SENIOR CLASS TRIP TO GATLINBURG2017

Our trip to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge was the experi-ence of a lifetime. From seeing the jaw-dropping Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, the awe-inspiring exhibits at WonderWorks Amusement Park, and stepping back in time to April 14, 1912, to experience the sinking of the Titanic (not to mention The Tomb Escape Game, Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, and ziplining over the Great Smoky Mountains). Every-one should experience the wonder of The Great Smoky Mountains! Thank you to all who made this amazing trip possible!

2017 OHIO MUSIC AMBASSADORS TRIP TO EUROPE

The vocal music department would like to express its immense gratitude for the community support demonstrated toward Trinity Morelock and the Morelock family in their efforts to raise the fees for the 2017 Ohio Music Ambassadors trip throughout Europe, sponsored by BGSU and many other organizations. The trip affords students the chance to tour throughout Europe with other choral singers to perform at well-known locations, attend shows, participate in master classes with professors and directors throughout Europe. As a student interested in a music major, the nomination for the trip gives Trinity an unusual learning experience. Thanks to you, the Morelock family is now fully able to send Trinity on this amazing and extraordinary opportunity. Again, thank YOU all for being kind, supportive, and as always, Lakota strong.

LAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL AFTER-PROMFor the second year in a row, Lakota High School SADD sponsored a successful After-

Prom gathering at the Risingsun Church of God. Thank you Pastor Paul – what a fun event! Students who attended received gift cards, prizes, pizza and home-made brownies. Students played games, ate and gathered with friends, discussing and sharing prom memories. Lakota High School SADD and Firelands Counseling & Recovery Services sponsored this event.

“WE ARE THE MAJORITY” RALLYOn Thursday, April 20, SADD and Student Council sent 18 students to the “We Are The MAJORITY” Rally at Genoa Park in Columbus,

Ohio. The Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network sponsored this rally. 1800 students from across the State of Ohio attended. One of the most common misconceptions in our society today is that a majority of young people are making detrimental decisions that affect the rest of their lives. However, research has continuously shown that a vast majority of youth are making positive, healthy choices. The day consisted of opportunities for learning about the importance of living those positive choices. Students got to march to the Ohio Statehouse to let their voices on this important issue be heard. It was a great day! If any student, between the ages of 15 and 18, are interested in joining the Ohio Youth-Led Prevention Network (OYLPN), they are seeking applicants for the 2017-2018 Youth Council. Applicants must have the ability to travel throughout the state on a monthly or as-needed basis. Selected applicants must be able to attend monthly meetings, which are the first Saturday of every month. The OYLPN retreat on August 11-12, 2017, and April meeting will be mandatory.

NINE-TO-FIVE BREAKFASTOn Friday, May 5th, three Lakota High School students were recognized at the Nine-

to-Five Breakfast. Sponsored by the North Point Educational Service Center and the Ottawa County Cabinet of Superintendents, the event was held at Mon Ami Restaurant in Port Clinton, Ohio. Attendees enjoyed a wonderful buffet breakfast and awards program.

The Nine-to-Five Breakfast was established to recognize students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who have demonstrated marked improvement in their academics, attitude, attendance or general school performance from the ninth month (September) through the fifth month (May). In addition to Lakota students, individuals from Danbury High School, Genoa Area High School, Oak Harbor High School, Port Clinton High School, Put-in-Bay High School, and Woodmore High School were honored.

Each of the honorees also selected a “significant person” whom they felt supported them in their efforts to be successful. These individuals were also recognized by the students with heartfelt speeches and the presentation of certificates.

Lakota's sophomore award winner was Lacey Burlew. She chose her mother, Christine Meagher, as her biggest source of support and encouragement.

The junior award recipient was Hope Watson-Davis. She recognized her grandmother, Gayla Watson, as her significant person who has had a valuable role in Hope’s life.

Paul Mowry served as our senior honoree. Paul chose his mother, Jackie Mowry, as the person who helped him adjust his attitude and improve his work habits.

