The Clemson Wesley Foundation is a ministry of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodis

With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself

before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt

offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased

with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil?

Shall I give my rstborn for my transgression, the fruit of

my body for the sin of my soul?

He has told you,O mortal, what is good;and what does the

Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God?

    Micah 6: 6-8 (NRSV)

Two-a-days are underway here in Clemson as theTigers are preparing for another season of intensecompetition on the gridiron. I remember vividlythose hot August days in Charleston when ourhigh school team (Fort Johnson and later JamesIsland) would practice early in the morning andlate in the afternoon prior to the start of theschool year. After three weeks of battling theheat, humidity and constant contact, we felt likewe were ready to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers!

Like the CU football team, Jad Taylor and I havestarted our own theological two-a-days in antici-pation of another season of intense competitionon the spiritual playing field of Clemson. Wevebeen doing Bible sword drills and playing theolog-ical Jeopardy for at least four hours each morning. In the afternoons, we have our Debate of theDay sessions where, for two hours, we grind

away at each other over the key debates thatwe expect to encounter this fall. Wh at is theproper mode and timing for baptism? Whenshould we turn the other cheek and when is itOK to use violence to defend our neighbor? What is the proper role of women in the life ofthe church? Should Christians be tree huggersor Drill Here, Drill Now advocates? Ne edlessto say, we are whipping ourselves into shape!

All joking aside, Jad and I have not been spend-ing our days doing these things, even though wedo expect to encounter these and other suchquestions in the weeks and months ahead. I mustconfess, however, that I really enjoy the debates, especially those that involve current eventsor controversial topics. These debates usuallybecome like a sport for me, and when you are as

competitive as I am you are always looking fora way to beat your opponent! It is no differentthan the Oklahoma or Bull Ring drills weused to do in high school football years ago.

It is on these occasions when I imagine the Devilsmiling and saying, Ive got Lane exactly whereI want him to be! Rather than focusing on thekey and central themes that define my faithand worldview, I often lose myself by exertingenergy and attention on things that either donot matter in Gods overall scheme or that willremain a mystery til Kingdom com e. As onebook that I read several years ago describes it, abiography of my life could be entitled :Adventuresin Missing the Point.

Since the beginning of time, we human beingshave struggled with being distracted, with notbeing able to see the forest for the trees, with

missing the point. Adam and Eve, Abraham andSarah, the Israelites, Jesus disciples and theearliest churches all had a difficult time keepingGods Big Picture in mind. And what might thatBig Picture be? We are created by a God who desiresour love and devotion through our loving one another. It is stated many different ways in Scripture, but Micahs is one of my favorite. What doesit mean to be a child of God, the prophet asks?

First, you walk humbly with the you. Second, you love and offerof Gods other creatures. And lamake those things right that, forhave gone wrong.

Jad and I, along with the leadershcommitted to creating a place whuman beings like us can be remBig Picture. No doubt, at some pyoull find us doing Bible sword theological Jeopardy or engagingof the Day. When you notice oustronger and our faces getting reinterrupt us and invite us to readmore time.

    Jumping jacks anyone?

Looking for More Monthly SupportersOver the years God has inspired a number of folks to support this ministry in waysthat have enabled us to reach more students and touch more lives. When I firstarrived in 2001, CW typically received less than $5,000 a year in outside gifts, and these monies that were used to supplement the existing resources providedby Clemson UMC and United Methodist churches from across the state. Today,we have to raise nearly $45,000 a year just to balance our annual budget! Andthis amount does not include the funds that we need to take our annual missiontrips or to complete our current Student Center renovation program.

Thankfully, a small number of alumni, parents of students, CUMC members andothers support this ministry monthly. While one-time gifts are always a huge bless-ing no matter the size, this monthly support allows me to plan more effectively, especially with respect to staffing.

As the new academic year approaches, I hope that you will consider becoming amonthly supporter of CW. Thanks once again for all of your support - both financialand otherwise. Jad and I could not do much of anything without your help!

It seems that at thistime of year, thingsare always on the up.Parents are gearing upto send their childrenoff. The football teamis warming up for arousing season of ACCfootball. Families arewrapping up thoseprecious final momentsof vacations. Students

are staying up allhours of the night untilsummer freedom runsdry and they move upin school. The general buzz in Clemson andall-around is on the upand up.

All of this up-nessproves to be quite astrong, driving forcein each of our lives. Doyou feel this like I do? There is this sense that we must shake off oursummertime relaxation and shape up for what this new season brings.Id be willing to argue that this trend is most fully embodied in that ofa shiny new college freshman.

A sky diving club you say? Offering free pizza? Why, of course Ill join!

