Women and Loose…Saddle PartsBy Suzanne Murphree

A while back I was participating in a horse-manship clinic watching my friend, Wanda, take her turn at riding the rail at the canter. When all of a sud-den there was a whoop and a dodge and all mayhem broke loose. The mayhem may have been three quar-ters in Wanda’s mind but that’s a stickling detail. Her horse had spooked and dodged to the right unbalancing my friend who was left desperately seeking her right stirrup that was flapping along evading her hapless foot. Finding the renegade stirrup she readily righted herself and breathed a sign of relief. That’s when the clinician dropped the C Bomb. The clinician was not talking about being Careful (which is a good thing in and of itself). She was talk-ing about riding Centered on the horse so that when the unexpected happens, the rider is still actually riding the horse and can make corrections. Riding centered means staying on the horse (also a good thing) cen-tered enough so that if the horse dodges, so do you (an even better thing) thus keeping your balance and your stirrups intact. A centered rider can make the correc-tions to get back on the rail, the trail, the obstacle or where ever the incident happened. All of this leads to:Riding Tip #1: I can’t correct the horse if I’m not on the horse.” Riding Centered probably means I won’t lose the stirrup, lose the control and (hopefully) not lose my mind as I correct the problem. Another “woman on the loose” happened to me while I was desperately seeking my way out of a canyon in Texas. With heat, cacti and rattlesnakes galore I was in too much of a hurry to check the girth after a break. The girth was just loose enough to tilt my saddle to the side making any resemblance of “centered” an impossibility. It goes without saying that I was unhorsed. With luck and prayer I managed to clear a group of sticky cacti on my way down. My breast strap kept the saddle from slipping underneath the annoyed horse. I quickly righted myself and tight-ened the wayward saddle with no damage other than to my pride. This brings me to:Riding Tip # 2: Always check the tack after a break. Even if you didn’t loosen the girth intentionally it could still need a tune up. An endurance riding friend of mine uses a particular knot on her loosened girth

Solid Training Lasts a Lifetime!

Invest in your horse’s future now.

while she takes a break. When she returns to the horse the knot is a reminder to her that the girth has been loosened and to tighten up before mounting. While at a trail competition I noticed that the rider ahead of me had loose spurs. The more she trot-ted the more they flopped up and down. They were the strap on style and were coming dangerously close to getting entangled in whatever was around. Riding Tip # 3: If you ride with spurs be certain they are a snug fit or invest in some spur ties downs. You can do your own homegrown version with rawhide. One of the more overlooked “loose” issues is the saddle bag dilemma. Taking off down an inviting trail sometimes requires a few extra items. And so we strap on the saddle bag to accommodate the stuff. I was at another trail competition when a horse just flew past me sans rider. It was easy to see what the problem was…large, loose and wildly flapping saddle bags. The person had thrown these on the horse at the last minute without appropriate adjustment time for the horse and to make matters worse he failed to secure them property. The more the horse spooked at the oversized and foreign bags the more he ran the more the bags flapped. The horse ran out of sight. It took the ride administrators a couple of hours to locate him. And so this brings me to our last but still very impor-tant lesson learned from the oblivious and the bruised:Riding Tip #4: Select the appropriate size bag for your trail ride. More is not necessarily better unless you are picking apples or looking for buried treasure. Then secure the bag in such a way to greatly impede any loose action. Most of the bags come with strings and rings. I like to carry a few extra scissor snaps (from hardware store) to help secure the bag rings onto the saddle rings. It’s easier on and off rather than tying the bags to the saddle. Some of my favorite bags for competition and recreational riding are:*Snug Pax: Hand made by a lady in California. She makes a nice selection of cantle and pommel bags in a plethora of colors. Her bags fit the saddle and can be snugged down for a lower profile, even the ones with drink holders. *Stowaway also is a good product. So ladies (and gentlemen) get a grip on loose gear, take a few centered riding lessons and hit the trail. Enjoy your horse. Be safe.

Happy trails from Suzanne and Princess Lola
