    Dear Parishioners,

This weekend ends the Christmas season with the Baptism of the Lord, and now we are looking forward to Lent. All indications are that this Lent will be similar to last year in that we will not be out of the woods with the restrictions on gatherings due to COVID. This means that most of what we will plan will be online. It is not the best, but it is at least something. Hopefully it will be effective by encountering Christ and enriching our faith in Him. If you have any questions about how to access things online, please feel free to call the office. As I mentioned, this weekend is the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. It is a great time to reflect on the gift of our own Baptism. For cradle Catholics, it is hard to remember that day since we were only infants. However, the effects of the Sacrament last a lifetime whether we are aware of it or not. It was on that day that the life of grace was open to us as we started the Sacramental life on our journey to eternal life with God. The challenge now is to take advantage of the graces God has offered the Baptized. At almost every funeral, I try to mention how the Catholic funeral uses the same symbols as a Catholic Baptism. Water, the sign of the cross, the candle and white cloth are all used at baptism and speak about the new life of the baptized. They are used again at the end of life. These two events serve as bookends of a faithful life lived in God’s grace. It is more than a ritual; it is when we are sealed as belonging to God with the hope that at our death, God will remember us as one of his own. My heart also goes out to all the grandparents who are hurt because their own children are not having their children baptized. Jesus is the one who gave us the commandment to baptize all nations and to teach them all that he has taught us. Now so many young Catholics are ignoring Jesus’ final command before he ascended into heaven. Let us pray that there will be a renewed faith in the Sacrament of Baptism on this feast day. -- Fr. Daniel

    Offertory for 12/27/2020

    4.

The Business Manager Corner: First let me apologize for the error in last week’s bulletin. The offertory numbers were from 12/20/20 not 12/27/20. I want to Thank you for your generosity once again, as you see the weekly offerings have been over budget for the past two weeks. However, the Christmas Offering is underbudget, you can still send in your envelopes or go online to donate specifically for Christmas. If you need assistance, please call me at the office. Now that the holidays are done, my hope is that all the projects will soon begin. The first one I am pushing for is the lights to be replaced at Holy Cross. Then we have the parking lot lights and heat tapes at Holy Trinity. Those should be completed in the next week or two according to the electrician and of course weather permitting. There are many more projects on the agenda. If you have any questions and/or concerns regarding any of the buildings please do not hesitate to give me a call and I will address to the best of my knowledge. We have a new waste company and new dumpsters have been placed at all the churches. They will be locked so if you have any questions or need to dispose of some trash please call the office and we will get the maintenance staff right on it. You may now go on the website to request a report of your 2020 offering for tax purposes, you may also call the office. Please know that we legally have until January 31, 2021 to send these to you, but our goal is to have them out within two weeks from your request. Please be patient.

    5. Dear Friends of St. Dom's,

This Christmas season we at St. Dom's are celebrating first and foremost the birth of Christ. We are also celebrating the completion of 18 weeks of full-time in-person instruction with minimal disruption at our Lewiston and Auburn Campuses. Like St. Dom's Saints have always done in the past, we have risen to the challenges brought by the pandemic and have surmounted them. As we embark on the new semester, we do so with our faith in Christ, renewed energy, and a strategy to teach our students the knowledge and skills needed to cope with adversity, recognize our blessings, and show our gratitude.

Woven through our instruction is the proclamation that Christian hope is not some vague, circumstantial belief that ‘the future will be better than the past.’ Rather, it is a virtue that combines a desire for something and the expectation that it will be received. More specifically, Christian hope is a desire for divine union with God and the expectation of eternal happiness through it. But we need not wait for this union if we practice hope now. Union with God can be experienced in the present and with increasing fullness, if we continually allow our words, actions, and selves to be conformed to and by divine love. Christians consider hope a virtue because it is an act of will—an intentional choice made to approach the events of our lives with a particular orientation. With hope, we can choose to view the new semester as an opportunity to grow in holiness—especially through our relationship with the source of our hope, Jesus Christ.

