gu idance as we have worked to deve lop our plan .

work ing throughout the summer in col laborat ion

with s ta f f and s takeholders to prepare fo r our

s tudents ’ return to school and l earn ing in August . Parents and s ta f f were

surveyed mult ip le t imes in an ef for t to address concerns and incorporate a

var iety of perspect ives in the plan to s tar t the new school year .

Our goal i s to prov ide high -qual i ty ins t ruct ion and l earn ing opportuni t ies in a

c lean and sa fe env i ronment fo r s tudents and s ta f f .   The Dist r ic t ’s in tent i s to

begin at Leve l One fo r the s tar t of the school year with in -person l earn ing , but

we fu l l y recognize that may need to change at any t ime based on the ra te of

t ransmiss ion in our community and the guidance f rom heal th of f ic ia l s .  On

Monday , Ju ly 20 , the fo l lowing Roadmap to Reopening Plan was shared with ,

and approved by , the Board of Educat ion . Parents wi l l have the opt ion of

sending the i r s tudent to school fo r in -person l earn ing or enro l l ing in the WSD

Vir tua l Academy .   Parents wi l l rece ive an emai l on Ju ly 21 with deta i l s about

choos ing an opt ion fo r the i r s tudent (s ) . Those who choose to enro l l in the

Vi r tua l Academy must commit fo r the ent i re semester . Fami l ies wi l l need to

not i f y the Dist r ic t of the i r in tent by Ju ly 28 .

Due to the cur rent t rend data of Cov id - 19 cases in St . Char les County , the WSD

wi l l be requi r ing s tudents in grades 3 through 12 and a l l s ta f f members to wear

face cover ings when soc ia l dis tanc ing i s not feas ib le .  

We unders tand that th i s pandemic has caused vary ing l eve l s of apprehens ion

and numerous chal lenges fo r a l l of us to work our way through .   In the WSD ,

the scope of those chal lenges i s only compounded by the s ize of our bui ld ings

and our his tor ic growth . With your cont inued pat ience , f lex ib i l i t y , and

feedback , I am conf ident we wi l l ef fect i ve ly work together to ensure the sa fety

and wel l -being of our s tudents , s ta f f and community .

The WSD Virtual Academy will be very different than theextended school closure virtual learning students experiencedin the spring.  The WSD Virtual Academy will include:

the school year at Level 1 with in-person learning, but we fully recognize that may need to change at any time based on the rate of transmission in our community and the guidance from local health officials.

Elementary (Grades PreK-6) will be enrolled in the WSD VirtualAcademy with a WSD Virtual teacher who will serve as their“homeroom” and core curriculum instructor.   Secondary(Grades 7-12) will be enrolled in a combination of FuelEducation, Launch, and WSD Virtual courses, which will befacilitated by various Missouri certified teachers.

A traditional reopening of the PAT program with

Students are permitted (not required) to wear a face covering in Barfield Early Childhood Special EducationCenter. Teachers and staff will be required to wear facecoverings when social distancing is not feasible.

Nurses and clinic staff will wear face coverings and otherprotective gear as necessary.  They will follow the NationalAssociation of School Nurses Guidance for HealthcarePersonnel on the Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEin Schools During COVID-19).

All front offices will have plexiglass partitions.

Hand WashingWe will schedule hand washing breaks and we will encouragehand washing throughout the day. We will also supply handsanitizer in every classroom. Students and staff members mustwash hands or use hand sanitizer before and after meals andoutdoor play. Teachers will guide students on proper handwashing. Hand washing and hygiene signs will be placed instudent restrooms.

Health ServicesOur clinic and school staff request an open line ofcommunication between home and school regarding anypossible COVID-19 exposure or symptoms.  Please contactthe nurse directly and as soon as possible if your child orfamily has been exposed.

Three spaces will be utilized for nursing services: mobile well-clinic on a cart with ascreen (meds, glucose checks, etc), sick clinic in standard nurse’s office, and a separate nebulizer room (with proper ventilation).

