THE JEWISH ANNOTATED NEW TESTAMENTEdited by Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler

Although major New Testament figures—Jesus and Paul, Peter andJames, Jesus’ mother Mary and Mary Magdalene—were Jews,

living in a culture steeped in Jewish history, beliefs, and practices, therehas never been an edition of the New Testament that addresses the Jewish background and the culture from which it grew—until now. In The Jewish Annotated New Testament, eminent experts under the gen-eral editorship of Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler put these writ-ings back into the context of their original authors and audiences. Andthey explain how these writings have affected the relations of Jews andChristians over the past two thousand years.

The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) brings to culmination the work of nearly 100 scholars, includingtranslators, editors, and a subcommittee of Catholic bishopswho provided extensive review of the biblical text over a period of many years. A significant moment in the revision’shistory occurred in September 2010 when Cardinal Georgesinged the canonical rescript, approving the publication of the text.

The NABRE is the first major amendment to the New American Bible translation since 1991. The New AmericanBible Revised Edition features:

• The first update of the Old Testament since 1970, takinginto account recent archaeological and textual discoveries.

• Complete revision of the Psalter.

Pope Benedict XVI released his Apostolic Exhortation onScripture in November 2010, stating “With the Synod Fathers I express my heartfelt hope for the flowering of ‘a newseason of greater love for sacred Scripture on the part of everymember of the People of God, so that their prayerful andfaith-filled reading of the Bible will, with time, deepen theirpersonal relationship with Jesus.’” (Propsitio 9)

Oxford is proud to publish its New American Bible line ofscripture in this much-anticipated translation. All of our textBibles will be available in the spring of 2011 with our line ofstudy bibles to follow in the summer.

Our new line of Catholic Bibles feature all of the same important elements you expect from Oxford Bibles: high grade leather, durable covers, ribbon markers, and attractive pricing.

The NRSV Notetaker’s Bible The NRSV Notetaker’s Bible offers the perfect format for students of the Bible who wish tomake their own notes–whether scholarly notations or spiritual insights—rather than rely onthe words of others.

Some wide-margin Bibles have only slightly larger margins on both sides of the page, andwriting in the gutter is nearly impossible. In The NRSV Notetaker’s Bible, we’ve eliminatedthose frustrations by giving you an extra-wide, two-inch outside margin. And because thetext is single column, your notes are always right beside the relevant passage. Moreover, we’veadded rules that make it easier to keep on track. For more expansive thoughts, you can turnto the back of the Bible for additional ruled pages.

Jewish Study BibleNow, readers of the Bible who are interested in studying Jewish traditions have a one-volumeresource specifically tailored to their needs. The Jewish Study Bible presents the center ofgravity of the Scriptures where Jews experience it—in Torah. It offers readers the fruits ofvarious schools of Jewish traditions of biblical exegesis (rabbinic, medieval, mystical, etc.)and provides them with a wealth of ancillary materials that aid in bringing the ancient textto life. The nearly forty contributors to the work represent the cream of Jewish biblicalscholarship from the world over. No knowledge of Hebrew is required for one to make useof this unique volume.

The JSB uses The Jewish Publication Society TANAKH Translation, whose name is anacronym formed from the Hebrew initials of the three sections into which the Hebrew Bibleis traditionally divided (Torah, Instruction; Nevi’im, Prophets; and Kethubim, Writings). Acommittee of esteemed biblical scholars and rabbis from the Orthodox, Conservative, andReform Judaism movements produced this modern translation, which dates from 1985.

Anyone interested in acquiring a fuller understanding of the riches of the Bible will profitfrom reading The Jewish Study Bible.

New English Translation of the SeptuagintThe Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of Jewish sacred writings) is of great importance in the history of both Judaism and Christianity. The first translation of thebooks of the Hebrew Bible (plus additions) into the common language of the ancientMediterranean world made the Jewish scriptures accessible to many outside Judaism. Notonly did the Septuagint become Holy Writ to Greek speaking Jews but it was also the Bibleof the early Christian communities: the scripture they cited and the textual foundation ofthe early Christian movement.

Translated from Hebrew (and Aramaic) originals in the two centuries before Jesus, the Septuagint provides important information about the history of the text of the Bible. Forcenturies, scholars have looked to the Septuagint for information about the nature of thetext and of how passages and specific words were understood.

For students of the Bible, the New Testament in particular, the study of the Septuagint’s influence is a vital part of the history of interpretation. But until now, the Septuagint hasnot been available to English readers in a modern and accurate translation. A New EnglishTranslation of the Septuagint fills this gap.

Comparative PsalterThe Book of Psalms has occupied a central place in Jewish and Christian worship for millennia. This authoritative volume brings together the Psalms in a quartet of versions thatis certain to be an invaluable resource for students of this core book of the Bible. The textsfeatured in A Comparative Psalter represent a progression of the text through time. The ancient Masoretic Hebrew and Revised Standard Version Bible are displayed on one page, while the New English Translation of the Septuagint and Greek Septuagint are on the facingpage. The same set of verses is displayed for all four texts, making it easy to compare. TheModern English versions included in this volume are noteworthy for their fidelity to the ancient texts. The first major translation of the Christian Scriptures from the original languages to be undertaken since the King James Version, the RSV debuted in 1952 to critical acclaim. It dramatically shaped the course of English Bible translation work in the latter half of the twentieth century, and remains the Bible of choice for many people.Meanwhile, the New English Translation of the Septuagint is the first work of its kind in acentury and a half. This major project brings to the fore a wealth of textual discoveries thathelp illuminate the Book of Psalms for twenty-first century readers.
