PAEMST Awards Program for Application Cycle The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the Highest Recognition that a kindergarten through 12 th grade teacher may receive for outstanding mathematics or science (including computer science) instruction in the United States. The National Science Foundation (NSF) administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) About the National Science Foundation About PAEMST Established by Congress in 1983, the program authorizes the President to bestow up to 108 awards per year. *An award may be given to two mathematics or science teachers from each of the 50 states; Washington D.C.; the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; Department of Defense Education Activity schools; and the U.S. Territories as a group (U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands). A certificate signed by the President of the United States A $10,000 award from NSF to be used at the awardees discretion A trip for two to Washington, D.C. for recognition events These events could include an award ceremony, celebratory events, professional development activities, and discussions with policy-makers on how to improve mathematics and science education. Awardees receive: 2013 Presidential Awardees Awardees at NSF Headquarters PAEMST Recognition Event Conferring of certificates at the Awards Ceremony PAEMST Recognition Event Awardees enjoying professional development activities PAEMST Recognition Event Teachers at the National Science Foundation enjoying professional development activities Award also: Provides teachers with an opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation. More than 4,400 awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of STEM education. Go to the PAEMST.org and click on Nominate a Teacher ClickHere Nomination Page View On the Nomination Page, please provide: the Teachersaddress name school name, address and telephone number your contact information how you know the teacher how you heard about PAEMST BeginHere Applicants must: Teach mathematics or science (including computer science) as part of their contracted teaching responsibilities at the K-6 th grade level in a public (including charter) or private school. Hold at least a Bachelors degree from an accredited institution. Be full-time employees of the school or school district as determined by state and district policies, with responsibilities for teaching students no less than 50 percent of the schools allotted instructional time. Have at least five years of full-time employment as a K-12 teacher during which mathematics or science (including computer science) has been a part of the applicants teaching duties prior to the academic school year. Who can apply for ? Applicants must: Teach in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth or Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, or the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands). Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Not have received the PAEMST award at the national level in any prior competition or category. Who can apply for ? How do I apply? Go to the PAEMST.org and click on Begin or Resume an Application ClickHere The Teacher Portal My Application After the applicant enters My Application and completes the eligibility form, he or she can begin the PAEMST application. There are three components to the online PAEMST application: Administrative Component Narrative Component Video Component Application Components The Administrative Component consists of: Teacher Information Form Employment Verification Form Letters of Recommendation (three) Rsum (not to exceed two pages) Demographic Information Form (optional) Administrative Component The narrative component consist of a written response that addresses the Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching and supplemental materials. The applicant will choose a mathematical or scientific concept. The concept will be used in the written response and when choosing a classroom lesson to video. The application may include supplemental material such as lesson plans, samples of student work, assessment items or publications. Narrative Component 1.Mastery of mathematics or science content appropriate to grade level taught 2.Use of instructional methods and strategies that are appropriate for the students in the classroom and that support student learning 3.Effective use of student assessments to evaluate, monitor, and improve student learning 4.Reflective practice and life-long learning to improve teaching and student learning 5.Leadership in education outside the classroom Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching The Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching Template is provided for you to complete offline and paste into the boxes in the written response portion of your application. The total allowable character count for all responses is 25,000 characters. The total character count will keep your responses to around 12 pages of double spaced, 12-point font with 1 inch margins. You may divide your responses however you wish between the five dimensions and multiple prompts. Guidelines for the Narrative Component Written Response Portal View Supplemental materials: must be submitted as one single file not exceeding 10 pages must be labeled with applicant name, Teacher ID, and display page numbers; must not be a continuation of the administrative or narrative component; should be referenced within the written response; Guidelines for the Narrative Component Supplemental materials: should include a list of citations if any research articles or materials are discussed in the written response; may be submitted in the following formats: Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc or.docx), Rich Text Files (.rtf), or Image Files (.gif,.jpeg,.jpg,.png); Please note: Documents larger than 100 MB cannot be uploaded. Guidelines for the Narrative Component The video will be used when evaluating the applicants performance on the Five Dimensions of Outstanding Teaching. The video should convey the applicants: depth of content knowledge ability to employ appropriate instructional methods ability to engage all students and assess student learning Video Component In order to provide in-depth evidence of the applicants knowledge and abilities, the video must: correspond to the important concept chosen and discussed in Dimension One; be of a single class, lesson or experience during the school year; not be more than 45 minutes or one class period, whichever is shorter; be continuous footage, unedited and devoid of any stopping and restarting of the camera*; Guidelines for the Video Component *If there is a break in your video files of less than one second, please combine the files and submit the single file. If the break is longer, you will need to either retake the video or only submit one of the video files. Come from a single camera and not contain multiple screens upon viewing; adhere to all district or school requirements and guidelines for parental release or student permission related to classroom video recording; be of sufficient quality so that the applicants face and the students faces are visible and voices are audible; and Be labeled and uploaded with the file name PAEMST AY1516 along with applicant name and Teacher ID.
