By Maurice Rees The Parrsborough Shore Historical Society, in partner- ship with local schools, pre- sented “A Community Celebration of Indigenous Culture” on October 11th, 2017 at Ottawa By the Sea Museum. The Parrsborough Shore Historical Society was fortunate to receive financial support from the Canada 150 Fund to assist with this event. There were Mi’kmaw dancers and drummers in full regalia, story teller Gerald Gloade. A play written by Bernice Byers was performed by local stu- dents in costume and with samples of traditional foods. This event was created to celebrate and raise awareness of indigenous history and cul- ture in the area where the Mi’kmaw once had a very sig- nificant presence. Approximately 320 stu- dents from Advocate School, Parrsboro Regional Elementary & High School attended the event through- out the day. The event was held at the Ottawa House By- the-Sea Museum. The schedule was as fol- lows: 9:15 AM – 10:00 AM Beach talk with Gerald Gloade: 10:15 AM – 10:45 AM Students creating dream catcher & sampling foods; 10:50 AM – 11:10 AM Play performed by students, writ- ten by Bernice Byers and 11:15 AM – Noon Mi’kmaw drummers & dancers cultural demonstration. The afternoon was a replay of the morning activi- ties, which followed this schedule: 12:15 PM – 12:45 PM Beach talk with Gerald Gloade; 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Students creating bracelets & sampling foods; 1:35 PM – 1:55 PM Play performed by students, written by Bernice Byers and 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM Mi’kmaw drummers & dancers cultural demonstra- tion. It was the first time for many students to experience live Indigenous drumming and ceremonial costumes. Ottawa House Indigenous Event lighthouse was in better shape than they feared, although there is a lot of work to be done. With the community indicating it wanted the lighthouse saved and restored, several people signed up to be members of the society. With Parrsboro being a major tourism area, residents, business operators and visi- tors feel the lighthouse is an important tourism asset. Accompanying this article are five photos taken when four of the new directors vis- ited the lighthouse site on October 16th. One show- ing four of the new board of directors (page 1) and the other photos (below) show a view of the four sides are credited to Perry Kossatz.
