trivia Night, hence its appeal for support from the SFNL community.
Get a few members of your SFNL club together, enter a team of 10 and test your wits and knowledge against the experts. Tickets are just
$20pp, and there’ll be spot prizes on offer throughout the night as well as a major prize for the winning team.
The event promises to be fantastic night out for your club, so make sure you get down to the Sandown Greyhounds Function Centre and support the organisation that supports you.

Winter has arrived and with it the likelihood of lots of wet weather football. We need to modify our umpiring to adjust to the conditions if the ground is heavy. Break packs up quickly, watch out for players sliding in with their knees, and hold your whistle slightly at marking contests in case the ball spills out. With the ball slowing down in the mud, players are more likely to kick it off the ground - if a kick is likely to cause injury, pay kicking in danger. Protect the playing trying to pick the ball up - if a player is tackled front on, with his head over the ball, pay a free for a head-high tackle.
The increased body on body contact in the wet means that players are more likely to fire up - use a calm but firm voice at stoppages to keep things under control. The wet ball may not always travel 15 metres when kicked so be alert to calling play on, rather than paying a mark. In heavy conditions, the clubs may agree you use a yellow ball (with a waterproof coating) rather than a red one. They may also agree to rotate the footy each quarter so that they don’t get too heavy (don’t rotate after each half – the side kicking with the wind in quarters one and three then gets the benefit of a dry ball).
Make sure that you look the part. A change of gear at half-time, particularly in the seniors, makes you look much more professional. Wearing boots, rather than runners, will give you more confidence when running, and you won’t end up lying on your back in the mud!! Congratulations to Adam Bailes, Nick Ritchie and Brett Poll who umpired their first senior games last week.
After highlighting our two oldest (and most experienced) boundary umpires last week, this week we profile Brooke Foster, who is in her second year as an SFNL boundary. Brooke commenced her umpiring in the SMJFL because she loves footy and needed the money, and two games as a fieldie convinced her that running the boundary as more fun. She has an Under 16 SMJFL Grand Final on her CV already and is hoping to make it into the SFNL senior ranks this year. Brooke is a keen netballer, and an even keener Justin Beiber fan. When not umpiring, she can be seen running water for the Heatherton seniors.
Matthew Stratton is a young field umpire on the way up. Matt is in Year 10 at Sandringham College, and, after commencing his umpiring in the SMJFL, field umpired three SFNL Under 19 matches last year while still in Year 9, and has been a regular in that grade this year. The highlight of his career so far
was last Years Under 14 Div 1 Grand Final, but Matt is aiming for SFNL and even AFL Grand Finals before his career is over. Matt is also a keen basketballer and plays for Moorabbin Magic, and fits in time to play videogames when not at sport or school. Another young man making his mark is Jackson Groves-Koeleman who has a very busy weekend, umpiring with us on Saturdays and in the WRFL on Sunday mornings, as well as playing with Albion Under 15s on Sunday afternoons. He can claim that he is a VFL umpire having run some boundary gigs in the VFL Women’s competition last year.
Hannah Bailes’ trip away fundraising scheme (fines for distinguishing yourself in unfortunate ways) is already raking in the cash. Some of the more notable fines include Mitch Lea for leaving his wallet on his car roof and driving off (without the wallet!!), Anthony Steward for trying to start a match while his whistle was still in the umpires’ room, Erin Learmonth for changing the date of her 21st meaning that all the umpires she has invited need to choose between umpiring and partying (where is the White Knight’s invite, Abby?), and Marshy for every “quick chat” that isn’t quick. Scott Learmonth should pay double for announcing that “I don’t need red and yellow cards because I control my games”.
Our first social event of the year, an 80s-themed pizza night, is on Saturday June 24 at Bricker Reserve. Head on down back to the rooms after your games dressed in your best 80s get up and boogie to hits of the 80s. If your struggling for ideas about what to wear, just have a look at Marshie’s daily outfits). The $10 a head cost includes all the pizza you can eat. Please pay at the door upon arrival. You can RSVP on Facebook or by letting Bergs know at training.
