Thank you for requesting a private walking tour pack for an Official Guided Walking Tour of Oxford,conducted by members of the Oxford Guild of Guides, the Official Guides for Oxford City.

This pack includes:• some useful general information to help you plan your tour• information about the different types of tours offered• terms and conditions• University buildings’ admission fees• a map• a booking form• some itineraries to help you to plan your visit

GENERAL INFORMATIONColleges & University Buildings• Most of the colleges at present allow groups of a maximum of 19 people. St John’s College, New College(from October to Easter) and Exeter College only allow groups of 14 people excluding the guide.

• The great majority of colleges open to visitors charge an entrance fee. Please state in the booking formwhich one you would like to include and instruct your group leader to pay the entry fee in cash on the dayof the tour. Please refer to page 5 for opening times and prices.

• It is part of the guide’s expertise to ensure that all tours are interesting and enjoyable even if a college is not included.• When scheduling a Harry Potter tour please check the opening times of Christ Church (specifically theDining Hall), New College and the Divinity School (page 5). To adhere to Christ Church rules all groupsmust book their visit directly with them ([email protected]). When doing this please book the visit atthe time your tour starts or at the start of the 2nd hour of the tour. See page 5 for contact details.

• When visiting the colleges, please remember that they are places of study all year round, so please make aslittle noise as possible and follow your guide’s advice.

• Subject to availability the Divinity School, the most beautiful Gothic building in the city, and the SheldonianTheatre where matriculation and graduation ceremonies take place, could be included in your tour.

Parking & Traffic• If you are coming by car we suggest you use the city’s Park & Ride facilities. For further informationplease visit www.oxfordbus.co.uk

• For any queries on overnight parking and on street parking please telephone 01865 815700.• If you are coming by coach please refer to the map on page 6.If the coach park in the city centre is full you might like to check whether it would be possible to parkat the Kassam Stadium (OX4 4XP) where there are 15 spaces available every day except on match days.Please contact Michael Doyle on 01865 337602 or 337682. There is a £10 charge per coach.

• The approach roads to Oxford are very busy as are the M4 and M25. Please allow ample time for yourjourney especially from the direction of London. For up to date traffic and travel information please visitwww.bbc.co.uk/oxford/travel/

Public ToiletsPlease make full use of the public toilets available at service stations on the ring road, on the outskirtsof the city as there are limited public toilets facilities in Oxford.

Alternative Meeting Points• If you are coming by train (station OX1 1HS) you might want to consider meeting the guide in the CastleDevelopment (OX1 1AY) or Bonn Square (OX1 1LQ).

• If you are coming by public bus/coach you could meet the guide at Gloucester Green (OX1 2BL) except on Wednesday and Thursday as there is a market there.

• If you are coming by private coach your group can be dropped/picked up in Beaumont Street near theOxford Playhouse (OX1 2LW). No waiting allowed here.

• If you are staying in a hotel, B&B or college in the city centre the guide could meet you there.• Between November and February you could meet at the Visitor Information Centre (OX1 3AS).

Accessibility• The tours can be tailored to be wheelchair accessible. Please inform us in advance if this is required.• A portable hearing loop is available by request. Subject to availability.• Guide dogs are allowed on the tours and in the colleges.

Edward Burne-Jones and Morris studied here and together with Holman Hunt they left the city with some outstandingartistic works. Join a tour with emphasis on this delightful period of Victorian art.Gargoyles and Grotesques Symbols, emblems, motifs, animals and demons cling to the roofs and walls of delightfulbuildings in Oxford. Bring your binoculars!Pottering in Harry’s Footsteps Tour the locations where memorable Harry Potter scenes were shot andenter the magical wizarding world. Civil War Oxford in the Civil War was at the centre of the national stage, with King Charles making hisHeadquarters at Christ Church. Ramparts enclosed the city, college silver was melted down to make coinsand Oxford became a garrison rather than a university town. Join this tour to hear more about life in Oxfordduring the Civil War.Religion at Oxford On this tour your will learn how religion and faith shaped the early University. Follow inthe footsteps of the martyrs, the founders of Methodism, the Oxford Movement and Oxford’s recent saints.Oxford’s Benefactors Oxford University owes its collegiate system to the generosity of early benefactorswho founded colleges and endowed scholarships for “poor young clerics”. Oxford has continued to attractbenefactors over succeeding centuries: in particular John Radcliffe, Cecil Rhodes and Lord Nuffield. This tourwill explore their legacy.Medieval Oxford In medieval times, Oxford was a walled town, with most of the population engaged intrading and markets. It was also an emerging centre of learning where bloody confrontations between Townand Gown took place. On this tour your guide will bring the medieval town alive!Oxford during WWIWhen the war began in 1914, hundreds of young men immediately signed up.Undergraduate numbers dropped dramatically and the city received an influx of refugees and woundedsoldiers. Women took over traditional male roles in the running of the city and transport, while dons switchedfrom academic studies to research into aiding the war effort. Join this tour to hear about life in Oxford duringthe war years.

