The auction was a huge success.The bidding got fast and furious onsome of the items such as the 930tool kit, the titanium parts fromAl's car and the key to the gloveboxdoor Michael successfully bid for.We had a good time and our coffersgot a nice injection of cash.Thanks again to Bob Russo for agreat show.

THE ALL NEV 924S,by Bill O'Connell

This is the issue you allhave been waiting for, all aboutthe new 924S and my trip toAtlanta to drive it. PorscheCars North America decided tore-intorduce the 924 to theAmerican market and invitedselected editors to Atlanta todrive the car (there were 10there, 2 per car). They feelthere is a place for a $19,900.00Porsche and they are most likelycorrect. With a stripped 944 nowat mid 20*s and the new 4 valveprobably getting close to 30, the924S should prove to be a strongseller. The car for all intentslooks just like the 924 of oldwith the dash from the *84 944.The biggest difference is thepower now comming from a realPorsche engine. The exact onefound in the 944 and contrary torumor, it is not de-tuned. Intheory because of the lower cd itwill go faster than a 944, hencethe new 4 valve. We started witha talk by Martha McKinley fromPCNA, with coffee and danish.She showed us a spiffy movie andthen we went over the car forawhile. To no one's surprise, wewere all itching to get goingespecially after Eric, a PeachState member offered to let usslip into a PGA autocross.Martha allowed as we could run ifwe promised to only take one runeach (sure, no problem ...). Ourdriving day consisted of theautocross, a drive north on somewinding roads to meet for lunchat a restaurant then drive backto return about 4 or so. I droveour car first, and because I havea '83 944, normal driving showedlittle difference between the twocars, my test car was even GuardsRed so except for the skinnyfenders, I might have been inmine. The trip to the autocrosswas uneventful city driving (aswas the autocross Martha), butonce on the track I found howmuch the rear lifts and how easyyou can hang out the tail. Inspirited driving, the softersuspension (I have KONI gas

adjustable on all 4 corners), thenarrower tires/rims (195/65 on 6"rims vs 215/60 and 245/50 on 7"rims), and a 3" narrower track,the difference showed up. Thisis all correctable of course.The experience was a good one,and one that a normal prospectivebuyer is not likely to encounter.They didn't time our runs so Ican't comment on that but the carseemed like it would be a lot funat these events. For the mostpart, the people at the eventwere pretty excited about seeingpre-production Porsches. Fromthere, we headed north with onlyone encounter with Georgia'sfinest. The Passport alerted usto our visitor and we reactedpromptly, warning the rest of theconvoy. Unfortunately a newfound friend in a 924 Turbo wasnot as quick and they got on hiscase in no time. At this point,we found an exit and took theback way. The rest of the trip upwas beautiful and the back roadsuper. Most of the crew waswaiting for us at the restauranthaving taken more inter-state.Their waiting had nothing to dowith the fact that I had been

entrusted with all the lunch

money I'm sure. After a supersouthern family style Sundaylunch/supper, we headed south andto balance our autocross

excitement of the morning, DaveWeber, my co-driver fromMinnesota showed me all helearned the prior week indriver's school in California. Iwill admit at one point my eyesgot very large in a long downhill sweeper as he proved againthat the suspension is a tadsoft. We returned to the hotelwith the car in one piece, nodents, motor still running, etcand regretfully gave back thekeys. My impression? Mostlypositive. The major flaw Ifound, as you probably noticed,was the suspension, in factduring our post-mortum, we allagreed that to be the only thingworth bitching about. It seemsmore like a Datsun 300ZX than aPorsche with all the roll andlean. Other than that would Ibuy one? Well, I still like thebulging fenders but for thosethat like the cleaner lines ofthe 924, I would not hesitate torecommend one. I would stronglysuggest that you order it withthe stiffer suspension and upondelivery you trundle down to oneof our advertisers to purchasesome bigger tires and rims. Ifanyone is interested in a copy ofthe PGNA tech specs whichcompares the 924S and 944, dropme a line. In the mean time, thecars are at the dealers so youcan see and drive them now. This

is going to be a popular car.

Well, the article you allhave been waiting for is in thisissue. By now most of you knowthe 9243 is in the dealershowrooms for your inspection andall the major monthlies have astory on it. As I mentioned, Ihave the official tech sheetwhich compares the 9243/944 onmajor issues - motor, suspension,dimensions, etc. Drop me a lineif you're interested in a copy.

Heckman's rally went well andI think all who attended had agood time - even those few whosaw more of the country thanothers. Vicki and I were smart.We worked a checkpoint which keptus on speaking terms and frombeing #24 on the list. There isanother one planned for this fallso watch for more info.

For those that showed

interest, the Quattro has beenreturned and looks like a newcar, complete with new door. Ithought Guards Red was red untilI parked next to the 944. Ohwell, it brightens up thedriveway. Anyone with asuggestion for a license platefor it drop me a line. Mychoices to date have been

rejected by the saviours ofmorality. The winner will getsomething, probably worth morethan the stuff I got sucked intoat the auction.