Please remember to note anything “unforseen” from your match day on the Competition Match Report. Let’s help each other and improve the overall match day experience for all Umpires by recording any issues regarding the behaviour of officials, coaches, players or crowd, You should also report any use of the Green, Yellow or Red card and melees.
Report sheets are available to be collected from Bricker Reserve on any training night.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES
KEYSBOROUGHWe welcome East Brighton to our ground for the first time in what is a big clash between 4th & 5th on the senior ladder.
R & D Roofing Senior Report We ventured out to Skye for a clash that would see the winner sitting 2nd on the ladder.
We started the game strongly with Bear & Thommo kicking the first couple of goals of the game before Skye worked into the game and a late goal from Sip saw us one point leaders at the first break.
The second quarter saw us kick 2 goals to 1 in a quarter we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities and held a 9 point half time lead.
With the twin towers of Brucey & Bear kicking goals within the first 4 minutes of the third we went out to a 21 point lead. From that point on we were totally outworked & outplayed by a highly accurate & impressive Skye outfit. To concede 11 goals in a row was highly disappointing and Skye ran out deserved 27 point winners.
Bear with 5 goals and countless marks was our best along with Riet returning from injury & Shaneo who both gave their all.
We must re-group quickly as we have another tough game coming up against an in form East Brighton.
Melsteel Reserve’s Report It’s always a tough task taking on Skye in the reserves, particularly on their home
deck. The first half saw the boys playing a highly competitive brand of footy without the reward on the scoreboard they deserved going into the main break 4 goals down. The second half saw Skye really kick into gear running out 68 point winners.
Pribby, Cudders, Caise, Nate, Wilko & Braddy named as the best players.
Vigeo Financial Thirds Report
Our thirds had another tough day at the office as we were beaten by 124 points by Skye.
Chip, Bakes & O’Mara named the best players
Keysborough Hotel Netball Report
A Grade A grade had to play catch up for the first part of the 1st quarter this week, as Bentleigh jumped out of the blocks very quickly, we steadied and ended up in front by the first change and the lead increased every quarter from there, special mention to Bec who was extremely accurate in front of goals today eventually 21 goal winners well done girls let’s keep it going.
B Grade The B grade girls had their work cut out for them this week when meeting the second on the ladder and in form, St.Kilda city. They started steady but couldn’t quite get a grasp on the game and went into half time scores level. At this stage it was still anyone’s game! With a few big changes the girls stepped up and started making their move. A massive defensive effort by our amazing defenders meant they put the pressure on
and forced the turn overs we needed. At the other end the attackers were able to convert these which meant the girls finished with an amazing 10 goal win! Well done girls, it’s only up from here!
C Grade A tough contest for C grade yesterday, going up against St Kilda City. The girls started well but couldn’t maintain the lead into the second quarter. Some nice passages of play and good eyes into the ring weren’t enough to counteract mistakes that saw us lose the ball. Heads up and back on the training track to improve for next week. Go Burras!
D Grade D grade had the top of the table clash this week and knew they had to start well to make sure they remained undefeated and this is exactly what happened winning by 14 in the end and looking very comfortable all game.

HAMPTON
Another sunny Saturday arvo at the netball and we were up against Murrumbeena. We didn’t have a full team but with a huge effort made by all we were able to build a strong lead early. Our shooter Melissa scored 6 goals, Abby 9 and Erin 19!! Highly skilled passing in the attacking circle evaded the oppositions defence. Sarah, Angela and Phoebe controlled the midcourt whilst Millie, Tamanna and Victoria defended well. We were victorious 34-17.
