Back in my high-school, teen years (class of ‘62), if I had been asked “Who is king?” I would have unhesitatingly answered, “Elvis Presley.” Today, in my Medicare years I would give you a different answer. Of course, our American usage of the word king differs from that of places or nations who have monarchs.

For most of us Americans, the word king refers to who is important to us as someone with whom we wish to be associated or who would be a model for living our lives. So-called celebrities and entertainers still are the kings (or queens) in people’s lives. The sixteen year-old Justin Bieber certainly commanded the hearts of many girl-childs two weeks ago at the Wolstein Center. As for me, I will always be a fan of Diana Ross and The Supremes.

This weekend, the Church bids us to answer the question of who is our “King.” Not money, power or entertainment abilities, but is there a person whose lifestyle we want to imitate? Is there someone for whom and with whom we wish to be associated? For me, it has taken about fifty years to go from Elvis to Jesus, from gyrating hips and perceived sexy moves to trying to love God and neighbor. And I am still working on that relationship to make Christ to be the King in my heart. This weekend’s gospel passage has a criminal being executed on a cross requesting, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” At that moment, Jesus on the cross next to this criminal did not appear to the world to be a king. That thief or criminal, however, had made the decision that Jesus was his king.

Each of us has to decide to accept either what the world at that moment considers to be king, or to accept Christ the King. Father WinkelFather WinkelFather WinkelFather Winkel

and as is our custom we will begin the day with Mass. Again this year, Fr. Racco and parishioners of Holy Rosary will join us in giving thanks and praise to God for all his blessings upon us.

Please come to the 9 a.m. Mass and then stay afterward for some coffee, goodies and fellowship with our Cluster Parish. If you are able to bring goodies to share, please drop them off in Mary’s Room before Mass.

This would also be a wonderful opportunity to bring non-perishable food items for our Pantry for the Poor and Needy. A long winter is before us. We’d like to be ready to respond to those who come to us hungry.

When I was growing up there was an interesting crucifix at the end of the hallway in our school. Unlike the traditional ones that showed Jesus in agony on the cross, this one stood about six feet high and had a stately body of Jesus on it. He looked straight ahead, and he was clothed in priestly robes. He wore a crown not of thorns, but a royal crown of gold. As young children, we would all run past that crucifix on our way out the door to the playground. I imagine that the images sticks in my mind because of the daily viewing for so many years, and for the fact that it was so different from the smaller ones that graced each classroom.

Like every Passion story in the four Gospels, Luke's includes the description of Jesus' purported crime: that he was the King of the Jews. While the Romans may have considered him an insurrectionist and the chief priests railed against him as a blasphemer, Jesus truly is a king-just not the kind that we, or his earliest followers, expected. As universal king, Jesus exercises the same mandate held by the ancient kings of Israel: to care for the least ones and to protect those who have no power in this world. While Israel's kings were judged on how well they cared for the poor, this King is both judge and ruler par excellence. Like that crucifix in the school hallway, his throne is the cross, and from it he dispenses life, not condemnation.

Like the thief in today's Gospel, we are supplicants before that throne. We kneel before the cross from which the eternal King reigns, and we plead like the thief, "Jesus, remember me when

you come into your kingdom." And he replies to us, as he does to all who seek him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." ©2010 Liturgical Publications Inc

Jesus did not come down from the cross to retaliate against those who were mocking Him. He gave His life to forgive them and each of us.

In families, the angry word easily flies, fueled more by fatigue and frustration than by a deliberate desire to hurt. Most often we don’t even realize the impact.

In our families, pray for God’s help and seek forgiveness rather than retaliating or holding on to resentments.

The Women’s Guild invites you to participate in its annual “Giving Tree” event which provides Christmas gifts for less fortunate children in our diocese. The tree will be on display near the Holy Family Shrine in the front of the church from next Saturday, November 27, through Sunday, December 12, and will be decorated with colorful gift tags for children from infants to teens.

Please take a tag, purchase a gift, wrap it, attach the tag securely to the package, and place it under the tree NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12. This will permit sufficient time for the gifts to be delivered before Christmas.

As in previous years, gifts will be sent to the Fatima Family Center where the staff will distribute the gifts according to the “wish lists” that have been submitted to them. NOTE: IF YOU ARE GIVING A CLOTHING ITEM, PLEASE MARK THE SIZE ON THE TAG.

Again this year we will also collect your donations of NEW baby items (bottles, sleepers, onesies, sheets, receiving blankets, diapers, etc.) which will be delivered to Birthright, Inc., where they will be distributed to needy pregnant women to help them prepare for the births of their babies. New or gently used maternity tops (any size) are also needed. These items must be UNWRAPPED and placed in the cradle near the tree.

Your generosity in past years has been truly appreciated. If you have any questions, please call Marilyn Buckley (216.382.0707).

The Adult Choir of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish is seeking men and women with “good” singing voices to volunteer to be Cantors for the weekend Masses. Individuals interested in this ministry must be willing to participate in an audition session with Gail Shirley, our Director of Music.

We’re beginning to practice for Christmas. If singing is your gift, won’t you please consider an advance gift to your parish and come to sing with us for Christmas and beyond. Please stop by the choir loft after Sunday Mass to see Gail or call her at 216.321.3694 to arrange a time to audition.

This relatively new apostolate was developed to serve as a prayer support for parishioners who are experiencing personal crises of any kind.

If you would like to be part of this new apostolate or if you have needs you would like to have included in the prayer intentions for our volunteers, call Tricia Brunton (216,798.5777) or e-mail her at [email protected].

The school children are eagerly anticipating the Thanksgiving holiday. Many classes are involved in prayers, poems and the religious and historical aspects of Thanksgiving. Many pieces of writing are on display in the hallways. What is heart-warming for me, as principal, is to read the wonderful things our students are thankful for. It’s nice to see faith, family and friends mentioned often. (Turkey and food were tops, too). The school will gather together on Tuesday, the 23rd , for a Thanksgiving prayer service. We did collect food for the Cleveland Food Bank and the Cleveland Younglives organizations. My sincere appreciation to our students (and parents) for their generosity. Their compassion for others is remarkable!!

Look for our school’s table at the Mission Fair November 20 and 21. Several of our teachers will be on hand these two days. Stop and visit with us.
