National Space Club – Huntsville

• What we are– Since 1985 a non-profit organization dedicating to promoting United

States space leadership through conferences, workshops, and other media and educational means without attempting to influence legislation

• Who we are– Members come from government, industry, educational institutions, the

press and other walks of life

• What we do– Stimulate civilian and military applications of human and robotic space

technology for the benefit of all mankind– Educate the technical and non-technical population to the benefits of

space exploration– Honor and recognize individuals and organizations that contribute to the

advancement of aerospace and rocketry

Von Braun Memorial Dinner

• Sponsor the annual Dr. Wernher von Braun Memorial Dinner (vBMD) to honor unique contributions to Spaceflight, Aerospace Engineering, Community Service, Media Relations, and Education

• Feature a keynote speaker from industry, governmentor Department of Defense

• Provide complimentary tickets to government leaders and aerospace teachers

Von Braun Memorial Dinner (cont.)

• 600-800 attendees at Davidson Center from civil and military space communities

• Present Community Service Award, Media Award, Astronautics Engineer Award, and Dr. Wernher von Braun Space Flight Trophy

• Partner with AAS to sponsor the von Braun Symposium, just before VBMD, with attendance by major policy makers, industry leaders and NASA MSFC leadership

Educational Activities

• Annual educational budget of $25,000

• Fund annual NSC scholarships to UAHuntsville, Alabama A&M, Calhoun Community College, and Athens State University to promote aerospace education (2010 total was $13,000)

• Award special grants to Huntsville City and Madison County schools (K-12 space project funding) and NSC “Aerospace Educator Award” that support space-related education

• Partner with AMSTEC, Sci-Quest, NASA MSFC, Huntsville Chamber of Commerce and USS&RC to provide financial aid for educational activities

• National Space Club and ASMDA sponsored the Outreach Program to reach Title-One schools in Winston and Walker Counties, Alabama

• The Road Show took place May 12-14, 2010 and May 20 & 21, 2010

• Over 1,140 students participated over the 6 days

• “Future of Spaceflight” themed workshops and demonstrations targeted all students in Grades 3-6

Member Programs and Activities

• Sponsor the annual Leadership Lunch where leaders of Huntsville’s civilian (NASA) and military (Redstone Arsenal) space/missile agencies brief industry and community on the “state of the union”

• Support and co-sponsor space related conferences of national and international significance (e.g., AIAA, International Space Camp, robotics competitions, etc.)

• Conduct NSC member meetings and receptions in recognition of key space events (e.g., meet the new NASA Administrator)

• Heighten community awareness of space activities by sponsoring NSC activities (ex. blue screen space pictures) at Panoply Arts event

Our Plans for the Future

• Increase participation from those DoD agencies in Huntsville and RSA who are involved in military space

• Market and brand National Space Club, so that people are aware of the educational focus, in order to increase participation