The 19s played a combined parkmore/springy side and we let them get the jump on us in the first half (must be playing the wrong music pre game). Once we started to run and talk our way into the second half there were some fine passages of play
finished well with Diggaz bagging 5 and party tricks Bunna 3. We won the second half but there are no second prizes in footy and we went down 59-101. Best players were Smith, Blair, Hughes, Lefebvre, Lewis & Diggaz (winner of the alarm clock).
The Ressies were forced to make multiple changes to last weeks squad due to injuries and it showed in the first half as we didn’t team together fluently. The second half saw us control the footy and the scoreboard but we couldn’t undo the damage from the first two quarters. Dylan Chisolm was one of the best players and finished with three goals. Leesy provided us with a target up forward and Johnsy bagged 2.Liteas James Feather was solid in defence and got on to some barrelling torps late. Tom Davis was back to form in the ruck and Kyal Reynolds was
solid. Springvale 84-Hammers 66.
After a slow start in the first quarter the seniors fought their way back to hold a 3 point advantage at the main break. One of the highlights for Hampton supporters was the return of Zac Allen who proved a handful to his opponents up forward. Liam Thornell and Gassy bagged two with Liams 2nd goal the matchwinning set shot from 50 metres! Toddy Crane did some heavy lifting, Hayesy was tireless and AJ showed why he was on the front cover of the record. Zanca was back to his best along with Gunda and Liam Timms. We won by 3 points but will have to pull a few rabbits out of the hat if we are to compete with the Bears this week on our stage.
Go Hammers! Pres

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES
CAULFIELDA successful weekend for the Bears with 6 wins from 7 matches and our 4ths & 6ths netball teams recording their maiden wins for the season – and I predict there’ll be many more to come. The girls have been training hard over the past few weeks and their match performances have been improving week-by-week. Well done girls on your wins. Our 1sts had another good win to consolidate their place in the top 4. The 2nds got back onto the winner’s list and Barby’s Army again putting their opposition to the sword. Our 3rds had the Bye. A great result with 5 wins from 5 netball matches over the weekend – good work girls.
Sandleford 1st XVIII Report – Following some mixed form over recent weeks we
knew we had to be on from the first bounce against a Highett side that we knew would challenge us. In the first quarter Dovey spread his wings and took us in a ride with 4 first quarter goals to get out to a 5 goal lead. From then on we held a comfortable lead all day with the help of terrific run off half back from Mase and Mr Reliable (aka Adam Ballard) dominating in the middle giving the boys first use. Highett came at us in the third but the boys put the foot down to record our best win for the year by 54 points. Dovey kicked 6, Backers booted 2 goals, Twirdy kept finding the footy and BT continued his great form.
Insurance Solutions 2nd XVIII Report - We got off to a super start to lead by 21 points at the first break. The next three quarters was not a great display of footy by our boys
and to their credit Highett rebounded and challenged us. We held a slim lead at the last break but could not hold on going down by 2pts. Some missed opportunities at goal proving costly. Wakkers was good up forward booting 2 goals, Kristian was presenting and hitting packs hard all day and Nipper provided great run from half back. We need to learn that our matches are played for 4 quarters and have to perform strongly for the entire match not just a quarter or 2.
Next match-day luncheon to be held on Sat 15 July 2017 (former Carlton champ Ken ‘Bomba’ Sheldon as guest speaker). This luncheon will be a tribute to Noel Buckley who has served our club for 48 years. See Staity to book your tix ($50ph).
By Growler.
MURRUMBEENAOur footy girls headed to East Brighton to take on the Vampires on Friday night footy. We got off to a solid start and were never headed coming away with convincing 8 goal victory. Alice Kovess continued her fantastic season with 4 goals and was ably supported by skipper Grace Bibby and the class of Shanae Carter.
The Ressies got off to a great start with the tall timber Geans giving the East Brighton backmen a headache. We were never headed coming away with a convincing 139 point victory after finishing with 10 goals in the last. Geans finished with 6 as did
Nandor. Schmieds showed his class all day and Ryan Bilalis was solid all day down back. Great effort boys.
