Mahikeng -ter arrested 12 suspects during Operation Fiela between Friday, 24, and Saturday, 25 July 2015. Col. Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokes-person, said police members and immigra-

Netcare has alerted the public to the opportunistic
opportunities on social media and other informal platforms. According to Peter Warrener, group human re-sources director of Netcare, the company’s name is being misused in a series of social media job scams.“Certain Facebook posts falsely indicate that the company is seeking to employ enrolled nurses. Similarly, learnerships and internship va-cancies within Netcare are also being advertised. We continue to receive enquiries from members of the public seeking clarity on employment or train-ing opportunities that are advertised fraudulently through various social media platforms under Net-care’s name.”“Typically, the modus operandi of these fraudsters is to solicit money from the public with a promise of either employment at a Netcare facility or training towards becoming a Netcare employee. This is often done by requesting applicants to send payment as a part of their application,” ex-plains Warrener. In order to assist the public, Netcare is sharing a
that the job advertised is a scam and not a legiti-
mate job opportunity:The application form asks for banking details;Only a cellular telephone number is supplied for enquiries as the landline is “out of order”;A dream job without the need of being inter-viewed is being promised;A legitimate sounding name (Net-care) is be-ing used;Payment may well be requested “upfront” for administration purposes, accommodation and uniforms; The payment mechanism is suggested as being facilitated via a cellular telephone num-ber at a money market facility, such as a su-permarket.
“We urge the public to be vigilant of such mes-sages, Facebook postings and emails as they do not originate from Netcare. This is not the way we recruit staff or advertise learnerships and intern-ships,” adds Warrener. Individuals are urged to make contact with the Netcare Human Resources Shared Services Cen-tre on 086 022 5547 if they would like to verify the legitimacy of a job posting.
Phokeng residents to be careful after a series of robberies have been reported in the area.Const. Kabelo Phetabosigo, police spokesperson, says robbery is a dangerous crime of violence that can threaten any person or business. “We encourage homeowners, business owners and neighbours to call and report if they see anything suspicious in their neighbourhood, whether it is a suspicious vehicle or people wandering around the area. Neighbours are also urged to know one another so that they can be observant and to re-port suspicious behaviour.”Phetabosigo says when travelling or walking at night, one must avoid walking or parking a vehicle in shadowed dark areas, always be alert of what is going on and pay attention to who is around you when you are in public at all times. Try to travel on busy well-lit routes. He says people should be alert when using, or simply carrying, a cell phone, especially after dark. “There is a market for stolen phones and you could become a victim of a rob-
bery. If you do not need to use the phone, keep it secured and out of sight. Refrain from text mes-saging, online chatting or talking on the phone whilst on the streets if you do not absolutely need to use the phone.” Avoid displaying and carry-ing large sums of money in public and be careful when carrying a purse or a wallet, never carry your wallet in your back pocket and be wary of strang-ers approaching you. Pay attention to their facial appearances as it will assist the police in a facial identity kit should you fall prey to the robbers. If you are confronted, co-operate. Give the criminal what he/she asks for, whether it’s a wallet, keys, jewellery, credit cards or electronics. Your life is more valuable than replaceable possessions. Don’t make sudden moves or try to apprehend the criminal yourself. Concentrate on remembering a description and call the police immediately. Phet-abisogo says many people fall victim to robbers and their modus operandi is quite similar. “Be on the lookout and watch out for your neighbours.”
