  • MontageDescription:A montage baised on religion, made by the blending of three images and the use of typography.

    Date: 1/24/2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to manage Photoshop layers.Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.Use filters.Apply appropriate typography.

Process: I started this project by selecting three images that were close to the same color scheme. I found an dragon image large enough to cover the entire background and cropped it to the 8.511. size for the page. Then I placed the other two images on separate layers and created a mask for each. I did not blend the original background image but I blended out the hard edges of the new image corners out with 80% opacity to make them rounded. Then as I got closer to the people I changed the opacity to 30% and widened the brush to give it more of an area to blend. I wanted to depict the story of of the Book of Mormon people telling about their ancestors who were heroes in protecting their families, liberty and freedom so I wanted the family to melt into the shield of the warrior and the warrior to melt into the dragon. I then selected a brown shade from the dragon and orange to contrast in the text.

  • LogosDescription:Three Logos representing a company fit to the purpose of the company.

    Date: 2/21/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create three different logos for a companyLearn how to use Illustrator toolsImage Drawing with shapes and pen toolApply appropriate typography.

Process: I started this project by using the shape tools. I found that the elipse tool looked like the parts I would need to make a mouse. I used another white elipse shape to put a divit in the side of the mouse and a rounded rectangle for the wheel. The color scheme was much easier to follow on the logos I had pre-determined to use them on. I used a light gradient tool on the mouse wheel. For the other two I used simple rectangle tools and other shapes to create the formation of a USB Drive and another of hexagons growing. For the typeface I decided that I wanted to go with a professional look but then added a touch of script font to the USB Drive because it used more childish colors and I wanted to keep that same feeling throughout the design.

  • LetterheadDescription:Letterhead and watermark designed using a personally created logo.

    Date: 2/28/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Use basic tools in Illustrator and InDesignCreate new logoMake watermark and letterhead using these toolsApply appropriate typography.Use contact information

Process: I created the logo for bartontechgroup using simple shapes in Adobe illustrator. They started as an idea and then I sketched some ideas but nothing felt right mainly because I cant draw perfect ellipses or circles so I decided to draw them on adobe illustrator and came up with this idea. I created the logo using the pathfinder tool to cut and combine these simple shapes. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI file into this document.

I then copied/pasted the contact information onto this page. I kept the logo and contact information. I chose a font that I felt worked well with the business feeling of the logo. Finally, I put the watermark on the back and put it towards the bottom very large as the logo and kept it low in the opacity.

I made it so that the logo was brought over. I found a layout for the business card size and stayed within those parameters. I made the right side with a rectangle tool and then I used the same watermark on the letterhead to make it have more going on in the background but not too much. I made my name 12pt font to contrast with the 10pt contact information and titles.

  • FlierDescription:A flier announcing a Graduate Leadership Conference in black and white

    Date: 1/24/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply design principles and use appropriate typographyIncorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic layoutRetrieve image and logo from links

Process: I got the image and logo from my client (the professor) and to create a nice flow I decided to start in the top left corner and end in the bottom right. I placed the image in the top left and I wanted it to fit in nicely with the rest of the design so I used the text box to create the title and placed it over the image. Because it was black and white I changed the gradiant of the image in that corner so that it would be visible and not close to any difined lines. I chose two fonts that went well with each other and kept a business-like feel to them. I debated for a time on where to put the date and information about the conference but I found that the logo needed to go in the bottom right corner so that the white space around the text would lead the audiences eyes in that direction. I put a bold black box around the question, that begins, do you have the competitive edge... to separate the title and the body copy well.

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe PhotoshopAdobe InDesignAdobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn and use text wraping around an imageMake a two sided brochure that is full bleed in printUse at least 250 wordsApply appropriate typography

Process: I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator and used the spiral shape tool to make the shell. I chose the colors to make them bright and inviting. I also tried to make it simple and then brought it over to InDesign. I looked online for large images of the different places and themes I wanted and found high quality large images for a good print. I decided I wanted a simple background image on the inside and outside so I made the inside one with a stronger opacity. For the image of the Iguana I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge and apply contrast to the outline of the Iguana. The changes I made in the refine mask dialogue box made a softer image that didnt look so sharp and cutout against the Orange background. I then placed the Iguana into InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel of the image and made it so the text wrapped around its head.

  • Event AdDescription:A full bleed Event Ad with a high quality image sharing date, time and information on the event.

    Date: 1/31/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word

Objectives:Learn how to make quality designs using Microsoft WordScan and import imagesUse a color scheme working with your imageCreate a full bleed image

Process: First I scanned an old image of myself driving a remote controll car. I then got the idea to make an Event Ad for a remote control race. I chose a monocromatic blue color scheme because it matched the color of the jeans in the picture. I also incorporated two fonts for the title/heading and another for the body copy. The hardest part was getting the image to not look distorted because the brightness changed so much of the image. I had used the scan setting at 300ppi and then printed the image at 150 to make it quality still. I decided to make a collection of rectangles and text boxes in order to store my body copy and title.

  • Photo DesignDescription:A photo taken by me, including a specific colorshceme and sharing a message about designing

    Date: 2/7/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to manage Photoshop layersLearn how to incorporate color scheme into design coming from an image.Photography with digital cameraUse filtersApply appropriate typography

Process: I chose a colorscheme that I was not very comfortable with: Big Split Complementary. It has four different colors that contrast each other well. I found different objects that represented each color and with help in photoshop I enhanced the image using many of its tools. I changed the vibrance and saturation to make the image stand out more. I also learned how to manipulate each color to make it match the colors more from my choice of color schemes. I made color swatches out of hexagons to incorporate the colors better in my design and I also picked the two fonts. One was already in the image, and the other I felt went well to contrast that text. I then put the title and message at the bottom feeling that it wrapped up the design as a good place to end with the eyes.

  • Web PageDescription:A Webpage designed to show off a logo for BartonTechGroup.com

    Date: 3/15/15

    Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 04Ben Pingel

    Program(s)/Tools: NotepadThe internet

Objectives:Learn basic coding for htmlLearn basic coding for CSSUsing color schemes from logo into webpage design

Process: I used Adobe Illustrator to work on the logo, I used notepad to change the codes and I used w3schools website (http://www.W3.org) to check and fix my code.I used the basic layout used in class and modified the code to match my exact colors. I did this by finding the code for the specific numbers online. I uploaded a photo of my logo and then pulled the hexadecimal numbers from them. I planted these in my code under the CSS categories of the different sections. I inserted my text to change the description of the website. I also put in line breaks around the logo to contain it and justify centering.