The Seniors preparation was good and we kicked the first couple of the game but East Brighton never went away with scores tied at the long break. The second half was most disappointing with our boys only managing 2 goals to East Brighton’s 8. A 6 goal loss was one of the most disappointing efforts we have played in a while. Liam Wilson tried hard all day but lacked support. We need to re-group and be disciplined in our approach as we get ready for Mount Waverley this week.
Our netballers took on Hampton in a torrid affair. Despite going down 17 to 34 the score
did not represent our girl’s amazing efforts. Keep your heads up girls - a win is just around the corner.
A great night was had by all at the Made in the 90’s night – huge thank you to Adriana and her crew for a well organised night.
Calling all Life Members for a day at the club on 24 June. Please contact Vin Laragy on 0409 231 183 for further details.
Thanks to all our valued sponsors with particular mention to Ruth Roberts from Woodards Carnegie and to Sue Foley from Bendigo Bank Murrumbeena.
Go Beena.
CHELSEA HEIGHTS
These notes are brought to you by our Gold Sponsors – Thomas Thomas Plastering and Combined Waste Services - Round 9. Another win, this time against a very spirited Heatherton. Division 2 is a great competition, this season, and no team, regardless of ladder position, should be taken lightly. This week we travel to Highett. Another tough “on the road “encounter. Stay alert and follow all instructions, we should come away with a win. Thank-you to Heatherton for your hospitality.
Everyone would be aware of the health issue our mate and great club person, Cal, is currently meeting head on. The club is with him all the way in his battle and please see the Social Report for a special event that is being planned.
Doolans Heavy Haulage Seniors Report – We travelled to Heatherton and led at every change. The Captain led by example and kicked 9 big ones. A good team effort and teamwork was to the fore. Remember to work hard out on the training track as this will continue to pay dividends.
Best Players – P. Smith, J. Williams, J. O’Dell, B. Finemore, A. Rhodes, N. Harrington.
Area Specialists Reserves Report – Another good win over Heatherton. We are well positioned for the business end of the season, but you need to keep playing, the way we know you can. As I said in the Senior Report, and this applies especially to the Reserves, you need to bond as
a team and the best way to do this is by getting down to training and “honing your skills and craft.” Speaking of Craft, take a look at our “Sponsor of the Week.”
Best Players – C, Gates, D. Lee, J. Waters, J. O’Dwyer, H. Bennett.
Craft and Co-Farm Netball Report – Amazing effort by our netballers this Saturday, it definitely felt like a win even though we just fell short. Dingley are undefeated and sitting on top of the ladder, they have been smashing the other teams by 30-40 points, so losing by 3 points was a super effort by the girls this week !!!
Domino’s Pizza – Patterson Lakes – Netball Players’ of the Week – No results submitted.
2 Moons Financial Solutions Social Report – Don’t forget to have a look at the Social Calendar, located around the walls, in the Clubrooms. . Also the Reverse Draw tickets are on sale. The Mid-Year Ball tickets will be available very shortly. See any Committee member if you require tickets or further information, about any of the Club functions. As I said earlier in these notes, our friend and a great “Heighter,” Callum, is facing a huge battle with his health. Cancer has no age restrictions and it never discriminates. For such a young man, this is devastating and as a Club we are going to help him get through this set-back. The Club will be holding a fundraising Event on June 25 at Beazley Reserve. The Chelsea Heights Aspendale Gardens Cricket Club will be our co-hosts. Live Auction starts at 4pm and will be conducted by Geoff Cox and Shaun
Cosgrove. There will also be a silent auction, live music, kids ‘activities, food, drinks and much more. All proceeds will go to Callum and his family. Remember to keep up to date on Facebook and the Web – “KICK IT WITH CÄLLUM.”
After the Highett game the rooms will be open and everyone is invited back for a nice and quite social evening.
