INTRO REPORTS

It is my pleasure to present my fifth President’s report. It’s was an amazing year and lots of things happened at Auckland Deaf Society.

Firstly, I would like to pay my respects to Laurie Schischka who passed away on October 17th, 2014. He was a life member and patron of Auckland Deaf Society. He was instrumental in the development of the Society.

I was invited to attend and celebrate the Hawkes Bay Deaf Club’s 50th Anniversary. It happened to be on the same weekend as the Napier Art Deco Festival. It was a great weekend!

Redevelopment of the new clubroom downstairs looks great. We opened the new clubroom with a Maori Blessing by Deaf Kaumatua, Michael Wi. Dr Peter Haynes, who is Albert-Eden Local Board Chair joined us and we are grateful to the Local Board for their continued support.

Norman Norris and the “A Team” worked tirelessly on our properties in Rocklands Avenue, painting the inside to raise the value of the houses. Both 20 and 22 Rocklands Ave were sold for very good prices. A huge thank you to all those who were involved, we really appreciate it!

I would also like to express my appreciation to our members for their continued support of ADS. Many thanks to the ADS board for their time and commitment. A big thank you to the Trustees of ADS Foundation Trust who carry the responsibility for the overall financial stability of the ADS building.

I look forward to seeing you all at Deaf Club.

Here we are once again, at the end of another year for Auckland Deaf Society Inc. We have been very busy with our own transformation in 2014. We have completed the restructure of ADS into two separate entities: Auckland Deaf Society Inc. and Auckland Deaf Society Foundation Trust. We have also seen the establishment of Potters Park Event Centre. The renovations and change of layout to our club building is designed to better suit these initiatives. I wonder if there has ever been such a busy time for ADS than over the last few years.

To make these changes successful, it has required the patience and effort of many people. First and foremost, the wonderful ADS Inc. staff have managed the change of office space with great professionalism and support for the vision of ADS. The ADS board have also shown great commitment and focus to make sure the plans we made were implemented carefully and in the best interest of our members, both now and in the future. Finally my thanks go to you, ADS members, for attending meetings, volunteering for groups, and contributing your ideas and opinions in an intelligent, dedicated and often passionate way. The fact that so many members positively contributed to the changes we are now completing shows how strong our club is. Thank you.

Of course we are not finished yet! There are still a few more changes to come, and we look forward to developments around the Sign Language Hub, as well as other improvements. We are also building a stronger relationship with Kelston Deaf Education Centre that will see their Tu Kokiri transition students use ADS as a base. Overall, we will focus on consolidating the improvements already made and converting them into the results we all want to see.

During 2014 we had many additional and unique expenses including moving offices,redeveloping the clubrooms, IT upgrades and much more. Whilst this has impacted on the financial position we have much better financial stability than previously. The board and staff work incredibly hard to improve the financial stability of the organisation whilst moving forward and developing. We are pleased with the 2014 results and plans for 2015, and confident that this path will finally deliver a decent chance of an operating surplus in 2015 for the first time in many years. We should finally start to see the fruits from our hard work and commitment.

As we look ahead to an exciting year, I would like to encourage you to continue to support ADS Inc. You can do this in many ways: Come along on Friday nights attend special events, get involved in one of the many sports and special interest clubs that are part of ADS, come to meetings and help us make the best decisions. If you really want to have a say on how ADS Inc. builds on our new growth, then consider standing for the ADS Inc. Board in the upcoming AGM. ADS Inc. needs leadership to make the most of our club. If you think you can help with this, please put your hand up. If you are unsure what is involved please approach any of your board members and ask them.

Here’s to a great 2015 for everyone involved in ADS Inc.

During 2014 Auckland Deaf Society continued to implement changes to facilitate the long term growth and stability of the organisation.

A major renovation to improve facilities and layout of the existing building by Auckland Deaf Society Foundation Trust resulted in an accessible community space for the Deaf Community with meeting rooms, multi-media equipment, a kitchen and bar. We are delighted to welcome multiple user groups into the community space.