Speaking of the auction, I'msure you know by now, it was ourbest to date. The club earned(?)in excess of $200.00 and most ofus had a good time trying toavoid Bob Russo's gaze for fearof presenting the next bid, andlaughing at those Bob snagged.

I am thinking of puttingtogether a 'how to' forinstalling a roll bar in a 944.Bob Lamb, having gone through ithimself, saved me hours, no makethat days, by directing my effort

as well as helping. Bob Russofrom Holbert Racing had onecustom made for me (it can now beordered as a standard bar) whichwith the proper tools and awilling helper should beinstalled in about 3 hours.Aside from the safety issue, itreally does take a lot of theflex out of the car. Anyonereally interested in doing it,drop me a line.

While on the safety issue, asof JUNE, anyone entering a RTHhigh speed track event must havea fire extinguisher! It is nolonger an option and is for ourown good. The preferred modelseems to be the 2 1/2 lb Halon

version available through many ofour advertisers and must bemounted metal-to-metal, withineasy reach of the driver. Thisis important for those signed upfor 3ummit Point and The GLEN.

I now have the basic crew in

place to start on the 30thcelebration. We will meetsometime soon to get this show onthe road. I'll keep you postedand be sure to offer suggestionson what you would like to do.

step by Step... Project 944by A1 Anderson

I can hardly believe this isthe fourth season of track eventswith my 944. I have a reputationfor changing cars as frequently asmost people change underwear. Igave up a 911 for the 944, andeveryone thought I was crazy, but Istill like the 944. Each year,Step by Step, I improved the car tothe point where it is now strictlya track car, tailored to my needsand desires. The suspension I amcurrently building would not bepractical for the street but I hadto make a choice; a good track caror a so-so track and street car.

If you followed my articles onthe project, you have to be sayingwhen is he going to do the motor!Not just yet. I had to decidebetween a turbo conversion or

normally aspirated motor and cameto the conclusion that if I wentturbo it would have to be the best,a Galloway with 280 hp. I decidedI like being the underdog and Idon't like the $8,000+ price tag ofa proper Galloway. I'll use theAutothority Stage 2 kit when it isready (next month, according tothem) which will give me about 200hp at a cost of about $2,500. Withthe way my car handles, 200 hp willdo just fine. I have been talking

with A1 Collins at Autothorityregarding the development of twokits they offer. Stage 1 is almostready to market. It offers around175 hp (about the same as theEuropean 944). My car is almost atthat point now so the Stage 2 kitis the way for me. Stage 2 changesthe cam, exhaust (Bursch headers,which I have), fuel injectioncomputer, and some work on thehead. In order to handle thisincrease in power properly, Iprepared the car to stop better andbecome more responsive in thecorners.

First, we start with thebrakes. I have had a lot of

problems with brake overheating duein part to the restriction of airflow caused by ray lowering the rideheight. I installed the brakeducts offered by Holbert Racingwhich consist of two fiberglasspieces connected with duct hose.The front piece pop rivets to thelower duct in the air dam with a

little cutting, and the rear piecebolts directly to the inner hub soit moves with the wheel.

Everything is of a very highquality and they work! With theaddition of a flat washer-like ringto keep air from flowing outthrough the rotor vents, they willreduce the temp about 150 deg (andif this isn't enough, I'm mounting

air conditioners in the front

fender wells. I am also using newrotors with 928 style grooves todissipate gas build-up on thesurface and 924 Carrera braidedsteel front brake lines. The frontbrake pads are Ferodo M compoundwith stock rear pads. I am prettyhappy with the setup but I wouldlike a bit more bias to the rear.

Now the suspension. Last year Iadded the Weltmeister 'railroadtie' sway bars with solid bushingsand 210 lb front springs. Onceadjusted properly, they workedfine. This year I replaced thefront springs with Weltmeister 260lb units and added 26 mm reartorsion bars. The lower control

arm rubber bushings are history.Solid bushings are being custommade and the lower control arms are

being welded around the outer edgefor less flexing and addedstrength. I added a camber trussto stiffen the strut towers which

complements the stiffness my rollbar gave me in the rear, again lessflex. To add to the down-force on

the rear wheels in high speedturns, I installed a light weightfiberglass rear 924 Carrera wingwhich is larger than the stock 944wing by quite a bit. All thesechanges should give me a morepositive feel on the track.

In the motor department I didmake some changes. For more enginecooling, I installed the 924

Carrera hood scoop and sealed thegaps where the radiator mounts tothe bulkhead with heat resistantfoam. Now the air goes through theradiator, not around it! For moreengine breathing, I replaced theold bottomed-out Euro Car headers

with the longer Bursch headers.The Bursch clear the right sidemotor mounts by a good six incheswhere the stock manifold and the

Euro Car headers were close to the

rubber motor mounts, adding to thechronic burned-out motor mount

problem.One of the biggest improvements

you can make on your 944 if you areserious about track events is the

gear change. Autothority has acomplete new set of gears for the944 for about $1,500. If you don'twant the complete set, you shouldat least change 5th. It isworthless on the longer trackswhere you would use 5th gearbecause it is an overdrive and will

not accelerate.