Harry Magee & Co Volunteer of the Week – Pick up your trumpets and bugles and sound the Fanfare. The volunteer of the Week is our Co-President, Football Operations Manager and General Dogs Body (and what a Body) - **** PAUL LARKIN****

EAST BRIGHTONMcKinnon Hotel Seniors A danger game loomed against Murrumbeena whose form was pretty good but largely unrewarded in Season 2017. The improvement seen in recent weeks from the young Vampires received a jolt before the bye with a fair touch up from top team Chelsea Heights. A few question marks arose and it would be interesting to see the response. The Beena were quick out of the blocks and the team took time to settle but from ¼ time onwards pretty much controlled proceedings. One of the most pleasing aspects was the accurate use of the air conveyance. Players were able to spread effectivelyand those in possession were able to reward the run. Tackling pressure was up in the most impressive performance seen at Hurlingham since demotion. The team should have won by a greater margin but were restricted by a couple of man-buns. This week is a first ever clash against Keysborough. Their form is good and they will be a tough opponent. It is not uncommon for a team to drift off in intensity after a good win. In reality the opposite needs to apply this week with effort levels reaching a new height.
Hocking Stuart Reserves Great to see the BIG Show back for a brief stint. That’s about where the positives stop. 7/8ths of this list treat mediocrity as a pass! 3 years ago we took the field against the might of Dingley with 14 players, we lost 2 more by half time and fielded 3 Under 19 players that had already played earlier. So with 12 players against a 2 time premier we restricted them to under 4 goals for the half. A great effort! Compare that to 20 players available 10 goals down at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd quarter and allowed Murrumbeena to kick another 13 straight in 33 minutes. Draw your own conclusions!
Ray White Moorabbin Womens League leaders Murrumbeena are not sitting at the head of the table with a massive percentage for nothing and it was well demonstrated last Friday under lights to a reasonable crowd given the cold weather. The girls battled hard and were not disgraced but certainly need to stop the run afforded to their opposition if they are to threaten a fairly tight flag favourite. The flow of the girls game improves each week as they become more familiar with the nuances of Australian football. The skill levels are way up from their beginnings and support for each other is becoming second nature. On field communication can never be over stated
and needs to go up a notch or two but overall there has been massive improvement in every aspect of the game.

SANDOWNSeniors It was a day we would rather forget due to the magnitude of the loss against Doveton. However the general feeling around the Cobra family is to continue to put our best foot forward and seek the answers in order to gain a win. We may be taking a beating but with the support of our loyal fans and volunteers we can find our determination, our strength, our focus and our form. The Cobra will raise its head again and strike back! Go Cobra! Best on field were B Mc Lean, S Scandolera, M Bennie, M Jolley, A Brown (1st game with us) and M Dickson.
Reserves The Reserves had a positive start to the game but unfortunately didn’t get us the win. The Boys were again disappointed but will continue to return each week
searching for that win. Coach McCormick was encouraging when speaking to the boys after the game, he told them “they could have won, we need training, we need determination and focus.” He continued “I am sick of losing aren’t you, let’s do something about it!” Best on field were S O’Byrne, B Walker, T Stewart, W Barker, A Hamilton and Chris Slater.

13CABS - Seniors report Ashwood were up against third side Endeavour Hills at their home ground in what prove to be an exciting game.
The defence stood tall all day with stand out performances from George Lithotomos, Matt Maginness who marked everything and Chris Myers who was solid at full back. Chris Scully was brilliant all day and capped off a fine performance with 3 goals. Dave Riley played a very good game and Paul
Wineberg marked strongly at half forward. In the end the Woods ran out winners by 16 points in a very hard fought game which would have pleased Mick. We now sit on top undefeated but with some very tough games to come.
