In view o! the fact that oo c:uch hae been dono toward the Dedic ation cereeony on l:ay lst it hae been eut;geeted that we proceed vti th the Dedi en tion on that day . It haa a lso been augGoe ted that we 1ti,;ht incorporate in tho Ded i cation Exe r ciee a the l ayi ng of the corner etone . The ce rec:ony could be very b rie f ; you r car could be driven to a point witt.in a foot of the comer- etone , and it would be our hope a nd wieh, o! couree , that you p lace the e tone .
Very !rankly , tttie ie the t hing tllat ,.,~ would c:oet like to have done; but"' do want to follow your own wishes and ideas in the a;a tte r . i/e are eo delit, hted over the !act that we a re getti ng thie fine building with ita historic ae tting and back- ground , a nd "'<! a re eo grateful and appreci&. tive of your f ine !.n t e re e t t hrough al l t he ne gotiat1one !rou. the very start and of the f ine ..e.y ot ehowing your i n te ree t by coa;ing here to the ded 1ca t1on , that ..e want to do what you t hink and teel would be c:oat appropriate under the c i rewa tan ce a ,

7/e are a bit disturbed ov.r the arransementa !or the Dedicat ion Axercleee at the new Rhinebeck poet office on l'ay 1st 1939. The President expec t s to a rrive about 3&30 PJ.I and will have with him t he Crown Prince and Crown Princeoe o! Deru:ark. He haa indicated that be will give a abort addreea of about !Hteen or twenty or.inutee . Tbe exercieee are known aa "The Dedication Exercieee . •
It hne no w occurred to ue , in view of the President ' s le t ter to or.e o! April 11th ., that we might i11clude in the Dedication Sxerci eea the laying o! the corner atone which beare the nwr.e of the President and o! other government o!ficiale 'Rho have been inotrun:ental in the erection o! the building . It that I e done , tho President should zeally leave his car for thtlt purpose , although he hae expressed h i e wieh that he epeak !rom the autocobile . The car could be driven up to a position •dthin a toot o:- two of the corner- stone , and the ceremony could be very abort .
l nm sure that nothing would please our local people better than to have the Presi dent leave the car juet !or a n:ocent and officiate at the corner- atone laying. "'a c;atter o! ! ac t , there ie aleo a Legend-etone which could be placed at a later date, and probably upon the occu.eion o! the openins of the building !or occupation . However , i! the l!resident would pre!e r to r~turn at a late r date to lay the corner- atone ~<hen the building 1e tully cocple ted except tor the murnle (which I underetand will not be !iniehed before Fall) we would be very glad to arxe.nge for the corner-atone laying at aoor.e time
to au it tile President"a convenience .
1 e1t answering the Preeident ' s letter and eiztply suggeeting that o! course we want to do whnt he thinks rrould be moet appropriate ano what he wo uld moe t l1 ke to do .

Dear Mr. President,
October 31 1944.
When ~ friend Professor Niels Bohr saw
you some weeks ago , I understand you mentioned to him that
you misht want to see him again.
Professor Bohr is staying with us once more

would, however, await your orders here in town if you should
have time tor a fUrther talk and should want t o see him.
He would t herefore be most grateful for a
word f r om t he Whi te House as t o whether he may expec t to be
Bllowed to come to see you once more, or whether your time
is too much taken up with other thinss to permit another
interview. In the latter case he feels he ought to leave very
soon.
Allow me to thank you f or your most kind
words asking me to come to see you upon ~ r eturn f rom England.
I had an i nteresting time in London meet ing several of the
leaders of our resistance movement in Denoark recently escaped.