Self-care kits will be provided for each learning space for basic/minor needs.

In the event of a positive COVID-19 case, the District will collaborate with and follow theguidance of St. Charles County Department of Public Health. Students and staff areasked to self-screen at home prior to coming to school each day.  Students exhibitingsymptoms of illness should not attend school and parents should consult theirhealthcare provider and follow CDC considerations regarding their return to school.Symptoms of COVID-19, as currently defined by CDC, include: 

If a parent is reporting an absence with symptoms, notes will be taken by the mainoffice. Students who enter the sick clinic with symptoms are required to wear a mask.Students who meet the criteria to be sent home ill will remain in the clinic until someonearrives to pick them up.  Please plan ahead so that sick students can be picked up fromschool within one hour, if possible. Students will remain home from school until they aresymptom free for at least 72 hours after last receiving medication. Upon return to school,we ask that students check in with the nurse prior to returning to class.  

Nebulizer treatments will only be provided in the case of an emergency. Routinenebulizer treatments will not be possible, and alternate methods of care should bediscussed with your pediatrician prior to the start of the school year.

D Physical DistancingStudents traveling in the hallway will be encouraged tosocially distance when possible. Hallways will have clear directions posted to eliminateclose interactions. Classrooms will be set up to allow for as much socialdistancing as possible.  Students will be seated invarious arrangements with spacing provided whenpossible.All-school assemblies and building-wide presentationswill not occur.

D Special EducationCase managers will be the main point of contact forstudents receiving Special Education services.Services will be provided in a pull-out/push-in model asneeded. All IEPs will be reconvened.

TransportationBus routes/services will continue to be provided.Students Pre-K through 2 will be permitted to wear maskson the bus, but not required. (Students grades 3-12 will berequired).Bus drivers and aides will wear masks when socialdistancing is not feasible.We will open windows when possible.Pick-up/Drop-off procedures will be adjusted toaccommodate an increase in families utilizing this option.Individual buildings will provide these plans to families. CleaningClassrooms will be cleaned daily.Classroom materials, supplies, and shared learning

Physical DistancingIn K-6 classrooms, every best effort will be made to maintain stablegroups (children will remain in one classroom for learning, with someexceptions as noted below). There will be ample time for children to usethe restroom and be outside with peers. Elementary teachers are veryexperienced in ensuring movement for children. A stable group is anindividual’s personal collection of people who have been in their 6-footperimeter (these are the people who they usually interact with).

Drinking FountainsDrinking fountains will be used to refill water bottles only. All students need to bring a water bottle labeled with their name  to school each day.  Paper cups will be provided for students who do not have a water bottle.

Students will utilize hand sanitizer or hand washing before entering andafter exiting a special area classroom.Students will have limited access to shared supplies.  When supplies areshared, they will be cleaned and sanitized in between uses.  Students will access the library with their class for lessons as well as tocheck out books.  The library will adhere to the cleaning practices outlinedthroughout this plan between classes.  Books will be sanitized betweenuses.PE classes will utilize outdoor spaces and homeroom classrooms in addition to the gym, as needed.

InstructionGrade level curriculum will be modified to account fortime lost during our spring extended school closure.Frequent assessment of individual skills will occur, bothformally and informally, to ensure we are meeting theneeds of each individual learner.

Whole group, small group, and individual instruction will occur.Shared materials such as science tools, etc. will be sanitized between uses.Explicit guidance and instruction in the area of digital competency will beprovided to prepare for possible extended closures.Field trips will be suspended for the fall of 2020; field trips during secondsemester will be dependent on community transmission.

Special Area ClassesClasses will travel to special area classes with theirhomeroom only.  Homeroom classes will not share special area spaceswith another homeroom with the exception of 6th grade,who will travel to elective classes with other 6th graders.

School Supplies & BelongingsStudents will utilize individual supplies as much aspossible.  There will be no community supplies thisschool year.  Students will keep their belongings in assigned areas of the classroom.