ELITE COMMUNICATIONS - Reserve report Endeavour are a good team and they played a good brand of organised footy to defeat us by 3 goals in a tight game. The late start may have thrown us out a bit but that would be clutching at straws to be a major reason and our boys will learn a lot. Shaun Williams was our stand out as he pushed for his senior spot back and Mitch bagged 3 at the other end but once again to many 50 metre penalties were given away at vital times. Jona was solid as was Baker but we lacked a bit of pace around the packs on the day. Lyndale at home a chance to redeem
ourselves and then some major challenges await.
AROUND THE CLUB Home game this week with a good forecast in the weather for Saturday, grab some friends and the kids and come down to watch the local footy.
Have a kick on the oval at each break in the game or listen to the coaches talk to the players. Well done on the juniors, future superstars all having a great wins again.

Netball Division 6 took on the undefeated Heatherton this week and came away with the win.
We went in confident and lead each quarter playing as a united team.
Sarah Schemderman was a stand out in goals with her accuracy and movement.
Our defence was strong and worked well as a team, final score 33-20 Best on, Courtney Richards, Debbie Hogan, Sarah Schemderman
Division 7 played a tough game this week, having to try fill the void of our injured players.
Whilst the first quarter was tight, Heatheron seemed to run away with the game second quarter.
Last half of the game, our girls came together to try close the 12 goal deficit, going down 44 to 37.
Best on, Tiarne & Kaitlyn Cipressi, Caitlyn Harkin
U19’s Another tough day for the boys, playing away at StPauls. Although the scoreboard is not reflecting it at the moment , improvement will come with consistent effort starting on the training track. The silver lining has been there in the form of senior debuts for a couple of the boys in recent weeks.
Reserves The reserves took on Sandown on Saturday and were in control from the first bounce with Brayden Keown and the on ballers getting first use out of the guts! Ricky Ramesdale was massive up forward with 11 goals in his return to football from long term injury. Everyone else was chipping in to play a solid four quarters to record a
convincing win! Best players R Ramesdale, B.Keown, D.Ralph, Doinz and J. Alexander
Seniors We asked for a response to the previous weeks poor effort and the boys certainly gave us one!
Ruthless from the outset, the team had 21 scoring shots by quarter time and didn’t let up for the full 4qtrs. A 270 point victory providing a much needed percentage boost. Good players across the ground including Stu Johnson, Seany Paynter and Floydy. Leading goal scorers were Trav Graeske, Robbo and Corrie Wilson with 6 each along with Knighter who kicked 5.

The boys played two good quarters but it wasn’t enough to beat a well drilled Black Rock side, best on Cam Marshall played another fantastic game and gave us the spark we needed in the second to get started. Gagey played a solid role down back again and is really starting to come into his own. Hopefully this week the boys can string together 4 quarters and start to play some consistent footy.
Best: C.Marshall, N.Gage, M.Ryan, A.Hollingsworth, P.Mauracher, R.Graham
Presidents Notes Unfortunately footy didn’t come up with any points against better sides on the day, but our Netballers went one better with a win and a loss.
At the Den: With our crowds building each week and with a little help from the supporters who attended another great
luncheon, our Senior Lads were well spurred on by the home crowd and got themselves into a winnable scenario by the 3 quarter break, but in the end a poor start cost us. All our lads had a crack and that’s all we ever desire as a footy club, and the signs of our development are there for all to see.
I want to personally want to thank all the people who volunteer their time to help with the numerous jobs associated with the day to day running of games and a footy club. Also a massive shout out to our fantastic Medico’s - Garry Corrie, Chris Clarke and James Tahana who treat all our wounded and keep the show on the road!
OK members and supporters, we urge you all to travel over to Moorabbin to cheer our Lions and help us perform and hopefully notch a couple of more wins.

SOUTH YARRAROUNDS REAL ESTATE REPORT:- B reserve took on Lyndhurst at their pristine home facilities this weekend. The girls felt like royalty with their own private changing rooms and flawless courts. Unfortunately the Yarras lost the game in the last quarter due to some careless mistakes. Evans was awarded best on Court for her endless effort in defence and working the ball down the court.