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS• A booking form needs to be completed to book a tour. • Your contract for your tour will be with one or more members of the Oxford Guild of Guides.Visit Oxfordshire Limited acts as agent of members of the Oxford Guild of Guides.

• Visit Oxfordshire Limited will allocate the appropriate number of those members as your guide(s)to conduct your tour and these Terms and Conditions will apply.

• Your booking will be accepted when Visit Oxfordshire Limited has booked your guide(s) and issued an invoiceto you for your tour at which point and on which date the contract for your tour shall come into existence.

PaymentFull payment of the invoice must be made at least 5 working days before the tour takes place. Please quote your invoice number when making payment.You may pay by one of the following methods:1. By credit/debit card.We do not accept American Express or Diners Card.2. By cheque. Please send a cheque payable to Visit Oxfordshire Limited for the full amount duewith your booking form. Cheques must be in pounds sterling and drawn on a British bank.

3. By bank transfer. Please note that you will need to cover all the costs.

Confirmation of BookingBy completing the booking form, you agree that all written communications with you by Visit OxfordshireLimited will be made by email to the address specified in your booking form. Bookings will be confirmedby email after payment is received. Receipts will be sent only on request. Agents – please ensure you senda copy of these Terms and Conditions and the booking form to your group leaders.

CancellationIf a booking is cancelled a cancellation fee of 20% of the total amount of the booking will be charged. If less than 7 days’ notice is given when cancelling a tour or a guide booked for a tour, or if the group fails to arrive,the total amount of the tour fee will be retained to pay the guide(s).

Changes to bookingsA minimum of 5 working days’ notice in writing must be given for any changes to your tour. For a change of dateand/or time a £15 fee will be charged. If on the day of the tour the group size differs from that stated on thebooking form and it is more than 19 people per guide, the guide(s) will not take the additional tour delegates.

Late ArrivalA group arriving late for a tour will have that time deducted from their tour. Guides will wait at the meeting pointfor 45 minutes. They will then wait at the Visitor Information Centre for a further 1 hour and 15 minutesi.e. until the tour was scheduled to end. No refunds will be given for late arrivals. In case of delay, groupsmust make every effort to contact the Walking Tours and Groups Team on +44 (0)1865 252037.

Limitation of Liability• Except as set out in these Terms and Conditions, all warranties, conditions and other terms implied bystatute or common law are, to the fullest extent permitted by law, excluded from this contract.

• Visit Oxfordshire Limited acts as agent for your guide and it shall under no circumstances whatever be liableto you, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, for any lossor damage arising under or in connection with your tour.

• Nothing of this conditions shall limit or exclude liability of Visit Oxfordshire Limited for death or personalinjury caused by its negligence.

ComplaintsAny complaint about a tour or your guide should be notified to Visit Oxfordshire acting as agent for yourguide. Visit Oxfordshire will handle the complaint on behalf of your guide in accordance with its complaintprocedures but as Visit Oxfordshire Limited acts only as agent for the guides, it accepts no responsibility forthe conduct of your tour.

Foreign Language ToursAlthough every effort will be made to find foreign language speaking guides, this may not be possible. The Walking Tour Admin Team will arrange for English speaking guides instead. If you have specified that this isnot acceptable the tour will be cancelled.

English Tours for Groups of Foreign StudentsGuides can be booked to match the English level of the group: beginners or intermediate. Please specify the level required in the booking form. We advise a 1.5 hour tour for beginners.

Fees from 1st January 2014

Please see the table below.

• The fees quoted are exclusive of any admission charges imposed by the owners and operators ofany premises visited on your tour.

• Each group leader counts as one person and there are no free places on tours and no price reductionfor children.

• Large groups of young people must be accompanied by an adult group leader on their tour – at leastone group leader per 18 students. One guide will be allocated to every 19 people. Some sites impose alower limit to this number. If applicable, you will be informed of this before your booking is finally confirmed.