HELP US PROTECT OUR KIDS

ON THE PLAYGROUND

One thing we always have out here at Lakota is wind. Our playground on the west side of the building often feels like a wind tunnel. One of our projects this fall was the planting of a windbreak for the playground. If you would like to designate a tree in honor or memory of someone, as an alumni class project, or anonymously, please contact the Board Office at 419-986-6650. The cost is $200 for each tree. We will have a plaque posted on the side of the building with the names of all donors. Thank you for your support!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

As we begin to put the finishing touches on the 2016-17 school year, I want to thank the parents, guardians, staff, and students of LMS for making my first year as principal a memorable one. As we enter the last month of school, it is important to keep our students’ focused on finishing on a positive note. Additionally, there is an increase in student discipline concerns as we enter May. A few items to note are cell phones which are to be secure in the students’ lockers from 8:00-2:45. If a staff member catches a student with a phone during this time it is sent to the main office. If it is a student’s first violation they can collect the phone at the end of the day. A second violation will require a parent/guardian to sign for the phone with additional violations resulting in Thursday Schools up to in-school suspensions. If you need to reach your student during the day please contact the school and we will deliver messages to them.

There are several events to recognize the students for their hard work in the class-room. These events are listed on the school calendar which can be viewed by visiting the school web address www.lakotaschools.org. If your schedule allows, please plan on attending as many events as possible as your support is vital to the success of our stu-dents. Again, thank you for a successful first year and have a safe and relaxing summer.

8TH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS POETRYSubmitted by Mrs. Pam Clark

Students in my 8th grade Language Arts classes recently participated in a mini poetry slam. They wrote their own Spoken-Word Poetry, poetry that is meant to be performed by its creator.  Many students chose to explore topics that were very personal and meaningful to them.  Tears of empathy, sympathy, indignation, and solidarity were shared as they spoke of their fears, hopes, frustrations, confusion, and hatred on subjects ranging from baseball to LeBron James to romantic heartache to divorce to suicide. I was extremely proud to be able to witness the courage they displayed as they willingly stood in front of their peers and bared their souls.  Even more, they displayed such respect for each other and offered comfort without reservation.  Knowing that these people are the future of our world brings a smile to my heart.  We’ll be in good hands.

ASSET TEAM

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FROM THE DESK OF MRS. DANA WARD

Principal At Lakota ElementaryDear Families,

It’s beginning to look and feel like Spring outside which means we begin the process of wrapping up another successful school year! Our school is buzzing with exciting events; field trips, field day, award celebrations, Preschool and Kindergarten graduations, and extra recess. As we enter the “home stretch”, we ask that parents encourage their students to keep school a priority and to continue to make good behavior choices. Also, just a reminder to get school fees, library fees, and lunch accounts paid and up to date before the end of the year.

FIRST GRADE NEWSThe first grade students have been working

hard on increasing their reading levels. As students are able to read benchmark books with 95% accuracy, they may advance to the next level. Each book level increases with more vocabulary, punctuation, and extended text. On April 11th, the first graders put on a wonderful performance of A Day in the Country. Great job to all of the kids and Mrs. Sandrock on a job well done! On May 17th, the first graders took a Field Trip to the Toledo Zoo. This was a great experience and everyone had fun. We are currently finishing up our reading and math series and counting down the days left of school using ABC days. Each day has a special activ-ity that begins with the letter of the alphabet. Please don’t forget to read with your child this summer and practice those math facts. Have a great summer!

LAKOTA L.E.A.D.S.The Middle School recognizes students at

midterm and end of quarter throughout the year. A student that exemplifies each qual-ity are chosen for each grade. The qualities are leadership, effort, academics, discipline and spirit. Congratulation to the end of 3rd quarter winners!

BEGINDERGARTEN AND KINDERGARTEN NEWSThe Kindergarteners and Begindergarteners have had a great year! We have had many exciting activi-

ties including Dr. Seuss Day in March, an Easter Egg Hunt in the middle of April and our field trip to Plaza Lanes and Conner Park at the end of April. We are currently doing our ABC count down to the end of the year. Each day we have a fun activity or task that correlates to the letters of the alphabet. The Begindergarteners hatched eggs in their classroom and learned all about the life cycle of chickens. On May 5th, we will be having a Luau to celebrate all of the flowers we earned for our leis. On May 31st, we will be having our Field Day. At the end of the year, the Kindergarteners who are moving on to 1st grade will be having their graduation on June 2nd. We want to send a big thank you to PTO, all the parents and the staff at Lakota for helping to make this a wonderful year!