Nine intramural sports teams? Playing three hours each night? Id be afool to miss out! Wait Mom, what is this strange no word you speakof? Im here to experience everything, all the time.

Through these very situations I saw how God began whispering for meto slow down. Psalm 46:10 implores us to be still even while the restof the earth teems with activity. Through these events and words, Godsparked my interest in pursuing a regular Sabbath, or time of ceasing(even from my oft-worshiped cell phone). God seemed to be sayingthat I was actually not important enough to spend a day devoted toHim. What an incredibly humbling realization!

My prayer for all of you in this joyously up-filled time is that youbegin to examine this question: Are you called to be swept up in allthe world has to offer or to simply slow down and spend time withHim who made it all and certainly made it good?

Three Special WomenThroughout the Bible, women have always played a crucial role in theunfolding story of Gods people. Some scholar s have argued that boththe financing of Jesus ministry (Lk 8:1-3) and the later expansion of thechurch across the Mediterrean region can be attributed to one primaryfactor: the generosity of women. The same could be said for CW overthe years.Year after year students have been blessed by the care, nurtureand counsel of many wonderful women. This fall the CW communitywill once again be blessed by the weekly contributions of three women:Susan Fagan, Candace Leuck and Janice Lanham.

The daughter of a Baptist minister, Susan Fa-gan has been caring officially and unofficiallyfor students for decades. She and her husbandCharles have opened their home to hundredsof students over the years, adopting manyof them for a lifetime. While Susan recentlyretired from the Redfern Health Center, shecontinues her outreach to students throughCW and other groups.

Several years ago Candace Leuck sent Lanean email inquiring about how she might be ableto serve...and shes been serving ever since!Candace, a CPA and professor of Accountingat CU, is chair of he CUMC Campus MinistryTeam and also serves on the CW Board. A fix-ture on Sunday night, Candace has also joinedus on Fall Retreat and the Spring Break trip tothe Bahamas in recent years.

A native of Greenville, Janice Lanhamhasbecome an integral part of the CW community

over the last few years. A professor of Nur s-ing at CU, Janice gives oversight to the CUGospel Choir, a group for which she servedas Director during her undergraduate days atClemson. In the coming year, Janice will serveas CWs Faculty Advisor and Co-Team Leaderof the Spring Break trip to the Bahamas, rolesthat she has filled in substance if not form overthe past year.

I am so indebted to these three amazingwomen, notes Lane. Not only do they offersupport and wisdom for me, but they all haveopened up their hearts, lives and homes for somany students. Our students just love them!It is folks like these that have always made CWa special place over the years.

A Biosystems Engineering major from Huntsville,AL, Katherine Cragon has brightened theClemson campus with her smile since arrivingthree years ago. As a senior it is my hope that Iwill continue to strengthen my relaionship withGod and be intentional about investing my timein friends and not only school, Katherine shared.I hope that every new student who steps into ourcommunity will be challenged to grow in theirfaith as much as I have the past three years.

Justin Galloway was born and raised not farfrom Clemson in Easley. A lover of the outdoorsand long-time camp counselor at Asbury HillsCamp, Justin, a senior Chemical Engineeringmajor, is one of the many humble servant-leaderswho have called CW home over the years. Com-ing into a new year of school, especially freshmanyear, is always a little bit frightening and exciting, noted Justin. This year I am looking forward towelcoming everyone in the same way that I waswelcomed, like a new family member.

Laura-Allen Kerlin, a senior Communicationsmajor, has been active in CW since her first se-mester and served as Chair of the Joel Team lastyear. A native of the New Orleans area, Laura-Allen brings an excitement and energy to CW

that is infectious. I am so excited about this yearand the opportunity to strengthen old friendshipsand to make new ones. This year is shaping up tobe a great one with exciting trips and retreats, football, and missions together both in Clemsonand outside! exclaimed Laura-Allen.

After studying abroad in Spain last semester,Me-lissa Whitson returns to Clemson for her lastyear this fall. A Language and International Healthmajor, Melissa, from Conyers, GA, is known forher sharp wit and caring heart. Returning toClemson after a semester abroad is somethingIve been looking forward to all summer, offeredMelissa. I am especially excited about making thisyear one of the most memorable and enjoyableof my time in Clemson, and its always more funwith new faces and new friends. I cant wait forit to begin!

Bryan Galloway, a senior Biological Sciencesmajor from Summerville has made a huge impacton CW during his three years at Clemson. AsChair of the Joel Team, Bryan is really lookingforward to reconnecting with my old friends andmeeting all of the new people who are cominginto the family of Clemson Wesley When I startedmy freshman year, I didnt even know that CWexisted until a friend invited me one Sunday night.I found a place of true community and fellowshipand some of my best friends at CW.