Intervention ServicesStudents will continue to receive intervention servicesin small groups in the intervention classroom, whenpossible. When needed, intervention services will push into theclassroom.

Section 504504 case managers and nurses will review caseloadsand identify students who are medically fragile.  For thestudents identified, 504 teams will convene to conductthe appropriate meeting needed and determine if anychanges are needed to the placement and/or plan.  As isalways the case, parents may request to reconvene the504 team for any reason.  New referrals for Section 504may still be initiated following our typical process.

Food ServicePrepackaged food items and condiments will be served.Staff will be required to wear a face covering.We will utilize single-use paper products as much aspossible.No pin pads will be used. There will be assigned seating in the cafe.Students will wash hands before and after meal service.There will be predetermined entrances and exits to thecafe.Classes coming into the cafe will be staggered to allowfor fewer kids in line.Serving lines will be taped off with one entrance and exitfor each line.There will be no self-serve items.A staff member will distribute juice and milk.Due to the limits on available space, visitors will not beallowed to eat lunch with students.Outside treats, provided by staff or families, are notpermitted.

HorizonsStudents will not attend Horizons Centers.  Students willreceive Horizons programming one day/week at theirhome school site.Horizons classes may be mixed grade levels. Students willattend lunch and special areas at their normal times withtheir homeroom classes.

Health ServicesOur clinic and school staff request an open line ofcommunication between home and school regarding anypossible COVID-19 exposure or symptoms.  Please contactthe nurse directly and as soon as possible if your child orfamily has been exposed.

In the event of a positive COVID-19 case, the District will collaborate with and follow theguidance of St. Charles County Department of Public Health. Students and staff areasked to self-screen at home prior to coming to school each day.  Students exhibitingsymptoms of illness should not attend school and parents should consult theirhealthcare provider and follow CDC considerations regarding their return to school.Symptoms of COVID-19, as currently defined by the CDC, include: 

If a parent is reporting an absence with symptoms, notes will be taken by the mainoffice. Students who enter the sick clinic with symptoms are required to wear a mask.Students who meet the criteria to be sent home ill will remain in the clinic untilsomeone arrives to pick them up or they are able to leave campus.  Please plan aheadso that sick students can be picked up from school within one hour, if possible.Students will remain home from school until they are symptom free for at least 72hours after last receiving medication. Upon return to school, we ask that studentscheck in with the nurse prior to returning to class.

Section 504504 case managers and nurses will review caseloads andidentify students who are medically fragile.  For the studentsidentified, 504 teams will convene to conduct the appropriatemeeting needed and determine if any changes are needed tothe placement and/or plan.  As is always the case, parentsmay request to reconvene the 504 team for any reason.  Newreferrals for Section 504 may still be initiated following ourtypical process.

Social distancing is encouraged and should be followed as much aspractical.All contact with our athletes is to be done under the supervision of a coachas arranged by the coach.Each day, prior to arriving on school grounds, each student, coach, or sponsorwill need to complete a self-assessment at home.Each student, coach, and sponsor will have their temperature taken on-siteeach day before practice. If the temperature is at least 100.4 degrees, theindividual will be sent home and they need to contact their supervisor orcoach.Face coverings are required when social distancing is not feasible.Coaches and sponsors will provide time for students to wash handsthroughout the practice, including during transition times from one drill to thenext.Team drills can take place where players are less than 6 feet apart, but thisshould be minimized to brief one-on-one drills.Most of the practice should be conducted using physical distancing.All equipment used should be disinfected between individual uses (such asweights, helmets, bats, etc.).Locker rooms will be available to student athletes before and after schoolonly.Only one student should be in a bathroom at any given time.All students should bring their own water source and a face covering.Students in small groups are preferable. The weight room can be utilized with social distancing measures in placeas much as possible. Athletes should wear face coverings, and numbersshould be limited to 30 or less at a time.