We are finishing our state assessments. Our teachers worked very hard throughout the school year challenging our students so they would be prepared for the state assessments. The students worked hard, took their time, and stayed focused during the assessments and there is no doubt in my mind that each one of them did an amazing job! Assessment results should arrive in June and we will get those results to you as soon as possible. Diagnostic results will be sent home in the end of the year grade cards.

We have two programs that we will run throughout the summer; our Summer School and our Raider Reading Club. Summer School will be June 12-15, June 19-22, and July 10-13.

This program works on Reading and Math skills in a small group atmosphere. The Raider Reading Club is offered in paper book form and online. This would be a great program to keep reading alive this summer and there will be an ice cream sundae party at the end of the summer to celebrate!

Our new Begindergarten program was a HUGE success this year! As a result of our kin-dergarten screenings and observations in our kindergarten classrooms, we discovered that some of our students had not reached certain developmental stages in their young lives and they were having a difficult time handling the requirements for kindergarten. Begindergarten

is a two year program concentrating on some pre-readiness skills as well as social skills. This allows children to mature and grow with their friends but does not put them into a stressful learning situation. Next year they will go on to kindergarten and we are positive these students will have a successful year as readers and leaders!

In closing, thank you once again for a fabulous year at Lakota! Enjoy your sum-mer with your children and cherish every moment with them! Don’t forget to spend some time reading and doing some fun learning activities also!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

2nd Grade field trip to

Terra (Earth Jam)

SECOND GRADE HAPPENINGS!The second grade classes traveled to Terra State Community College on April 26th to

participate in Earth Jam. This event was hosted by the Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca County Joint Solid Waste Management District. The purpose of the event is to educate our stu-dents more on the importance of practicing the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. While at the Earth Jam, students were introduced to Myrtle the Recycling Turtle and her environmental friends.

Our second graders will also experience a trip to Sylvania to the Fossil Park. Mrs. Blachuta’s and Mrs. Cline’s classes went on May 16th while Mrs. Baksa’s and Mrs. Gonya’s classes will go on May 23rd. This particular field trip accompanies one of our reading texts, “The Dog that Dug for Dinosaurs”. Students get to dig for fossils just as the main characters, Tray and Mary, do in the text.

All of our students are working very hard to finish the year strong! Our students are now reading the lesson texts independently as well as reading the directions, questions and answer choices on their reading tests. They have grown a lot since August!

Other upcoming events: We will be having our last AR Party on Friday, May 26th. Field Day is on May 31st.

THIRD GRADE NEWSThird grade students celebrated learning their multiplication facts with an ice cream sundae

party.  They earned toppings for each set of facts that they passed.  Please continue to study these facts and the inverse operation of division.  We are now studying geometry and reviewing telling time.  To coincide with our state standards, we are studying life sciences.  Students are learning about various behavioral and physical adaptations.  We will culminate by traveling to the African Wildlife Safari Park where we will be able to see some of these adaptations in person.  In honor of Earth Day, third graders got a visit from the Sandusky County Solid Waste District.  They were taught the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. A hands on activity encouraged the students to identify types of recyclable items.  For Easter, students were put into teams and had an egg hunt.  In each egg was a question that covered a state standard.  The students learned that teamwork is important and enjoyed the afternoon.

FOURTH GRADE UPDATE4th grade teachers and students have been working hard to prepare for and take the AIR

state assessments. We are happy to have these tests behind us and will anxiously await the arrival of scores sometime this summer/early fall. Lakota Elementary students are currently working to complete the “Right to Read Week” Reading Challenge. Students are encouraged to read to earn rewards from now until mid-May. Elementary students are working to reach 30,000-90,000 minutes of reading. Please encourage your child to help us reach these goals. 4th graders met with Mr. McMaster on May 2. He works at the Wood County Historical Museum in Bowling Green. He presented information to students about Ohio inventors and inventions. This presentation helped to prepare students for the social studies AIR test given on May 3. All 4th graders will venture on a field trip to Fort Meigs on Thursday, May 25. They will be led on a guided tour and information about the War of 1812 will be shared. Students who are interested in joining band or choir next year will be screened during the month of May. Teachers and students will be wrapping up the year by completing content standards that will help to prepare them for 5th grade. We are hoping to schedule a ‘MOVE UP’ day so that students can walk the middle school wing and meet the teachers.

Happy Birthday...