OPERATIONS MANAGER’S REPORTFiona Brennan

Exciting developments are ahead of us as we plan to expand our capability as a hub for NZSL culture and activities over the coming year. Three key areas: events, employment and education form part of the strategic plan. Our valued partnerships and collaboration with key organisations and individuals in the Deaf community are vital in achieving our aims.

Staffing changes in 2014 have increased the capacity of management to deliver operations for the Deaf community. Investment in IT hardware, use of cloud applications and social media has also led to increased operational efficiency. We gratefully acknowledge the contribution of our volunteers who have donated their time and skills during 2014.

Over the coming year we will be working to stabilise and grow our revenue base after a period of change and investment in infrastructure, staffing and systems. Diverse income streams include: A monthly distribution from the Foundation Trust, income from trading activities (NZSL classes, lease income, membership fees, venue hire and bar sales), grants and donations. This revenue ensures that the work of previous generations continues to make an impact in the future.

Our popular NZSL courses provided 158 students with the opportunity to engage with a new cultural and linguistic community, and gain an understanding of the importance of being able to communicate with Deaf people, whether they be colleagues, clients, friends or family members.

In this way Auckland Deaf Society Inc contributes to preserving and promoting one of New Zealand’s official languages and helps bridge the communication gap between hearing and Deaf people.

Our focus is to enhance the student experience for all levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced) by offering NZSL-related activities and learning opportunities signing such as Sign Coffee Club, Communication Games, Deaf Deaf World and Fingerspelling Triathlons. These events were organised in partnership with the NZSL Tutors Northern branch.

A new curriculum and teaching resources for a ‘NZSL at Work’ programme is being developed to target to businesses and organisations to improve their ability to interact with customers, staff and colleagues who use NZSL.

New initiatives in 2014 gave our NZSL Tutors the opportunity to participate in resource development. Our tutors also attended the NZSL Teachers Association conference to develop leadership skills, participate in the development of teaching techniques and familiarise themselves with the new ‘TeachSign’ materials.

Raising the profile of the organisation benefits all areas of our operations by communicating how Auckland Deaf Society Inc meets the needs of different groups that interact with us.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONSTaryn Banks

There have been many highlights in 2014, including a record breaking Friday night Deaf Club when over 230 people attended. We had 45 visitors from America, 35 of whom came on a cruise ship and another ten who travelled from Queenstown. We also had nine visitors from Denmark on the same night. It was wonderful to see three different sign languages being used and great to see that Auckland Deaf Society is a recognised “must see” destination for Deaf visitors from overseas.

Other memorable events throughout the year include Turbo Trivia, the KDEC quiz, NZSL Week “Superheroes and Superstars” party, the Muffin competition, Movies, Family picnic, Deaf My Kitchen Rules, International Night of the Deaf, School Holiday programme, Giant games, Children’s Christmas party and many more.

Our sports and recreation clubs have been very active. Some of these groups have organised events for our Friday night programme.

Thank you to all the businesses who have supported us by by offering discounts to Auckland Deaf Society members.

I would like to thank our volunteers who have helped out at events, behind the bar and in the office.

2014 Marketing Milestones

• Our contemporary new website went live in 2014 presenting an updated logo for Auckland Deaf Society Inc. Imagery is active and engaging and more information is accessible in NZSL.

• We are developing the use of our social media channels, especially Facebook and including more NZSL Video

• We launched a public relations programme to inform the wider community of key activities. We have been successful in gaining media coverage of the Blessing of our new clubrooms, our “Include a Charity” bequest campaign and the “Giving Tuesday” campaign. Stories were published in the Central and Western Leader and numerous online news streams.

ADS FISHING CLUB At our AGM in July, new committee members were elected. John Schishka stepped down as Chairman. We are grateful for his hard work! Thanks also to our organisers, who do a fantastic job planning safe fishing trips. We planned 10 trips. Most were fantastic, but four were cancelled due to bad weather. We had a great time socialising together, and being out at sea.

