Classroom Culture – Us and Them Kids, like everyone else take pleasure in belonging to things. One of the key functions of cultures – those in the classroom and more broadly is to make members feel they belong to an important ‘us’.

o Celebrations – Asking pupils at the end of the lesson, ‘who do you think has done great work today?’ Getting everyone to give clap/cheer that student.

o Creating displays that are specific for that particular class. E.g. 7Bs best work wall.

o Having a class goal (e.g. everyone achieves a B grade) and referring to this regularly. Updating the whole class on progress towards this.

o Having class pledges/ class agreements about behaviour, rewards etc…

o Assigning responsibilities to specific students

Getting to know students o Making mini index cards at the start of the year for

each student

o Making personalised comments when marking

o Nicknames, jokes, greeting at the door