As always, when setting up acar, make your changes for areason. Step by Step. Don't makechanges just for change sake.Think it out and decide what

you're using the car for and whatyou want out of it. I look at mycar as a long range project,enjoying each improvement but Iwould not do many of the changes ifI was using it for a daily car andhad to transport others. Muchthanks to Holbert Racing's BobRusso and Brian Smith for their

ENTERING THE (X)RNER, part 2by Larry Herman

"Ok, so you told me how toapex, and how to brake, and how toget back on the power. You evenexplained how to t\im into thecomer, but you never told mewhen!". I have probably just setmyself up for the toughest part ofmy series. If ever anyone(everyone?) was going to disagreewith what I have to say, it willprobably be after this article. Iheexeict moment and place on the trackwhen you tum-in to a corner is themost subjective of all other phasesof driving. It is this point, andthe speed that you carry, and thehandling of you car, and yourability, and the layout of the turnthat will determine how you willdrive the comer. What I would like

to do is to explain the factors,one at a time, that influence thetum-in point, and it will be up toyou to pick and choose which onesapply.

The first and probably mostinfluential factor that will affect

your tum-in point is the type andradius of the turn. An increasing

radius comer opens up (gets wider)as you go through it. This allowsyou to take a relatively earlyline; that is, you will be able totum-in to the apex before the roadstarts to tum. You will be able to

take a gradual entry arc, Eindstretch out the turn. The apexpoint that you use will probably bearound the mid-point of the tum.After the apex, as your car driftsout to the edge of the track, thetrack moves out also, giving youmore road to drive on. In other

words, there is rocan to continueturning after the apex. Also, byit*s nature, this type of tumallows you to carry alot of speedinto the comer and allows you toget on the power very early.Conversely, a decreasing radius

tum tightens up as you go throughit. This tum requires you to doalmost all of your tuming in thebegining of the comer, before youreach the apex. Therefore, yourtum-in point will have to be verylate, and deep into the comer;well after the road starts to tum.

Your arc will be very tight, andthe apex point will be quite late,almost at the exit of the corner.Remember that the road tightens up,and the car will have to be pointedout of the tum before alot of

power can be applied. This type oftum is usually very tricky, andquite slow. If you don*t quite getthis, don't worry - I'll havepictures next month.

Another factor in determiningthe tum-in point is the ability ofthe car to accelerate and comer.

These two abilities are

diametrically opposed, and theywill influence the "balance" of the

car. The more power a car has, thelater the apex, and consequentlythe later the tum-in point. It'squite simple. A higher horsepowercar needs to take a straighten linecoming out of the comer becai^e(remember the vector forces) it'svelocity increases faster, and soit's arc must correspondinglystraighten out faster. A lowerhorsepower car does not accelerateas quickly, so it's cornering powerwill not fall off as rapidly. Thisallows it to tum-in earlier, carrymore initial speed, apex earlier,and do more tuming as it comes outof the corner. If a car does not

handle well, if it does not havealot of grip, then it must take alater apex. It will not have thetraction to continue tuming andaccelerating as it comes out of thecomer. Conversely, a betterhandling car can take an earlierapex. At the extreme, a fairhandling high horsepower car (911?)must take a rather late apex whilea very good handling low horsepower

car (914) can take a relativelyearly apex. The relationship ofhorsepower to handling (the balsinceas I refer to it) determines therelative tum-in and apex points. Ihsid an interesting experienceriding in Don Galbraith's old *74911 Carrera. I noted that with

racing tires, he was able toturn-in and apex at about the sameplaces as I was in my 914, exceptthat he was going about 2 or 3 mphfaster through the comers. Withthe increased grip of the racetires, his car had about the same

balance as my car.

A final factor mitigating the

turn-in point is style of thedriver. A driver who is smooth and

can turn-in to a comer without

jerking the steering wheel canturn-in later but still use the

ssune apex point than a driver vhotends to abruptly turn the wheel.Also the drivers who tend to pitchthe car into the corner have to

turn-in earlier because the front

tires need more time to respond tothe harsh treatment. In my lastarticle I talked about using thebraking effect (loading of thefront tires) to help tum-in, andthe throttle effect to stablize the

car. Using these techniquesproperly will help the car tohandle better, and delay theturn-in point. Remember thatdelaying the tum-in point (withoutaffecting the apex point) willallow you brake later, thereforekeeping the car at top speed for afraction longer. This is part ofwhat helps to trim off those lastelusive tenths of seconds, and whatseparates the competant driver fromthe superior one. Next month -pictures of increasing anddecreasing radius turns.