ADS DEAF OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUBA group of adventurous ramblers (age 11 – 63 years) faced really challenging tramps, hiking in different places including Raetahinga Point, Kauaeranga Valley, Watikakere Range, Upper Huia Dam Track, Lone Kauri Road, Watawheta Valley/Hut Kaimai-Mamaku Forrest Park. We also had a fantastic day at the Tough Guy/Gal Challenge Mud Run.

ADS SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB There have been many fun events in 2014 including, St Patrick’s Day, an Easter colouring competition, Mid-year Xmas lunch, games, quizzes and celebrating special “Deafy” birthdays, four 70ths and one 80th plus the clubs 25th Anniversary! Excursions included a picnic at Parakai and a Christmas buffet lunch at McHughs.

AUCKLAND DEAF YOUTH GROUPDuring the year, we held some really successful events such as an Easter Hunt at Cornwall Park where lots of children hunted for chocolate Easter eggs. The Glow in the Dark Night was an awesome evening with glow necklaces, bracelets and Taboo games for various age groups.

ADS LAWN BOWLS CLUBOur club members enjoyed playing from spring through to autumn. Thank you everyone for supporting our Irish-themed evening at Deaf Club for St Patricks Day. It was good to see some of our members dressed up in green outfits.

ADS TENPIN BOWLING CLUBCongratulations to Colleen Norris who was awarded The Terry Kane Shield. In Sydney, the Tasman Cup was won by 12 Deaf Kiwis! We enjoyed meeting Deaf Australians and Argentinians at the Tenpin Bowling Open Championship. The Auckland Deaf Tenpin Bowling Club hosted the International Tri-Nations and National Deaf Championship. We all enjoyed ourselves!

ADS INDOOR BOWLS CLUBOver Easter, 7 players travelled to Christchurch to compete in the NZ Deaf Indoor Bowls Championship, We had great time catching up with other players from all over NZ. The prize giving was lovely, and most of our ADS members received awards. Well done!

ADS 8 BALL POOL CLUBWe joined NZ Deaf 8 Ball teams from around the country to play against Trans-Tasman competition. Australia won the competition with top points.

Potters Park Events Centre had its official launch on the 4th September. Mayor Len Brown and representatives of the Albert- Eden Local Board kindly officiated. The event was well attended by our VIP’s and the Deaf community. Lee Elgar, the Events Centre Manager, is leading the start-up and development of this new business. Occupancy and income is increasing with a broad range of users including non-profit and community groups, business seminars and training, party and events hire. Albert- Eden Local board strongly support the venue and we collaborate with them on a number of local community initiatives.

• We consolidated our database and created ‘The Butterfly Effect’ a quarterly supporters newsletter.

• We joined the ‘Include a Charity’ campaign to remind ordinary New Zealanders to consider leaving a bequest to Auckland Deaf Society in their will.

• We joining ‘Giving Tuesday’, a national online Christmas awareness campaign.

• We have developed some wonderful supportive relationships with corporate supporters who have generously donated gifts-in-kind this year.

We have been successful with several funding applications for projects and operational costs. We gratefully acknowledge the following grants which have assisted us hugely in achieving our goals for the Deaf Community in 2014.

The deficit in the final line of the reports was created by a number of factors. Firstly, due to new facilities being built for the Deaf community, ADS Inc commenced paying rent and OPEX to ADSFT in 2014, secondly several one off costs due to the moving offices. A reduction taken in the distribution from ADSFT also affected the bottom line. Auckland Deaf Society Foundation Trust retains responsibility to fund ADS Inc.

However, with new structures and policies taking place, regular monitoring of the budget, and increased income streams due to sub leases and additional fundraising across the board, I am looking forward to 2015 and a profit margin at the end of the financial year.

We have also received funding from the Auckland Council Creative Communities Fund and Endeavour Community Foundation. We would like to acknowledge these organisations for their support.

We also obtained a MSD Grant, $1,500 was used in administration expenses by Auckland Deaf Society and $28,500 was paid to the organisation who will complete the project. We look forward to this project coming to fruition in the near future.
