Challenging all students to meet their full potential
BOYER VALLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOLSDISTRICT NEWSLETTER
Upcoming School Board Meetings:
January 18February 15 Every 3rd Monday
of the month at 6 p.m.
It is sure hard to believe that the year is halfway over with already. This year started off with many challenges and I am sure we will have more challenges as we start the second half of the 2020-2021 school year. We are in the process of continuing to improve the experience for all students by advancing our curricu-lum and giving our students the best possible real-life experience possible. We have added a semester course of STEAM this year at the middle school level. We are also working with the Woodbine CSD on real life hands- on experience courses for college credit at the new Stem Center.
We have partnered with KDSN and FMCTC to broadcast home events and we are also looking for different ways to expand our Agricultural Program. The three CTE Instructors have secured a grant for almost $10,000 dollars as we incorporate the three cur-riculums together.
We have also added early outs for second semester as the staff will continue to work on their curriculum and how to best challenge their students. Please take a close look at the updated School Calendar that is in this newsletter.
Boyer Valley’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)
The Iowa Department of Education updated the COVID-19 Iowa Area Eligibility plan. The updated Iowa plan, allows school food authorities and sites who participated in the National School Lunch Program in SY 2019-2020 and experienced economic impacts of COVID-19 may elect to participate in the Summer Food Service Program for the 20-21 school year. This plan, which Boyer Valley CSD participates in, enables all children toreceive free breakfast and lunches through May, regardless of your income status. This does not include second meals or milks, al-a-carte items or milk only purchases.
If you have any questions please, give Lori Malone a call at 712-643-2251.

Elementary ConferencesI’d like to thank all of our parents that participated in our fall par-
ent-teacher conferences. It was certainly unusual to conduct the conferences via telephone and Zoom, but we very much appreci-ate everyone’s efforts in making sure quality communication was still able to take place this year. Good communication between the home and school helps to ensure great academic progress for your child. Keep up the good work, parents. We look forward to communicating with you throughout the whole school year.
Communication with SchoolE-mail has been a popular and convenient way for parents to
communicate with school staff and vice versa. This is just a re-minder, though, that if you are sending an e-mail to Hollie or your child’s teacher, and the information is time sensitive (ex. where to go after school) be sure to call the school to verify that the mes-sage was received if you do not get a return e-mail confirming the receipt of the message. There are times when our computers/in-ternet might be out-of-order, there may be a substitute teacher in your child’s classroom, or your child’s teacher may not have time to check his/her e-mail prior to dismissal. Please continue to use e-mail to communicate with us, but if it is time sensitive and you haven’t received a confirmation from that staff member, it would be best to call and make sure the message was received.
Remote Learning ExpectationsWhen it is necessary for your child to go into remote learning,
there are some guidelines we expect them to follow. It is best for them if they can be properly dressed for school and to have a designated area for studying. This gets them in the right frame of mind for studying. Their video will be displayed on the classroom Smartboard (in order to participate) for the whole class to see so it is necessary that the remote learners not take part in activities that are distracting to the children in the classroom. For example, students shouldn’t be eating, consuming candy, playing with pets, playing with toys, etc. We appreciate your cooperation with this!
Winter ClothingPlease be sure to send your child to school in proper clothing
during the winter months. Unless is gets unbearably cold outside, students will go outside for recess in order to get fresh air. I’ve suggested to the students that they get all of their winter clothing gathered the night before school so they aren’t scrambling to find items in the morning before school. It would be a great benefit to make sure that your child’s winter clothing is marked with his/her name. You’d be surprised how many coats, gloves, and boots look exactly alike in an elementary building!
Tired ChildrenThe time change, shortened daylight hours, and lower tempera-
tures usually bring about a lower energy level in our elementary students. When our students come to school tired they usually end up behaving in ways that aren’t typical. They usually don’t feel up to doing schoolwork but have extra energy to misbehave. If you notice your child acting a little sluggish at home, please con-sider altering his/her bedtime hours. Sometimes kids just need a little more time to sleep during this time of year.
HomeworkHomework can be a constant battle…especially for older
students. The elementary staff is asking for help from parents to stress the importance of completing homework. Homework completion not only shows teachers your child’s true abilities, but it also instills the life-long skill of meeting a deadline. Please check with your child on a nightly basis in order to keep aware of his/her homework situation. If you have any questions about incomplete work, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at school (674-3248).