B Grade were strong in defence and the attacking end came together in a similar way to the final scene of ‘Dirty Dancing’ where Baby finally nails the lift. The Yarras showed great determination in being able to swing the momentum of the game back in our direction when we let it slip away for short periods of time. The final scores; St Kilda City 40 to Yarras 64.
A Reserve came firing out of the blocks and were winning by 5 goals at quarter-time. Brilliant defensive efforts from Rees and Eagleson. The Mid-courters played a good defensive game, picking off stray balls and providing many leads down the court. The Goalers played well together as a new combination, working hard throughout the
game. The Yarras unfortunately could not hold onto their lead and went down by 9 goals to Caulfield.
Despite a shaky start, A Grade went into the second quarter with a 2 goal lead, capitalising on the many errors made by Caulfield. Unfortunately we lost our mojo in the second quarter and were unable to regain momentum for the remainder of the match. Whilst we lacked our usual determination and felt overrun on the court, the scoreboard reflected only a 3 goal deficit going into the last quarter. This was largely due to accurate goaling and strong leads.
The Reserves got the jump on the Lightening with four goals to one point in the opening quarter. The final quarter was very entertaining and close. Lyndhurst kicked the first two goals and two points of the quarter to make it four points the difference. In the final minute of the game, the Yarras managed to get through Lyndhurst’s zone defence and Zach managed to kick the final goal of the game ending any possible chance of a Lyndhurst win. Final scores; 43-32.
The Yarras travelled to the wide expanses of Marriott Waters to take on Lyndhurst. The Lightning started well getting a 3 goal jump with their forwards looking dangerous
overhead. The Yarras looked to be taking control of the match in the second quarter as the lead was cut to just 7 points at the main break. The Yarras kicked 10 goals to 2 to run away 43 point victors showing the competition that we can win on a big ground and away from the Den.
Ladies’ Day is on Saturday 24th June. Tickets are $25 per person and we’d love for you to bring along a guest.

LCA NETBALL PLAYER OF THE ROUND
SHAE WONNACOTT DINGLEY
Dingley v Heatherton White is a contender for match of the season – a game that had everything. Shae Wonnacott is a player that’s seen multiple grand finals and has been a mainstay in the great Dingley sides of the SFNL era, and her experience came to the fore when it mattered most. In a game of momentum swings, many lead changes and peak pressure, it was coolness under pressure that got the points for Dingley, and Shae delivered when her team needed her.
WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE DAY
MEN’S PLAYER OF THE DAY
The Women’s player of the round for Round 5 is Endeavour Hills winger/midfielder Renee Thomas. In a game where their opponents had the best of the field position, Thomas’ outside run and long left foot help provide impetus to move the ball forward as the Falcons were efficient from their chances. What made her hard-running performance even more impressive was that she backed up to play for their 1st team in the match following.
Congratulations, Renee!
The son of Dingley Senior Coach Shane Morwood produced one of his best games for the club as the Dingoes recorded a hard-fought victory over East Malvern. On Saturday Morwood simply owed the defensive 50, winning plenty of possessions and looking to switch the play and launch attacks off half back at every opportunity. The rebounding defender has been an integral part of the Dingoes line up for a few years now, and is fast becoming an elite player in the SFNL in his own right.
Congratulations, Matt!
RENEE THOMAS ENDEAVOUR HILLS
MATT MORWOOD DINGLEY
This tall and athletic key position player is an excitement machine.
Nyanjok can cover plenty of ground and possesses an outstanding leap,
making him a dominant force when in the ruck. However, his sticky hands and accurate right boot ensures he is a dangerous proposition in attack as well, where he has booted nine goals in 2017. Has often backed up his brilliant Under 19 performances with appearances in the seniors or reserves and is one of the SFNL’s
most exciting prospects.
Congratulations, Ayang!