A faith-centered St. Dom's education is within the reach of the children in grades Pre-K through 12. Explore St. Dom's through our website www.stdomsmaine.org or by calling to schedule a tour at either campus. Call or email Enrollment Director Dawn Theriault at 207-782-6911 or [email protected]. God Bless and Happy New Year,

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM IN THE PARISH Baptizing Infants and Children Under 7 Years of Age WHY DO CATHOLICS BAPTIZE? After his resurrection, Jesus gave this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:16-20) By commanding his disciples to baptize all nations, he established the means by which people would die to sin—original sin and actual—and begin to live a new life with God.

WHY WAS JESUS BAPTIZED? The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters. Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will. Jesus did not need to be baptized because he was totally faithful to the will of his Father and free from sin. However, he wanted to show his solidarity with human beings in order to reconcile them to the Father.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM? In John’s Gospel, Jesus has a dialogue with Nicodemus. Jesus teaches that Baptism is necessary for salvation. “No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” (Jn 3:5) The word baptism in its origins is Greek and means “immersion” and “bath.” Immersion in water is a sign of death and emersion out of the water means new life. To bathe in water is also to undergo cleansing. Saint Paul sums up this truth when he says, “You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” (Col 2:12)

    THANK YOU!

    EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING CEREMONY

All gather around the manger while the visiting priest leads the prayers. If there is no priest present, the father of the family leads: P: God’s peace be in this home, All: And in all who live here. Antiphon: P: The star burned like a flame, pointing

the way to God, the King of kings; the wise men saw the sign and brought their gifts in homage to their great King.

Canticle of Mary, the Magnificat, Luke 1:26-55: All: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; for He has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations shall call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His Name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their con-ceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abra-ham and his children forever.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.

P: Many shall come from Sheba. All: Bearing gold and incense. P: O Lord, hear my prayer. All: And let my cry come unto Thee. P: Let us pray. O God, who by the guidance of a star did this day reveal your Only Begotten Son to the Gentiles, grant that we who know You by faith may be brought to the contemplation of the heavenly majesty, through the same Christ, Our Lord.

All: Amen. All: Be enlightened and shine forth, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come,

and upon thee is risen the glory of the Lord, Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary.

P: Nations shall walk in your light, and kings in the brilliance of your rising.

All: And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.

BLESSING OF CHALK P: Bless, O Lord God, this creature, chalk,

and let it be a help to mankind. Grant that those who will use it with faith in your most holy name, and with it inscribe on the doors of their homes the names of your saints, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, may through their merits and intercession enjoy health in body and protection of soul; through Christ our Lord.

    All: Amen. HOUSE BLESSING

P: Let us pray. O Lord, Almighty God, bless this house that it may become a shelter of health, chastity, self-conquest, humility, goodness, mildness, obedience to the com-mandments, and thanksgiving to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Upon this house and those who dwell herein may Your blessing remain forever, through Christ our Lord.

    All: Amen.

The father of the family and the three “kings” take blessed chalk (one piece each) and proceed to the front door, accompanied by the priest. While all look on, the father reads the corresponding words as the kings in-scribe their initials onto the lintel. (The initials CMB also stand for Christus mansionem benedicat: May Christ bless this house.)

    Meaning of the Tradition

The custom in Germany is that after a service at the churches the children go from house to house to gather offerings for poor children in poor countries. At the homes they sing songs and recite messages of Christmas. At each house they paint the letters "20+C+M+B+21" which are for the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). At the same time the letters are the first letters of the names of the wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.

    · Chalk (any color), blessed by a priest. · Holy Water, blessed by a priest. · 2021: Prayer of Blessing. · Clean the lintel of the front entrance door. Some

families choose between inscribing the outside or interior lintel.

    This is what you will write on your door in chalk: 20 + C + M + B + 21
