Millions Return toBangladesh

CALCUTTA(UPI) The number

of East Bengali refugees that

have been repatriatedBangladesh has passed the 3

million mark, or about one third

the total refugee population in

India, the Ministry of

Rehabilitation said today.

The evacuees definitely have

crossed the mark, C.L. Deb,

deputy secretary, said, We are

sending back more than 200,000per day, of which West Bengal

state alone is sending more than

one lakh (100,000).

As of Saturday night, Deb said,

2,969,739 East Bengalis had

gone back to their homeland.

Some 610,000 had returned on

their own in the first two weeks

after the war, while most of the

others crossed the border in

government transportation

provided in the joint Indian-

Bangladesh repatriation program

that began Jan 1.