Office Hours: 8:00am-3:45pm M-F Phone: 712-643-2258 Ext. 223Elementary Winter Concert
The elementary winter music concert will be a different format this year. Our students have been practicing their holiday songs with Mrs. Adams and Mr. Schauer. We will record the video performance of the holiday songs and provide those links to family members. This is certainly not our preferred mode of perfor-mance, but we will try to make the most of our current situation. You should have received a note from the music teachers regard-ing these new plans.
Winter BreakOur last day of the first semester will be Wednesday, December
23. School will be dismissed at 1:30 PM on that day. School will be closed for students for winter break until Tuesday, January 5, 2021. Teachers will have an in-service day on Monday, January 4.
2021-2022 PreschoolWe are taking applications for our 2021-2022 preschool. All
preschool classes are held at Dow City. We currently have pro-grams for 3- and 4-year-old students. There is a fee for 3-year-olds (currently $75/mo.) but 4-year-olds are free (due to state funding) except for some milk/snack fees. Your child must turn (at least) age 3 by September 15, 2020, in order to be considered for preschool during the 2021-2022 school year. Due to limited space in the preschool classroom, applications will be accepted based on student needs followed by the order in which we receive the applications.
Five-year-old students can also register for preschool, but there is a monthly fee. The current monthly cost is $150. The fees for the 2021-2022 school year has not been set at this time. If you are interested in getting a preschool application, please stop by or call the elementary office (674-3248).
HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCEDuring first semester students learned the
importance of their (GPA) Grade Point Aver-age, they updated their Activities Resumes and set goals for themselves for second semester. We also discussed education and training beyond high school and how they can prepare
academically to help ensure they meet graduation requirements. Students are required to have 54 credits to graduate from Boyer Valley. Juniors and seniors received a “Course to College” (pro-vided by Iowa College Aid) catalog and a “Life After High School” booklet, both contain resources for Iowa high school students and families. Another resource available to students is the booklet “Earn While you Learn” (Explore Careers in Building in Trades). This book includes information about Apprenticeship Programs and Careers that require education and training, but not a 4-year degree. It has information & contacts for Apprenticeship Pro-grams. (can be found online @ ICANsucceed.org) I would encour-age students to take these resources home and share them with their parents/guardians.

JR.HIGH GUIDANCEHealthy coping skills and being kind to others are the two topics
we discussed in December. Students have a list of 99 coping skills and are encouraged to add to the list and use the list when they are feeling frustrated angry or upset. This list can be found on schoology along with a list of community resources for students and families.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Class of 2021All scholarships available to current seniors are listed on Scho-
ology. Students can access them in the Course “Class of 2022”, in the purple folder. When a new scholarship is sent to me, I e-mail that to seniors and add it to the list on Schoology. So, it’s ex-tremely important for students to check their e-mail & Schoology EVERY day! Parents and Guardians, please ask your student to show you the list of scholarships. Take time to look through them and have them apply for any/all that they are eligible for. They can also find a list of scholarship websites on their schoology course “Class of 2021”.
CAREER EXPLORATIONSecond Semester lessons will focus on career exploration.
Students will take career assessments that will help them deter-mine which career pathways they should explore, based on their strengths, interests, and skills.
ACT TEST: Students interested in taking the ACT test can reg-
ister online at actstudent.org.

Bull-Pups Fight for Nurse Jodi
The BV elementary building has good news to share. We were given
300 Nurse Jodi Strong silicone bracelets. They were sold as a free will donation and all proceeds will be given to Nurse Jodi Klein and family. We would like to thank everyone who purchased these bracelets. If you are interested in having one, we do have some left in the Elementary building. Also, during the week of December 14-18th the staff paid money for the privilege of wearing
jeans and will also donate these funds. The Har-rison County Humane Society will be accepting cash in memory of ‘Doc Hall’, a good friend of the BV staff and also the Father of 4th grade teacher, Kent Hall. The Dunlap Food Pantry was given money in honor of Nurse Jodi Klein. A gift card was sent to the family of Parker Schuyler (son of Stacie Heller-Schuyler) and the remainder of the money will be given to the Klein family.
Boyer Valley is Nurse Jodi Strong and her fight is our fight. We love you Jodi!

The Boyer Valley chapter of the National Honmor Society held it’s induction ceremony on December 3rd. 9 new members were inducted: Faith Beeck, Adam Puck, Zack Peterson, Jaci Peter-son, Caden Nielsen, Leah Cooper, Makenzie Dumbaugh, Trevor Malone, and Maci Miller.
Andi (Thomsen) Sharp was the keynote speaker and shared a message about understanding the need to keep the right balls in the air when juglinng life’s responsibilities. All 11 of the current members each took a portion of the ceremony to help celebrate our newest members.
The NHS has had some discussion about doing a fundraiser af-ter the holiday break and some possible changes to the chapter’s constitution to better reflect current time and activities. Some of the changes could be in the timing of the selection process and selection criteria such as grade level. (Currently Boyer Valley requires possible candidates to be at the minimum in their junior year while the National organization says they could be in the sophomore year with three semesters completed.)
Mr. Hesman excited to be the advisor, is looking forward to see-ing what the members will do moving forward.
