    Chapter 3 Notes

    > 3.3 Fibre Channel Switch Notes

ETERNUS Disk storage systems Server Connection Guide for AIX

    14 Copyright 2010 FUJITSU LIMITED

    P3AM-2832-05ENZ0

    3.3 Fibre Channel Switch Notes

Which Fibre Channel switches can be connected to the ETERNUS Disk storage system varies

depending on the connection environment (server OS and ETERNUS Disk storage system

model). Refer to the "Server Support Matrix for FC-SWITCH" before starting.

When using a Fibre Channel switch (ETERNUS SN200 series, Brocade DCX series) between

the server and ETERNUS Disk storage system, refer to the "ETERNUS Disk storage systems

Server Connection Guide (Fibre Channel) Fibre Channel Switch Settings" for help in preparing

and setting up the Fibre Channel switch.

If AIX server is connected to a Fibre Channel switch, the Fibre Channel switch port link speed

    must be set.

Set the link speed of the Fibre Channel switch ports according to the link speeds of the

server-side Fibre Channel cards, as follows:

If the devices being connected together both have automatically set link speeds, the resulting

link speed may be less than optimal.

The default link speed setting for Fibre Channel switch ports is "Automatic".

The link speed setting for true IBM Fibre Channel cards is always "Automatic".

The link speed setting of a true IBM Fibre Channel card cannot be changed to other than

"Automatic", so the Fibre Channel switch port link speeds must be fixed to match the actual

speed of the server-side Fibre Channel cards, as per the above table, so that the same link

    speed is always used.

    3.4 LVM Notes

Disable [Bad Block Relocation] for a LVM logical volume that was created on ETERNUS Disk

storage systems' LUN. Also, [Bad Block Relocation] must be disabled for the logical volume in

which file system logs are stored.

    15 Copyright 2010 FUJITSU LIMITED

    P3AM-2832-05ENZ0

3.5 Server Startup and Power Supply Control Notes

Before turning the server on, check that the ETERNUS Disk storage systems and Fibre Channel

switches are all "Ready". If the server is turned on and they are not "Ready", the server will not

be able to recognize the ETERNUS Disk storage systems.

Also, when the ETERNUS Disk storage system power supply is being controlled by a con-

nected server, make sure that the ETERNUS Disk storage system does not shut down before

the connected servers. Similarly, the Fibre Channel switches must also be turned off after the

connected servers have been shut down.

If turned off, data writes from the running server cannot be saved to the ETERNUS Disk storage

systems, and already saved data may also be affected.

3.6 VERITAS Volume Manager (VxVM) Notes

Refer to "8.4 Installing the FJspio Package"and install the FJspio package on the AIX system

    before installing VxVM.

Install VERITAS Array Support Library after installing VxVM.

    Installing VxVM

VxVM should be installed as specified in its accompanying documentation.

To use VxVM, set the Fibre Channel card parameters that are specified in the VxVM

    documentation.

When using VxVM 4.0 or VxVM 5.0

If the ETERNUS Disk storage systems are connected to a configuration that uses the VxVM,

the VERITAS Array Support Library (ASL) will also need to be installed.

Which version of VERITAS ASL is required will depend on the storage system and version of

VxVM used. Download the VERITAS ASL version that matches your environment from the

    following Symantec web-site.

Refer to the Symantec web-site for VERITAS ASL installation details.

When using VxVM 5.1ASL does not need to be installed.

3.7 VERITAS Cluster Server (VCS) Notes

VERITAS Cluster Server should be installed according to the directions given in the

documentation provided with VERITAS Cluster Server.

Perform the settings described in this document only for a VIOS.

When setting the VIOS, the root privilege for the VIOS environment is required.

Make sure to install ETERNUS Multipath Driver 2.0 on the VIOS.

When installing software on a VIOS, the root privilege for the VIOS environment is required.

Only a virtual SCSI adapter connection is supported.

Assign hdisk to the virtual SCSI adapter.

    Server

    8.1 Installing the Drivers

Install the necessary drivers and patches following the Fibre Channel card installation guide.

    8.2 Setting the Driver Parameters

After the driver has been installed, its parameters need to be set.

Perform the following procedure to get the server to recognize the Fibre Channel card.

    Procedure

1 Use the "cfgmgr" command to force the server to recognize the Fibre Channel

    card configuration.

2 Use the "lsdev" command to check the resulting configuration.

If there is a "fscsiN" entry (where "N" is a number) corresponding to the Fibre Channel

card displayed, delete the fscsiNdevice temporarily using the "rmdev" command to

    change the fscsiNdevice parameter.

The deleted fscsiNdevice will be recreated after rebooting or at the next "cfgmgr"

    command execution.

Enter the fscsi number to delete for "N".

3 Use the "smit" command to set the driver parameters.

The [System Management] menu is displayed.

    9.3 Setting Logical Units

Set the parameters for the LUNs that are recognized by the VIOS.

Perform the following procedure using the padmin user account.

    Procedure

1 Use the "chdev" command to set the reserve policy.

Enter the hdisk number to set for "N".

2 Use the "lsdev" command to check the configured settings.

Enter the hdisk number to set for "N".

    Chapter 11 Creating Volumes

Create a volume group, logical volume and file system.

    11.1 Creating the Volume Groups

To create logical volumes, use the "smit" command.

    Procedure

    1 Execute the "smit" command.

The [System Management] menu is displayed.

2 Select in the following order:

    (1) [System Storage Management (Physical & Logical Storage)

    (2) [Logical Volume Manager]

    (3) [Volume Group]

    (4) [Add a Volume Group]

The [Add a Volume Group] window will appear.

LVM on the VIOS is not supported. Do not perform any of the procedures

described in this chapter on a VIOS.

    3 Specify the following items.

Specify any name for the [VOLUME GROUP name].

Be sure to specify the [PHYSICAL VOLUME names].

4 After the settings are completed, exit the "smit" command.

5 Check the contents of the new volume group.

Use the "lsvg" command to discover the number of physical partitions (the "Total PPs"

value). This is required in "11.2 Creating the Logical Volumes" (page 29).

The [Add a Logical Volume] window will appear.

    4 Specify the following items.

Specify any name for the [Logical volume NAME].

Specify the [Number of LOGICAL PARTITIONS], according to the following formula.

Also, when creating a file system, a Journal Log is also created on the same disk, so be

sure to leave at least one logical partition in the Volume Group.

Regarding [Enable BAD BLOCK relocation?], be sure to specify "no".

5 After the settings are completed, exit the "smit" command.

6 Check the contents of the created logical volume.

If the logical volume name is "raid_lv6", execute the command as follows:

Logical volume capacity = logical partition size number of logical partitions

    # lslv raid_lv6

    Chapter 12 SAN Boot

If a logical unit (LUN) of the ETERNUS Disk storage systems is used as a boot disk, refer to

"Server Support Matrix" to check the server environment.

When using a LUN as a boot disk, make sure that the LUN has enough capacity to install the

OS in the ETERNUS Disk storage system.

    Only single-path configurations are supported.
